On 23rd August 1980 the BLS “Lothian & Fife Wanderer” covered a number of freight lines around Edinburgh and Fife, formed of 3 car Met Camm set 51224+59067+50243. I did not travel on this but chose to take some photos on the Granton branch, sadly only with a Kodak Instamatic.

After passing over West Harbour Road, the railtour heads uphill towards the oil terminal, over one of the few pieces of track joining the former North British and Caledonian systems in the city. On the left is the former Caledonian Railway goods depot, still in use today by William Waugh as a scrap recycler and which used to generate trainloads of scrap metal until the early 1970s.

The continuing quest of finding as many railtours as possible, and thankfully there was one much closer to home which was provided by the Branch Line Society with GBRF providing the motive power on 4th April 2026.

The Alstom Depot Dash was a charter provided by the BLS in conjunction with Alstom, the railtour began from Edge Hill in Liverpool which headed towards Liverpool Lime Street before reversing back heading towards Lonsight C.M.D. in Manchester, the first depot visit of the day before heading towards Oxley C.M.D. in Wolverhampton before a change of locomotive at Bescot Engineers Sidings before continuing down to Bletchley to scratch off goods lines before heading back up to Edge Hill for a final visit of another Alstom depot.

Other than the 2 separately booked Class 66s, the charter also saw a Class 57/3 provided in the form of 57306 which suitably carries Branch Line Society nameplates which she has carried since late-December 2025.

57306, a former Class 47 beginning her career as D1919 back in late-1965 having been built at Brush, Loughborough, before earning TOPS number, 47242 from early-1974 to indicate Class 47s with steam heating boilers. She would later be renumbered to 47659 from late-1986 after being retrofitted with electric train heating, and a further renumbering to 47814 from mid-1989 to indicate locomotives fitted with range extending fuel tanks.

47814 would become part of Virgin Cross Country during privatisation and earned the distinction of being the first Class 47 to be repainted into the operator's colours and was duly named Totnes Castle. She lasted until 2002 when it was identified to become part of the Class 57/3 conversion programme, being rebuilt as 57306 in early-2003 and became a Thunderbird for Virgin Trains. During her Virgin Trains career, she carried the name, Jeff Tracy.

After Virgin Trains dispensed with their Class 57/3 fleet, 57306 ultimately went to Network Rail from 2011 before later transferring over to DRS from 2014 and within the 9 years of service with the operator was named Her Majesty's Railway Inspectorate 175 from 2017 until 2024 where in the previous year was transferred to GBRF where she remains to this day.

57306 'Branch Line Society' chills out on the rear having passed through Hamstead on the Branch Line Society's Alstom Depot Dash, the 1Z58 09:57 Longsight Carriage M.D. to Bletchley.
