From 'A Son of the Middle Border' by Hamlin Garland, 1914:

Around us, on the swells, gray gophers whistled, and the nesting plover quaveringly called. Blackbirds clucked in the furrow and squat badgers watched with jealous eye the plow's inexorable progress toward their dens.

The weather was perfect June. Fleecy clouds sailed like snowy galleons from west to east, the wind was strong but kind, and we worked in a glow of satisfied ownership.

Many rattlesnakes ("massasaugas" Mr. Button called them), inhabited the moist spots and father and I killed several as we cleared the ground. Prairie wolves lurked in the groves and swales, but as foot by foot and rod by rod, the steady steel rolled the grass and the hazel brush under, all of these wild things died or hurried away, never to return. Some part of this tragedy I was able even then to understand and regret.

At last the wide "quarter section" lay upturned, black to the sun and the garden that had bloomed and fruited for millions of years, waiting for man, lay torn and ravaged.

The tender plants, the sweet flowers, the fragrant fruits, the busy insects, all the swarming lives which had been native here for untold centuries were utterly destroyed. It was sad and yet it was not all loss, even to my thinking, for I realized that over this desolation the green wheat would wave and the corn silks shed their pollen. It was not precisely the romantic valley of our song, but it was a rich and promiseful plot and my father seemed entirely content.

Blood red rose. In our parts, we call these queens of the garden.

Rise of the super blue blood moon (prior to the full eclipse as it set the following morning) east of Fort Davis, Texas.

A timelapse composite of the super blood moon over "Älvsborgsbron" bridge in Gothenburg, Sweden.

The celestial event, where the moon will line up with the Earth and the sun, will be seen across the UK and other parts of the Eastern hemisphere.

During the eclipse, the moon will pass through Earth’s darkest shadow and take on a red sheen, with the phenomenon being described as the 'blood moon'.

Festive Halloween t-shirts for the blood drive at my office today

More lightbox and macro fun today. I really wanted to make this work in color but could not get the orange peels to look right. Oh well, I'll have to try again another day. Off to make brunch for the family, enjoy your day wherever you go.

Pretty much the only salvageable photo. Sand is not a stable photography platform!

Blood Lily (Scadoxus multiflorus Raf.), Amaryllidaceae

That's the most that I have to give.

I always learn something when taking photos. Even though I have taken tens of thousands of them, I still manage to learn something pretty much every shutter click.

Tonight, I learned that to get the most amazing lunar eclipse photos, you need a motorized tracker that can match the earth's rotation.

So, without one of those devices, I had to bump up the ISO a ton, and bring the shutter speed higher than I really wanted.

But I still got a cool memory. This was right at peak (9:48 pm).

Some stats:

ISO 3200

1s shutter speed

f/6.3

Lens at 400mm

Image stabilization turned off

Shutter release

Shooting from live view so no lens movement at all

Long exposure noise reduction enabled

Processed in Topaz DeNoise to knock the noise down a bit, and Nik Sharpener Efex Pro to sharpen it back up after the noise reduction (I love that combination for sharp/low noise images).

Spent the morning with my buddy Louis shooting some wildflowers. Most of the wildflowers were gone but we hunted a bit and found a few to shoot. This is a blood root, which is a very tiny delicate flower. Given the brown background, I chose to place it against a texture by Kathleen Clemons.

We were greeted with some breeze, which for these flowers might have been a hurricane. But with a bit of patience and a high shutter speed I got some that were in focus.

This was shot with my D850 using a Lensbaby Velvet 85 fitted with +4 and +2 closeup filters. I believe this was shot at f/4.

Thanks for viewing my photos. Comments are always welcome.

Wow, that was an interesting experience… I never got up before for a lunar eclipse. But it’s definitely worth a glimpse ;)

Total Lunar Eclipse – Blood Moon

28.09.2015

It was a clear and cold night (-18c) but well worth it!

Total eclipse of the moon last night.

Interesting fruit. Not your normal orange but actually pretty tasty.

Jan 20 Blood Moon. Too many clouds to get the pics I was hoping for but with multiple shots was able to get enough good ones to put this together. The moon pretty much disappeared at full eclipse.

I think I should add more blood in this picture! I spent 5 minutes editing this.

I´m so sad I´m not entering HNTM3... My spring break is ending so I´ll have no time for the Sims2 or Hangout.

I woke up early and took the ferry and bus in to Gothenburg to buy my Canon 50mm f/1.4 USM. And oh my god, I'm in love with it. I never thought it would be so much difference from my f/1.8. Best decision ever. Got my motivation for photography back now.

Thanks for the wonderful comments lately. I appreciate them all so, so much. Thank you!

The full moon eclipse over Cornwall at 5.00am. Worth getting out of bed for.

I am brave.

And what the hell IS all this? No bruising, very little pain (so far) and just a mouth full of blood which I can deal with quite easily.

It can't have been that easy. I bet it's going to catch up with me tomorrow.

This little oddity Hydnellum peckii has so many common names, names as striking as the mushroom itself. Devil's Tooth, Strawberries and Cream, Bleeding Tooth.

Remarkably, young fruit bodies can "bleed" bright red droplets, which coincidentally have anticoagulant properties.

They show up around my woods only at this time of year, exuding these red droplets for a day or two, then the droplets go away and the mushroom looks unnoticeably ordinary.

What has probably happened here?

Why did the killer not taken his dagger?

Why he used an oriental dagger?

Whose is the wedding ring?

And most important is the question: Where is Mrs. Arlington now...?

Many thanks to all who take the time to view, comment and fave my images. Enjoy the day.

An early start this morning to get out and catch the super blue blood moon just before it set over Corfe Castle. It was even earlier than it needed to be as I managed to read the app wrong by 2 hours which Amy was less than pleased about!

Transition over two hours from super moon to blood moon.

115 Pictures in 2015 - # 111 - It's a Beautiful Day

I originally intended to fulfill this category with a sunny spring or summer evening in my back yard. But my spring and summer became complicated and I didn't get that done. But as I watched the lunar eclipse tonight I felt It's a Beautiful Day (Evening). Nothing really makes me feel as humble as the stars and the moon and the sun and the stellar phenomena. I feel blessed to be able to witness such things as a Full moon, Harvest moon, Blue moon, Super moon, and total Lunar Eclipse all in the same evening. It was indeed a Beautiful Day.

This should be an easy one. A bolete with a brown cap but with blood-red pores and a swollen reddish stipe. What's more, it bruised blue like several other boletes. I then realised just how fast it blued and made a little video. (My first on Flickr!!!) I had it down as B. subvelutipes but then realised it is not a UK species. B. queletii does the bluing thing but it does not seem quite right. Am I being stupid?

I believe this is Neoboletus luridiformis - panic over!
