BLM, the Idaho Trails Association, REI and local volunteers participated in National Public Lands Day 2014 in the Owyhee Canyonlands Wilderness. About 50 volunteers completed maintenance work on Shoofly Trail, a 7-mile hiking trail in the Little Jacks Creek Wilderness and removed wire fencing to improve wildlife habitat and wilderness characteristics. Kids even had the chance to participate in a homestead adventure quest course and nature scavenger hunt.

Some photos from work of the February 21, 2017 School Board meeting.

As some of the world seems to be turning rightward, the Des Moines School Board has emerged as a public body that is progressive and inclusive. Over the past month they have told immigrants and refugee students that they belong, unanimously approved a "sanctuary" resolution, unanimously approved a contract with teachers in advance of a new anti-public worker law, and last night voiced support for black students and showed it by wearing Black Lives Matter t-shirts.

This sign says "The people helping you here today believe Black Lives Matter and reject racial injustice. All are welcome here." This was outside Urban Outfitters on Guad. It was around 30 minutes from my apartment, but I was downtown studying with a friend. In my immediate community it comes up a decent amount in the context of the news and things going on in the area.

Sea Fest For Kids was a Success!

The Southeastern District Office of BLM Eastern States partnered with the Loxahatchee River Historical Society and other entities to bring Sea Fest for Kids at the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area to life.

Saturday, February 27 was a day that families could enjoy an afternoon on the waterfront with sea-inspired education and adventures for kids to celebrate Jupiter's coastal heritage and history. We spent the day connecting youth to America’s public lands; over 3,700 people attended the event, most of them elementary-aged youth.

The “Mystery Box” which represented the 7 values found on the Outstanding Natural Area and the leaf tracing artwork station were extremely popular. Also popular was the Every Kid in a Park station where 118 4th graders who are eager to visit our Federal lands and waters with their friends and families got their Every Kid passes.

#mypubliclandsroadtrip heads out this weekend to the South Fork of the Snake River in Idaho! The majestic South Fork of the Snake River flows for 66 miles through high mountain valleys, rugged canyons, and broad flood plains. This section of the Snake River supports the largest riparian cottonwood gallery forest in the West and is among the most unique and diverse ecosystems in Idaho. It is a birdwatching paradise that is home to 126 bird species, including 21 raptors (birds of prey) and is designated as a National Important Bird Area. The river also supports the largest native cutthroat fishery outside of Yellowstone National Park. The South Fork is known throughout the country as a premier blue ribbon trout fishery, and was selected as the host site for the 1997 World Fly-Fishing Championship.

Take a step back in time at Oregon's Rogue River Ranch National Historic Site!

Located at the mouth of Mule Creek and nestled in the heart of the National Wild and Scenic River’s wild section of the Rogue River, this historic site tells the story of the area’s transition from mining to recreation and conservation.

In an effort to preserve this heritage for all to enjoy, the BLM completed a substantial remodel of the main ranch house between 2017 and 2019. The remodel, which focused on improving visitor experience, developing formal museum exhibits, and improving interpretive signage, provides historic context and information on the unique lives of the area’s inhabitants through history.

The museum is open now! If you're interested in visiting, you can access the area via boat, hike, or car.

Repairing the pavement.. I think.

BLM policy is to allow the safe use of firearms on public lands – for both hunting and shooting sports – as provided for in state law, and to cooperate with state authorities in the enforcement of firearms regulations.
