The Bureau of Land Management sent Equipment Shop employees to the BFX Fire Apparatus factory in Weatherford, Texas to perform comprehensive vehicle inspections on new fire vehicles. Over the course of three days the equipment shop inspected eight Type-Six Engines and three Command Vehicles. This process is done to find and address any discrepancies between the received product and the specifications established in the contract before the vehicle is put into service.

The Equipment Shop takes on inspection projects many times a year in addition to research and development, modifications and repairs, and other fire vehicle related duties.

With towering cliffs, flowing water and a rich diversity of flora and fauna, Aravaipa Canyon Wilderness remains as one of Arizona's truly unique areas. Its 19,410 acres of designated wilderness beckons adventurers who yearn for solitude and scenic splendor. Located in southeast Arizona, roughly between Tucson and Phoenix, the wilderness and surrounding public and private land conserve a vital ecosystem for future generations.

Aravaipa Creek flows year-round, an unusual phenomenon in the Arizona desert. Nurtured by this abundant water, large sycamore, ash, cottonwood, and willow trees flourish along the stream, flanked by other riparian vegetation. In the fall, a kaleidoscope of brilliant red and golden leaves contrasts dramatically with the surrounding Sonoran Desert landscape.

The Bureau of Land Management manages Aravaipa Canyon Wilderness to protect its essential wilderness character and fragile environment while providing the visitor with a world-class opportunity for primitive and unconfined recreation. You must have a permit to hike, backpack, and hunt in Aravaipa Canyon and all the side canyons. Learn more about Aravaipa Canyon permits.

Through the Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009, Congress designated the Red Cliffs National Conservation Area (NCA) in Washington County, Utah “to conserve, protect, and enhance …the ecological, scenic, wildlife, recreational, cultural, historical, natural, educational, and scientific resources” of public lands in the NCA.

The Colorado Plateau, Great Basin Desert, and Mojave Desert overlap in Washington County. In this transition zone, unusual plant and animal species have evolved, including the dwarf bearclaw-poppy and Shivwits milk-vetch, small native plants that grow nowhere else on earth. The hot, arid Mojave Desert provides habitat for diverse wildlife, such as kit fox, Gambel’s quail, and the Mojave Desert tortoise. This native tortoise is listed under the Endangered Species Act and is at risk of extinction due to habitat loss and other factors. The newly-designated Red Mountain and Cottonwood Canyon Wilderness areas are also within this NCA. Here, hikers, backpackers, and equestrians can enjoy scenic vistas, solitude, and natural quiet, just a few miles drive from local communities.

More than 130 miles of non-motorized recreation trails (hiking, mountain biking, and equestrian trail riding) are available for public use in the NCA. The Red Cliffs Recreation Area offers camping and day use areas, in a developed site where fees are collected. All motorized vehicle travel, including Off-Highway Vehicles, is limited to designated roads in the NCA. No motorized or mechanized vehicle travel is allowed in the Red Mountain and Cottonwood Canyon Wilderness areas, without special authorization from BLM.

In the heart of California's Central Coast, the Fort Ord National Monument encompasses a sweeping landscape of vivid beauty and rich natural diversity. One of the few remaining expanses of large, contiguous open space in the increasingly developed Monterey Bay and Salinas Valley area, this area is a rolling landscape of maritime chaparral, oak woodland, grassland, vernal pool and wet meadow. Originating in the Pleistocene Epoch, ancient dunes provide the foundation for this landscape's unique array of plant and wildlife communities.

Unique habitats support a tremendous diversity of mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians. Many visitors to the national monument get a chance to see bobcats, coyotes, black-tailed deer, rabbits and ground squirrels. Mountain lions, California badgers, red fox and Monterey ornate shrews also share this coastal treasure. The skies are patrolled by vultures, red-tailed hawks, and kestrels while California quail, turkeys and road runners often scamper about on the ground. In the spring, don't be surprised to see California king-snakes, gopher snakes, garter snakes and occasionally rattlesnakes sunning themselves on the sun-baked roads. In the winter, you might see the federally protected California tiger salamander on the move towards vernal pools as they fill with water.
