Raymond Pettibon:
A Pen of All Work
New Museum, NYC
"Raymond Pettibon: A Pen of All Work is the largest presentation of Pettibon’s work to date and features more than eight hundred drawings from the 1960s to the present. It also includes a number of his early self-produced zines and artist’s books, as well as several videos made in collaboration with fellow artists and his musician friends. This unique collection of objects and distinctly immersive installation provides insight into the mind of one of the most influential and visionary living American artists."

My homemade Telecaster relic. It is a Fernandez telecaster with a Fender replacement neck and a custom decal. It might not be obvious from this photo but I worked quite a bit by various means to make this like a Fender "relic" and when people see this guitar in person they often ask, "What year is it?"
I took the body apart and left it out in the sun for days; I dragged it down the sidewalk; I studied photos of very old electric guitars from a book I have and sanded the finish off on the finger board and neck in a similar pattern; I put sandpaper on the front of my shirt and along my right sleeve and played it. In retrospect this sounds sort of dumb but I had a fun project and the guitar sounds great and looks and feels great. Plus at this point I don't feel like I need to baby it.
As far as I can remember I went to all of the shows, although I cannot remember a club called TRAXX on Gratiot. All of these shows were in Detroit.
Rollins is about to explode... I love the feeling of motion in this shot!
So the Floodzone was pretty aptly named... We waited outside in a Tsunami to get inside and NOW the humidity from wet clothes and sweaty humans was starting to build up. I had to keep wiping a narsty mix of fog and people funk off of my camera's lens the rest of the night...
But the show made up for all of that...
On tour with Black Flag, circa 1982 ish. Great story behind this which i'll post someday. This shot is from the drinking show at Mabel's, Champaign IL
Inspired by "Falling to Pieces" by Faith No More and "Can't Decide" by Black Flag... but I can't decide which song.
Also want to mention this morphing was inspired by the works of JK Potter. www.jkpotter.com/

I have always been not-so-secretly partial to Keith Morris on vocals. Now everybody knows. Sorry, Hank!

The Black Flag, in western symbolism means no surrender, it's the antagonist of the white flag of surrender. In the dramatic siege of Barcelona and Cardona, in the war of 1714, a black flag with the words "Viurem lliures o morirem" flough on the walls; it meant "We'll live free or we'll die". An American similar emblem just 60 years later, was the "join or die". Three hundred years later, a modern black flag unites the Santa Eulalia cross, tha one of the most potent symbols of Catalan political freedom, and the star of the modern "starry" flag of Catalan independence. No surrender till Victory and Freedom from Spain (and France).

My acoustic guitar case has few stickers. It is the most econo Martin acoustic model, a D-1. Also pictured is my G&L Legacy Special (stratocaster knock-off) and my homemade Telecaster relic. It is a Fernandez tele with a fender replacement neck. It isn;t obvious from tis photo but I worked quite a bit by various means to make this like a Fender "relic" and when people see this guitar in person they often ask, "What year is it?"

I remember back in the Nixon vs McGovern era I found a McGovern bumper sticker exactly like the one on the guitar case and put it on my grandmother's car. She DIDN'T THINK THAT WAS FUNNY! The first of many reasons, I thin, she stopped liking me.
Way up on a hill behind Capetown at Yzerfontein, Western Cape with the sea on the horizon were lots of wild flowers.... This is !Kwa ttu (San/Bushmen) country and a beautiful area I must say, likewise the people...
The "!Khwa ttu" were the indigenous people of Southern Africa, their ancestors being the original hunter-gatherers of Africa who encountered a paradox fate over time:
While thousands were persecuted, killed or incorporated into local
rural serfdom, some managed to survive in relative isolation and
cling to a semi-traditional life-style.
"Fins a reeixir!", això vol dir aquesta frase llatina, ja emprada en el setge de Barcelona de 1714.
Reeixim!!!

The latin phrase "donec perficiam" means "till we prevail". It was a motto used by the Catalan defenders of Barcelona in the infamous siege of 1713-1714.
Here three Catalan independence flags, each with it's own history. From top to bottom, the estelada, born in the early decades of the XX Century (inspired by the independence of Cuba), the flag of St. George (used by England but also as the patron of Catalonia) with the said motto. And 3rd and most dramatic, the also historical black banner of 1714. This was also used in the walls of Barcelona, with the words "Viurem lliures o morirem", "we shall live free or die".

I'm about
To have a nervous breakdown
My head really hurts
If I don't find a way out of here
I'm gonna go berserk 'cuz
I'm crazy and I'm hurt
Head on my shoulders
It's going...berserk
I hear the same old talk talk talk
The same old lines
Don't do me that today, yeah
If you know what's good for you you'll get out of my way 'cuz
I'm crazy and I'm hurt
Head on my shoulders
Going...berserk
I won't apologize
For acting outta line
You see the way I am
You leave any time you can 'cuz
I'm crazy and I'm hurt
Head on my shoulders
Going...berserk
Crazy! Crazy! Crazy! Crazy!
I don't care what you fuckin' do
I don't care what you fuckin' say
I'm so sick of everything
I just want to...die!

ALABASHOOLAAA!!!!
When we were notified about our acceptance to Gacha Garden, we instantly wanted to do something with flowers but in the atypically thought of way. We thought of all the ways flowers are used for accessories to fashion or given as a reward. We realized how overlooked flowers in everyday settings are and how they are related to feelings and events in our lives.
Each of these settings are important things to each of us. From the drawings and picked flowers from children to the flowers at a funeral. Each setting is very much personifications of REAL LIFE for us.
Each of these settings has very personal meaning and touches from the creators. The children's drawings are from friends (Adoration), the notes from him & her are real (Duty), the prayer cards and the vases designed to look like urns (Grief), the old hotel keys and chocolates (passion), the tear stained letter with instances from our own past (Heart Ache), bonding with friends (Chill), and the sweet life when things are good enough to have precious metals (Indulgence).
The two I want to draw the most attention to are Past Due and Granny.
Granny will be available ONLY at the Gacha Garden event as a Seed of Inspiration (SOI). It is dedicated to the loss of one of our grandmothers. She was renowned for creating new breeds of day lilies and her penchant for pottery in the kitchen. She would name each new breed of flowers after her relatives and loved ones.
Past Due (Rare) is an all too real struggle for many people. From past due bills to needing medication to deal with emotional problems, and neglecting to care for even the simplest of things (ie, th wilting flower and the mess it left). All of it can be overwhelming for some people at points in their life. If you know somebody like this, spend some time with them and remind them they are more valuable their their overdue bills and a bottle of pills!
We hopes you really enjoy the set, it was made with a lot of heart and time between caring for children, loss, loved ones, good times, and the myriad obligations of real life ;)

I forgot to mention that I got tickets to see Henry Rollins next Friday! The reason I mention this is because I had bought Black Flag's Damaged record on the day I took this photo and it was supposed to be the basis of my image. Of course my plans failed and I ended up with this uninspired (and unfocused) work.
So this was taken 1 week ago. From tomorrow my 365 day project goes back to normal! And I am so looking forward to it.
