There were lots of black skimmers standing around on Cumberland Island, Georgia when we visited last year.
The remarkable bill of the Black Skimmer sets it apart from all other American birds. The large red and black bill is knife-thin and the lower mandible is longer than the upper. The bird drags the lower bill through the water as it flies along, hoping to catch small fish.
A first for me. Chuffed to have seen one on the last day of 2021. Brightlingsea, Essex. Happy New Year!

Recently I've been spending time photographing this summer visitor. I've been trying to get inflight shots of them skimming for fish. So far I have not been able to get any images the make the grade. They are fast and maneuverable fliers!
For now, here's a portrait shot.
I'll keep working on the action images!

The Black Jacobin is a striking black and white endemic of woodland habitats from eastern Brazil south to northeast Argentina in a fairly narrow band along the coast. It feeds on the nectar of various native and introduced shrubs and trees and will occasionally occur in congregations of 50 or more individuals around particularly rich nectar resources and when it happens they become very aggressive in the dispute for nectar. Picture taken at Sítio Macuquinho, São Paulo.
Wishing everyone a peaceful bokeh Wednesday!
Thanks a lot for your visits, comments, faves, invites, etc. Very much appreciated!

Surprised to witness the ungainly spectacle of this stunning water bird clambering on to dry land! This didn't last long before it slipped back into its comfort zone amongst the waves. Norfolk coast in late November (UK) (5446)
The Black Swans took over most of the Braeside wetlands. The frosty morning air is filled with their songs and there is drama and ballet scenes too.
