Edward Lawrence Schieffelin (1847–1897) was an American prospector and Indian Scout who discovered silver in the Arizona Territory, an event that led to the founding of Tombstone. He entered into a partnership with his brother Al and mining engineer Richard Gird in a handshake deal that produced millions of dollars in wealth for all three men.
There are widely varying estimates of the value of gold and silver mined during the course of Tombstone's history. In 1883, writer Patrick Hamilton estimated that during the first four years of activity the mines produced about $25,000,000 (approximately $818 million today). Other estimates include $40 million to $85 million (about $1.36 billion to $2.88 billion today).
It was Ed's wish to be buried in the dress of a prospector, his old pick and canteen with him, on top of the granite hills, about three miles westerly from the City of Tombstone, Arizona, and that a monument, such as prospectors build when locating a mining claim, be built over his grave.

i watched the years flash through your face,
and i locked my anger in my lungs.
so every breath stung more and more.
a wave of whips across my spine,
a billion bees trapped in my chest,
nails on a chalkboard every time.
What's happening to this spiral galaxy? Just a few hundred million years ago, NGC 2936, the upper of the two large galaxies shown, was likely a normal spiral galaxy -- spinning, creating stars -- and minding its own business. But then it got too close to the massive elliptical galaxy NGC 2937 below and took a dive. Dubbed the Porpoise Galaxy for its iconic shape, NGC 2936 is not only being deflected but also being distorted by the close gravitational interaction. A burst of young blue stars forms the nose of the porpoise toward the right of the upper galaxy, while the center of the spiral appears as an eye. Alternatively, the galaxy pair, together known as Arp 142, look to some like a penguin protecting an egg. Either way, intricate dark dust lanes and bright blue star streams trail the troubled galaxy to the lower right. The featured re-processed image showing Arp 142 in unprecedented detail was taken by the Hubble Space Telescope last year. Arp 142 lies about 300 million light years away toward the constellation, coincidently, of the Water Snake (Hydra). In a billion years or so the two galaxies will likely merge into one larger galaxy.

The busy transcon runs through northern Ontario's boreal forest, the largest in the world. Covering approximately 270 million hectares it comprises nearly one-third of the world's forest. Each year, approximately three billion birds migrate north to nest in its spruce, pine, and birch trees. More specifically to the area pictured here, Spanish River Provincial Park protects both the river and what scientists now believe is the world's largest red and white pine forest which is gaining recognition for its global significance - all sourced from the immersive "Tripping Train 185" documentary which I highly recommend watching - MP 18.5 Nemegos Subdivision.
The Merdeka 118 building is designed with a mixture of diamond-shaped glass facades to signify the diversity of Malaysians. The design was made to resemble and inspired by [1st Prime Minister of Malaysia] Tunku Abdul Rahman's outstretched hand gesture while chanting "Merdeka!", when he proclaimed the independence of Malaysia on 31 August 1957. The project was funded by the Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB), a state-owned enterprise of the Malaysian government, at a cost of more than RM5 billion. (Source: Wikipedia)

Despite its unassuming appearance, the edge-on spiral galaxy captured in the left half of this NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope image is actually quite remarkable.
Located about one billion light-years away in the constellation of Eridanus, this striking galaxy — known as LO95 0313-192 — has a spiral shape similar to that of the Milky Way. It has a large central bulge, and arms speckled with brightly glowing gas mottled by thick lanes of dark dust. Its companion, sitting in the right of the frame, is known rather unpoetically as [LOY2001] J031549.8-190623.
Jets, outbursts of superheated gas moving at close to the speed of light, have long been associated with the cores of giant elliptical galaxies, and galaxies in the process of merging. However, in an unexpected discovery, astronomers found LO95 0313-192, even though it is a spiral galaxy, to have intense radio jets spewing out from its center. The galaxy appears to have two more regions that are also strongly emitting in the radio part of the spectrum, making it even rarer still.
The discovery of these giant jets in 2003 — not visible in this image, but indicated in this earlier Hubble composite — has been followed by the unearthing of a further three spiral galaxies containing radio-emitting jets in recent years. This growing class of unusual spirals continues to raise significant questions about how jets are produced within galaxies, and how they are thrown out into the cosmos.

Excerpt from en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hong_Kong%E2%80%93Zhuhai%E2%80%93Ma...:
The Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge (HZMB) is a 55-kilometre (34 mi) bridge–tunnel system consisting of a series of three cable-stayed bridges, an undersea tunnel, and four artificial islands. It is both the longest sea crossing and the longest open-sea fixed link in the world. The HZMB spans the Lingding and Jiuzhou channels, connecting Hong Kong and Macau with Zhuhai—a major city on the Pearl River Delta in China.
The HZM Bridge was designed to last for 120 years and cost ¥127 billion (US$18.8 billion) to build. The cost of constructing the Main Bridge was estimated at ¥51.1 billion (US$7.56 billion) funded by bank loans and shared among the governments of mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau.
Originally set to be opened to traffic in late 2016, the structure was completed on 6 February 2018 and journalists were subsequently taken for a ride over the bridge. On 24 October 2018 the HZMB was opened to the public after its inauguration a day earlier by Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
It's only when you spend time cloning out plane trails on a 170 shot star trail sequence do you realise that where I live has crowded skies full of planes....!

I just thought this was a pretty picture worth taking, but I am always digging deeper for geologic explanations.
The rocks in the foreground are pre-Cambrian granite dated at 1.6 billion years and are part of a batholith that covers the region immediately east of the Sawatch Range and upper Arkansas Valley in central Colorado. The highly eroded Buffalo Peaks, in the background, was volcanically active 28 million years ago.
My primary source for Colorado geology is the book "Messages In Stone: Colorado's Colorful Geology." (Colorado Geological Survey, Second edition revised by Vincent Matthews, Ph.D.)
This was taken at Pigeon Point Lighthouse with my new found astro optic..the 20 mm Nikon 1.8 lens..a beauty to shoot the milky way in under 10 secs!
According to Wikepedia thats how many stars are in the Milky Way… we could see quite a few of them the other night at Holy Island :-)
Dave & I headed to holy island to try & capture the milky way, as the conditions seemed quite optimal. The causeway was open, clear skies predicted, moon setting at about 3.45 & the milky way was due to rise above the horizon at about that time too. Luckily for a change all of these factors worked out & we could see the display filling the sky to the east of the island :-)

I'm too tired to write my own copy for this, so I'll let the St Louis website do it for me...
"In the early 1950's, the Vess Bottling Company erected a large replica of a Vess Soda Bottle at the corner of Hampton and Gravois Boulevards. The bottle was 25 1/2 feet tall and weighed over 2,000 pounds. It stood on a steel pole which revolved at a rate of three revolutions per minute. The bottle was lit by 600 lineal feet of neon tubing. After being found in storage in the late 1980's, the bottle found a new home at the corner of 6th and O'Fallon Streets. The bottle was designated as a City Landmark in 1990."
I've been through STL a many, many times, and either I haven't have time to search this out, or just plain forgot. Issue resolved!
...but man, it much have been spectacular when it had neon back in the day!
FYI... this is a "daytime" visit. The area can be sketchy. Watch your back.
There Are Billions of Stars,
Even more than grains of sand on a beach
But even though I look at the night skies
In wonder and amazement
I realize that all that matters
At times like this
Is you...and me.
Another work of short poetry or prose to complement the image captured one evening in Big Bend National Park while looking at the night skies and stars. This is in the Chisos Mountain Lodge area looking to the east with Casa Grande in the lower portion of the image foreground. The idea of the image itself was to focus on the night skies with countless stars above. The moon was still up, and didn't really allow for seeing more clearly the spiral arm of Milky Way present. The rest of the image in capturing this was to find a focus point that I could use and then setting the shutter speed and other settings I'd experimented with several months back.

"It is our great privilege to announce our newest development in automated home security; the Archangel Mark 2.
We've combined elegance, beauty, and efficiency into a next-gen solution that absolutely breaks the mold. Synthetic titanium armor and close-range thrusters repaired and fueled by the unit itself. The arm-blades heat to 400 degrees and are capable of slicing through the heaviest armor deployed in any warzone to date. The wings align with the thrusters to provide gliding capabilities and serve as VIP shielding, rated to stop multiple rifle rounds.
Security and surveillance capabilities have seen a significant upgrade; adaptive materials placed along the feet allow the unit to move at a sound of 0.1 decibels, invisible to the human ear. To top it all off, we've added a full-spectrum surveillance package into the dome; infrared, radio and audio, thermal, electro-magnetic, you name it.
In over one thousand simulations, spanning VIP protection, assault, and search-and-destroy, the Archangel Mark 2 has a 99.8 success rate against 12 man fire teams with vehicle support. In short, the Archangel Mark 2 is swift, deadly and virtually unstoppable and for the right price, she can be yours."

Good Sunday everyone!
One Billion Rising in Second Life invites YOU to stand with ONE voice for an important Campaign.
I Rise! Is the heart, soul and foundation of the mass call to action of the One Billion Rising Revolutionary Campaign, founded on February 14, 2012. To best understand the significance of this monumental show of solidarity, I'll share the description via the website:
"One Billion Rising is the biggest mass action to end violence against women (cisgender, transgender, and those who hold fluid identities that are subject to gender-based violence) in human history. (The reality that): 1 in 3 women across the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. That’s ONE BILLION WOMEN AND GIRLS. Every February, we rise – in countries across the world – to show our local communities and the world what one billion looks like and shine a light on the rampant impunity and injustice that survivors most often face. We rise through dance to express joy and community and celebrate the fact that we have not been defeated by this violence. We rise to show we are determined to create a new kind of consciousness – one where violence will be resisted until it is unthinkable."
This declaration has inspired survivors, as well as supporters to Rise and we invite YOU to take a stand TODAY, in the SL: One Billion Rising Campaign. Through the eye of your lens, we're encouraging you to capture the spirit of this cause either through the perspective of one suffering at the hands of or rising/overcoming the suffering to live again. We encourage you to visit the OBR website, as well as the curated Pinterest, linked below to inspire your image. We understand the sensitive nature of this Campaign and the impact these images may provoke. However, in perusing of the website, we're certain you'll be empowered by the images of celebration, the marches and most of all, the courage, love as well as staggering rally of humanity against injustice.
EVERYONE is welcomed to participate as the Second Life One Billion Rising is a 24 hour, Multi Sim Event featuring live music, Poetry, dancing, 2D and 3D Art exhibits. Please read over the guidelines below and RISE with us in ONE voice on Friday, February 14th!
