After winter snow, sleet and frost - the thaw begins.

Lyrics from „The day begins“, The Moody Blues:

Cold hearted orb that rules the night,

Removes the colours from our sight.

Red is grey and yellow white,

But we decide which is right,

And which is an illusion.

Pinprick holes in a colourless sky,

Let insipid figures of light pass by,

The mighty light of ten thousand suns,

Challenges infinity and is soon gone.

Night time, to some a brief interlude,

To others the fear of solitude.

Brave Helios wake up your steeds,

Bring the warmth the countryside needs.

THANKS FOR YOUR VISIT AND FAVES

Gehakkelde aurelia

Chopped aurelia.

In the Netherlands, the species was a fairly common butterfly at the beginning of the twentieth century. Thereafter, the occurrence decreased, so that in 1925 the animal was rare and was not seen at all in the north. In the following thirty years the numbers increased, and then decreased again in the 1960s until the species was only observed in Limburg and North Brabant. The first half of the 1970s brought another brief revival. Since the eighties of the twentieth century, the distribution area of the chopped aurelia has been expanding rapidly northwards. The Netherlands has now been almost completely colonized and the hackled aurelia is a common butterfly.

World's first steam powered clock

Historic Gastown

Vancouver, British Columbia

Canada

The insides of this clock is where the magic begins....

Built in 1977. Raymond Saunders' first steam clock was built in 1977 to solve the issue of a steam vent in a popular sidewalk for the renovated Gastown district of Vancouver. Owned by the City of Vancouver, BC Canada

The steam clock's plaque reads:

THE GASTOWN STEAM CLOCK

Designed and built by

Raymond L. Saunders

Horologist

The world's first steam powered clock has been created for the enjoyment of everyone. The live steam winds the weights and blows the whistles. Every 4.5 minutes one steel weight will travel by steam power to the top of the clock. The gravity driven "falling ball" drive was 'engineered' by Douglas L. Smith. Each quarter hour the clock will sound the Westminster Chimes. The large whistle will sound once on the hour. The steam is supplied by the underground system of Central Heat Distributor's Limited. The component parts cost $42,000 and the clock weighs over two tons.

A few years ago the clock was refit and is not entirely steam powered. It also has three small electric motors to help operate two internal fans, one of which blows the steam out the top, and another that controls the valves that play the tunes on the five steam whistles mounted atop the clock case.

The large central whistle, which was taken off the CPR steam tug Naramata, counts off the full hours while the four auxiliary whistles chime the Westminster Quarters every quarter hour. The number of chimes matches the number of quarter hours that have passed.

"Often I have found that the one thing that can save is the thing which appears most to threaten. One has to go down into what most fears and in that process comes a saving flicker of light and energy that, even if it does not produce the courage of a hero, at any rate enables a trambling mortal to take one step further."

Timed this capture with the waves fully retreated to get that morning light on the wet sand.

I took this with my new Apple 16 cell phone.

Quite a large number of people with their augers setting up for the ice fishing season on the Red River.

Good riddance to 2021, the worst year of my lifetime. I wish 2022 is a happier year for everyone. Stay safe and healthy.

Not today,not tomorrow,but someday.

As we wait for the lunchtime concert to begin in Chichester Cathedral, Ray keeps the seats whilst I have a little look around with my camera.

On Tuesday I came across Andrea and David in the audience. We had met them on a previous visit when they agreed to a portrait for my strangers' project.

Andrea was wearing a winter hat and had previously told me she has quite a collection. I asked for a portrait; she agreed.

thank you for your visits to my photostream, any faves and comments

Autumn according to the meteorological calendar begins in September and ends in November. In the astronomical calendar, the beginning of autumn is marked by the autumn equinox which occurs around the 22 September.

During the autumn equinox the sun shines directly on the equator and day and night around the globe are of almost equal length - a day and night of roughly 12 hours each.
