I awoke at six o'clock this morning, and discovered an overnight guest had been sleeping outside of my bedroom window. She is a very large cow moose, and she seems to be all alone. If she did have a calf, a predator must have gotten it. Sadly that happens a lot here in Alaska.

*(I grabbed my closest camera and discovered it had about 3% left in the battery. Since we are still below zero - I didn't feel like bundling up and wading through snow to capture Mrs. Moose - and since my windows are frozen shut at the moment - I had no choice but to grab this shot through a double paned window. But for some people that may never see this view from their own window - I thought I'd share it anyway.)

I awoke a skeleton in a baby's arms

She sighed, "Darling, we are all dealing with this,

In a different way"

So I cry and put my head in my hands

And I dreamt about that storm that's gonna come

And swallow us all up

So put my name on a list and give it to everyone that I love

So come on, Dil and Thomas,

Why'd you drink yourself to death?

Before you read this one,

That I've been working on

I think I've got my problems pegged

But oh, forget it, let's turn Revolver over again

So I scored seven bucks

From this kid in my dorm,

He was high and pre-occupied

And I went to meet the man who waits for me

On one-hundred-eighty-seventh Street

He's not my friend,

He's not my brother,

I'm just looking for a way to feel ignored

So put the guns in their slings,

I'm not with you in Rockland no more

So come on, Dil and Thomas,

Why'd you drink yourself to death?

Before you read this one,

That I've been working on

I think I've got my problems pegged

But oh, forget it, let's turn Revolver over again

I don't wanna die

I don't wanna die

(We go gently, we go gracefully)

I don't wanna die

I don't wanna die

(We go gently, we go gracefully)

I don't wanna die

I don't wanna die

I awoke to find some demon had roamed and my computer room was haunted...Beware ye all on All Hallows Eve!

To all my pals out there, have a wicked good weekend!

Nighttime Playground...

This morning we awoke to a thick heavy blanket of white dense fog. it rolled in overnight and got thicker with each passing hour.

At the crack of dawn i was up and out, even before the sunrise to got a few shots. i figured the fog would dissipate by seven or so. so id best get as many as i could before it burned off.

this shot is at the the new children's playground the sun wasnt up yet and the lights shrouded in fog cast an eerie glow over the half assembled equipment.

I awoke early and looked at the weather forecast. It forecast a sunny morning, so I wrapped up warm with many layers as the first frost of the year had appeared.

As I walked I watched the morning break, with the blue hour turning to the golden hour and then the sunrise itself.

a wonderful experience to see what most people miss.

We awoke to the landscape - as if in a dream

I awoke from the miasma

Passing swiftly through the moor

This is here, waters stir

And in the distance all that was lost

If you’ll bear with me, you’ll fear of me

You’d never leave me to a fate with you…

Like modern science fiction writers have constructed in movies Total Recall or The Matrix, a Chinese sage, Zhuang Zhou from 300 B.C., questioned what is real. Should the senses be fully trusted to determine what was real and what was not? Zhuang Zhou, a master of Chinese written language, logic, and whimsy, was a cross between Lewis Carrol and Socrates. He pushed the boundaries.

This is the original text from the classic book of Zhuangzi by sage Zhuang Zhou. It brings back memories. I had to read this outloud and translate it as a college student to the class in real time, with the professor stopping to comment or interjecting to correct me. Fun times!

Translation: Once, Zhuang Zhou dreamed he was a butterfly, a butterfly flitting and fluttering about, happy with himself and doing as he pleased. He didn't know that he was Zhuang Zhou. Suddenly he woke up and there he was, solid and unmistakable Zhuang Zhou. But he didn't know if he was Zhuang Zhou who had dreamt he was a butterfly, or a butterfly dreaming that he was Zhuang Zhou. Between Zhuang Zhou and the butterfly there must be some distinction! This is called the Transformation of Things.

[Rather than take liberties, which I am sorely tempted, I am using an excellent and established English translation by Burton Watson. [Zhuangzi: Basic Writings (3rd ed.), translated by Burton Watson. New York: Columbia University Press]

I find it cool that a butterfly of 400 B.C. is nowadays still called a butterfly using the same Chinese word and same Chinese characters, hudie. Although the characters are the same, Chinese nowadays has changed in pronunciation. I suspect the first original pronunciation started with more of a "w" sound rather than "h", and the second ended with a consonant, "p". But that's a topic for another day.

I awoke to a nice cool morning. (40 degrees Fahrenheit) The raven babies were screeching their little heads off, as the parents were busy searching for their breakfast. Many Robins dotted the landscape around our cabin, while snowshoe hare's (with noses to the ground), were in search of their favorite breakfast greens. The other day as I was taking a little walk through our boreal forest, I found that mushrooms have pushed their way up through the forest floor, and are already being harvested by squirrels. They are easy to spot, as the squirrels nibble them off at the base - and haul them up into the spruce trees to dry. Looking at my calendar it tells me that it is summer - but reading some of the signs in the forest it is telling me that autumn is not that far away.

I awoke yesterday to thick fog, but as I drove to work I found the sun was actually only a few feet above beneath a thick blanket of cloud

I awoke to clear starry skies this morning and wondered if it was worth the walk up Moel Siabod for dawn. By the time I got into Cwm Foel cloud was building in all directions so I stayed put, wondering if there would be any early light...I needn't have worried, as when it came, it came in a dazzling show of colour!

I awoke from the couch and saw this image.I immediately grabbed my phone and started shooting.

The scene I awoke to after a starry night next to the Etive. Frosty and icy, with a fog covering the whole of Rannoch Moor and Glencoe, hiding the warm sunshine trying to burn through from above.

It was a morning of two quite different conditions. I awoke to a thick fog and so headed out Brentmoor Heath. When I got to the location there was no fog at all, but there was a frost. Not quite what I was expecting, but at least gave some nice conditions. Then the light began to change and a low hanging mist rolled in and hung around for a number of hours. Couldn't have hoped for more!

Old Dr. Full awoke from the horrors of the night to the horrors of the day. His eyes rested on a little black bag in the center of the room. "I could have sworn," said Dr. Full, "I hocked that two years ago!" He hitched over and reached the bag, and then realized it was some stranger's kit, arriving here he did not know how.

When I awoke I felt the call to go

Those places that I never thought I'd go

I spent the time to see which way to walk

But now that road just crumbles as I talk

So you've tried to pass along your doubt

Oh you need somebody's ears to hear you shout

All your wasted days and twisted ways are up

So now it's time to see the cards you're dealt

So don't let the ones that want to steal your dreams

They'll steal your dreams away

Just laugh and let it go

Don't let the ones that want to steal your dreams

They'll steal your dreams away

Just laugh and let it go

I awoke last night to the sound of thunder (well actually it was 4:30 am September 12, 2009). How far off I sat and wondered. Ode to Bob Seger's Night Moves, www.lyricsfreak.com/b/bob+seger/night+moves_20021973.html .

Drove to the Marin Headlands but it was way too foggy so I went low near the Coast Guard station for this shot of the Golden Gate Bridge. Sat in my car with a remote shutter listening to podcasts. Wrapped a poncho around my camera when the rain started. Took lots of shots, this was about my fourth shot of the morning when I got lucky. You should of heard me say "YEEEESS!" when I saw the huge strike and the sky lit up white/blue with light. Ooooh, what a lucky man he was (Ode to ELP).

Done

I awoke to their scratching around my table picking up peanuts before dawn. I quickly got up and tossed some more nuts on the table and hoped they would return upon sunrise so I could get some photos. They hung around in the pre-dawn hour and stayed until the sun came up. Like the Whisky Jacks, they too disappeared not long after that.

From the first Father Son Railfan Extravaganza in 2006. Here is what I wrote from my notes when I put this on my extinct blog back in 2006.

The next morning we awoke to clouds and general gloom. We took the long way around to Hawks nest, heading down a long winding road from Minden, expecting to come out at the end of a bridge, instead coming out beside it. But it would do, despite the crappy weather. I am certainly not against rainy weather, I just don't care for blank skies. There was a little ragged cloud around the hills in the distance, which was nice. Better a little sun and a little ragged cloud, but it was not to be.

So we sat. And sat. A lady, her husband, their dog and a boat came along after a while, and the lady tied the dog up on the dock while they put the boat in. The dog regarded me, I regarded the dog, and we went back to ignoring each other. I talked to the lady, they had a cabin on the river, and were going out there to get ready for the summer. The dog would swim when they got there, and then not for the rest of the year.

So I watched the couple put the boat in, and get in and push off. She had told me the dog barked until the engine started, because he liked to help. Sure enough, the old man sat down by the engine, and the dog started to bark. He pulled the cord, it coughed, caught, and the dog stopped barking, and went back the front of the boat, tail held high.

At this point, it was the only action out there.

Around 9 that familiar echoing rumble filled the valley. We couldn't tell which track it was on, because at Hawk's Nest the tracks split, one heading across the river on a nice bridge, the other disappearing into more inaccessible gorge. So unless the train was on track 1, we would see but a fleeting glimpse through the trees.

fortunately, it was on track 1, and crossed the bridge in front of us, disappearing into the damp, gloomy and mysterious gorge.

This morning I awoke to a blustry, windy and cold day. After cruising the back roads for a few hours, I came across a group of Highland cattle carousing in a snow storm. Not birds, but one takes what is offered.

I awoke this morning to yet another #dreich day ahead. I made the coffee and toast, we drank it. I made the teas and noticed shadows on the bedroom wall! Shadows, Sun? Surely not!

She awoke with an angel standing at the foot of her bed.

“Do not fear me for I am Jujunezba, Angel of Heaven.”

“Am I dead?”

“No, it is not yet that time. The world is long overdue for a miracle for those who require proof of Him. You, Joanna, have been selected to be that miracle. You have been chosen to found a new faith, a new religion to bring billions of people of Earth into the Beacon of His Love.”

“Joanna? My name is Cindy? Joanna used to live here, but she moved in with her boyfriend about a month ago.”

Jujunezba’s face froze. “Oh,” the Angel said. “I’m not the one who is supposed to be omniscient. Sorry to bother you.” And was gone.

When I awoke on our second morning in France I was greeted by this amazing sunrise.

I must have looked like the architypal "mad English woman" as I ran out of our caravan in my nightdress, clutching my camera to get a few shots.

Luckily we were at the edge of the campsite and there were not many people around.

HFF everyone

I was kayaking Mono Lake in mid-winter. After several days of stormy weather, I awoke to a beautiful predawn morning. I walked around on the crisp, frozen snow and enjoyed the odd beauty around me. I wanted to get a sunrise photo as a way to end my trip although I wasn't in a very good position to see the rising sun. I set my tripod up and pointed my camera in the general direction of where I anticipated the sun to come up. The sun seemed to rise quickly and without even adjusting my tripod I noticed it had risen directly between two tufa tower formations, as if I had done it on purpose! Clickity click click click! (I need to rescan it at a higher resolution and resharpen it, it's not a very good scan).

So the Narcissus bulb sat mostly as a bulb during much of December, finally awoke with a few green shoots...well now, they stand over three feet tall on our kitchen table and this cluster of flowers (about half this size) crowns the top....

Feels like the stirrings of spring to me....

Thank you for stopping by, I appreciate your visit!...Pat...xo

Enjoy the weekend!

Cold, but not extremely so, and sunny today...what more could one ask in northern climes close-to-middle-of January!

I awoke on a frigid February morning to find my windows frosted over and a pair of rather winter weary looking eyes peering back at me!

The Snowstorm passed that night...I awoke to a vision of beauty...so rare...so ephemeral...it begged to be captured..so I left my groundhog burrow...camera in hand.. I ventured near the road...wary that I would become kill...so I looked to the East and then to the West...I was overwhelmed by God's Grace...a snow near perfect. So I spent all of 10 minutes clicking away. This is what I saw. A bush of snow.

After thinking about this photo being invited to Explore...I saw a discussion board concerning the selection process...I too, wonder about the logarithm that is used by the program to select worthy images. Though I feel it is an interesting image...the seemingly weightless snow supported by a delicate framework...there are flaws that cannot be overlooked...not that I am complaining. I thank everyone that has taken time to view, fave and comment on this photo.

When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.” He was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven.”

CN Tower, Toronto, Canada (2007)

I captured this in a September morning. The Sun passes through this spot only a few times each year. But it was really the haze that turned that few minutes into a magical moment.

I just awoke from a nap. Like, juuuust now. Still a tidge groggy.

I'm perplexed because, in my dream, Courtney Cox was trying to kill me. I remember frantically looking for help in my dream, stressing to someone, "Courtney Cox... you know, from Friends and from Melrose Place!!!"

And that's just seriously odd.

I awoke just in time to run out with a camera in hand and capture this colorful sunrise. It's unusual up here in Western Massachusetts to see skies like this, but every once in a while, you can be surprised.

For The Love of Trees...

Sunday morning we awoke to a thick heavy blanket of white dense fog. it rolled in overnight and got thicker with each passing hour.

Later that afternoon the fog was still very thick, so Karen and I headed up to Heart Lake Conservation area and hiked into the lake to take some more shots.

This shot was taken just beyond the entrance to the park. this lovely tree stood resolute against the encroaching shadows created by the fog, yet dramatically isolated it from the background... the tree really stood out and was beautifully framed in the midst of the mist

Dawg Alley - East Bay, CA

Grand Canyon stars from inside my tent. I awoke at 1:00am to see this amazing starry night sky through the opening of my tent; and I had to shoot this remembrance of our last night on the Colorado River. The back lighting from the stars literally made my tent glow!

Thanks to Western River Expeditions for a wonderful adventure, with great people, fantastic food, fun and unbelievably rich night skies!

EXIF: Canon 5DM3 • Rokinon 12mm f/2.8 fisheye • Composite blend: Sky - 20 sec, f/2.8, ISO 8000 • Foreground - 140 sec, f/4, ISO 6400. 8 exposure stacks of sky and 4 stacks of foreground to reduce noise. Processed in the Starry Landscape Stacker and PS.

I went to sleep an Elizabethan, my heart troubled by the news of The Queen's failing health, and I awoke a Carolean with a heart full of sadness at the passing of Her Majesty.

My mother, my partner and I have all grown up with no-one but The Queen as our Head of State and we have known no other. Her Majesty was a stable and guiding hand during times of upheaval and uncertainty. I feel privileged to have lived in the second great Elizabethan Age, and I feel I owe her a debt of gratitude for the life of service she gave to me and millions of others around the world.

Whilst none of us can say we truly knew her - that privilege bestowed upon her immediate family and close coterie of friends - I think The Queen would want us to respect her memory, and mourn as we see fit, but she would also want us to carry on as she and so many others did during the Second World War and to prosper in her memory, taking the lessons that she taught us to make the world a better place.

Therefore, I say God bless Her Majesty, and as we move into an uncertain new world, I add with stoicism and hope in my heart, long live The King.

God bless Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, (21st April 1926 - 8th September 2022), Queen of the United Kingdom from 6th of February 1952 until her death on the 8th of September 2022, reigning monarch of of 70 years and 214 days, longest reigning British monarch, second-longest recorded of any monarch of a sovereign country, monarch, teacher, daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, Defender of The Faith, instiller of hope around the world.

Awoke to a pleasant surprise today, snow!! Grabbed the camera and headed downtown to snag this shot. Usually there would be cars lining the streets, but being Sunday and all business closed, it was totally deserted...lucky me!!

I awoke one Saturday late morning. As the Coffee was brewing...trying to collect my thoughts, I happened to look out the back window down towards the pond. There by the shoreline were these weeds...shining bright under the rising Sun...so bright that they caught my attention. There had been a light Snow that night...maybe two inches. However, what I saw did not appear to be an accumulation of snow, but rather some type of crystalline formation growing from every stalk. It was stunning...so I grabbed the tripod and my 135mm lens...and went to capture what I could.

As the saying goes the Early Bird Gets the Worm...but early is not in my vocabulary...so as I was clicking away...the scene melted under the rising Sun before my very eyes...much like my dreams. Fireworks on display...glass shards embedded.

Red Fire Breathing Dragon Sky...

The forecast for today was thunder showers and overcast. when I awoke at 5.00 Am I knew it was going to be spectacular; there was a low ceiling of thick heavy clouds with small gaps of clear sky, the perfect recipe for a beautiful sunrise.

this fiery early September sunrise set the sky ablaze. it really looked as though the mooring sky had burst into flames.

The all too familiar waves of darkness crashed upon the shores.

The demons that once slumbered so peacefully awoke from their hibernation,

Hungry to feast upon insecurities and anxieties of the weak after their long slumber.

The peaceful waves that once rolled upon these shores were no more.

Instead the cold, harsh tidal waves replaced their presence,

Destroying all signs of hope and happiness.

The once colorful and joyous world turned grey and lifeless.

All attempts to stop this beast were in vain.

The darkness began to consume me,

Drowning me in everything I feared.

In desperation, I reached out for anything to pull me out.

But my hands met with nothing.

Nothing took me into its arms, caressing me like a mother finding her long lost son.

Suffocating in darkness, paralysed in its grasp,

I surrendered, exhausted from the fight.

Defeated, I accept the darkness.

The dark abyss slowly engulfed me, embodying what I had become,

Nothing.
