After falling asleep, I awoke to see reality slowly returning.
Wild grass mono with a subtle hint of color.
With 2 days of my fortnight off work left I awoke on Saturday to clear skies across the majority of Cumbria.
I joined forces with Dave McDigital and we decided to head for Shap and a potential three shot move.
First target was the 06.40 Daventry - Mossend "Tesco Express" and after a brisk walk from the summit I settled on this position to shoot "Brutus" & "Intrepid" as they lifted their train effortlessly up the long drag.
We awoke to three inches of snow this morning - the first of the season. Birds were fighting for room at the feeders, as four squirrels chased one another and loudly proclaimed that their staked-out area was the closest to the feeders. With overnight temperatures dipping into the low twenties - I do believe that winter is here to stay.
Since our woodshed is full - Doc left some wood in the round, for the tiniest creatures to seek refuge in this winter. You can see where they will be playing, in the middle ground of this photo.
I've been photographing wildlife lately, although not exclusively. One morning I awoke to fog and decided there could be wildlife photo ops out there waiting for me. But first... I just had to stop by the Frenchman River crossing at the edge of our village. The bridge is to my left, out of the frame. As you can see, the river is but a sliver, while the rough track directly in front of me leads to a dyke and a really nice local walk, with the river on one side and an irrigation ditch on the other. The village itself is to my right, out of the frame.
The dyke was tempting but I really wanted critters, so I just set up the tripod, made a few shots, got back in the car and kept driving. Almost all my recent outings have been in sunshine. Would the fog yield up anything good? Stay tuned...

Two mornings ago we awoke to freezing rain. The streets and sidewalks were slick and dangerous. But by noon the temperature was up above freezing, the thin layer of overnight ice had melted, and three of us did a late trip into the park.
While George rolled video, Madonna went off by herself for a while, and I took a moment from shooting landscapes to point my lens directly into the sun. Madonna is a hiker, at ease with solitude and with herself, and so even when she was working her way across some snowy terrain with steep sided gullies and disappeared from sight, I knew she'd be fine. Here she is back in the open, flat table land again, walking toward the low sun. It was an evening of breathtaking beauty.
I usually let new images sit for a bit while I figure out if they have any merit, but I really liked this one immediately, and it does seem appropriate for Christmas Eve - moving toward the light. After all, we are creatures of light.
Wishing everyone who celebrates it a Merry Christmas, and for those who do not, best wishes in the coming days, now that we've moved past the Winter Solstice and the light is returning.

Boy Scouts welcome the arrival of fellow scouts canoeing to a granite beach. Although this appears to be a black and white image, it was actually produced by the light reflecting off the lake. Sleeping out under the night sky we got to witness, for the first time, the formation of stars known as the Milky Way. When sunrise came, we awoke to a light frost on our sleeping bags. Priceless memories...

I AM NOT SAD
Written by
― Jonathan Safran Foer, Everything is Illuminated
“She awoke each morning with the desire to do right,
to be a good and meaningful person,
to be, as simple as it sounded and as impossible as it actually was, happy.
And during the course of each day
her heart would descend from her chest into her stomach.
By early afternoon she was overcome by the feeling that nothing was right,
or nothing was right for her, and by the desire to be alone.
By evening she was fulfilled: alone in the magnitude of her grief,
alone in her aimless guilt,
alone even in her loneliness.
I am not sad,
she would repeat to herself over and over,
I am not sad.
As if she might one day convince herself.
Or fool herself.
Or convince others--
the only thing worse than being sad is for others to know that you are sad.
I am not sad.
I am not sad.
Because her life had unlimited potential for happiness,
insofar as it was an empty white room.
She would fall asleep with her heart at the foot of her bed,
like some domesticated animal that was no part of her at all.
And each morning she would wake with it again in the cupboard of her rib cage,
having become a little heavier,
a little weaker,
but still pumping.
And by the mid afternoon she was again overcome with the desire to be somewhere else,
someone else,
someone else somewhere else.
I am not sad.”

Series of five. Awoke to thick fog this morning and chose the only area that did not clear until midday! Certainly the cliffs were interesting with the edge disappearing into the mist! Very eerie! I haven't seen a Whitethroat since last year, so nice to see this very obliging one this morning.
Yesterday we awoke to a very heavy fog cover -- so I jumped out of bed, grabbed my camera and off I went to the creek.
I awoke to a foggy, snowy morning. I can no longer see the lake and the city from my living room window.
Awoke early with the birds singing and the sun shining through the trees. Happy Tuesday all xx
Still busy - the days zip by! I am now the proud owner of an Apple iMac ... it is sitting beautifully on my desk waiting for me to have time to get to know it! We have a couple of rainy days coming up so I may be able to catch up. See you soon xx
Awoke to a red sky this morning,
rushed out up the hill and caught this.

The mercury has dropped and I awoke to frost on the roof of the truck...we all know what’s in store for use all soon enough. All though we’ll still have some enjoyable fall temps.
Never the less couldn’t help but think of Winter Owls and the return of Great Gray Owls.
The fact that the night sky on this date resembles that under which the Quendi first awoke in Arda , it was a day for meditation and reflection rather than of festival as such.Traditionally the story of The Awakening is read.
Awoke to snow on the ground this morning. Motivated enough to go out with my DSLR this morning the wrong direction for work so I could get some pics of the nearby park.
I liked the warmth and light of the buildings, and the cool blueness of the snow below.
Maybe not the best composition, but good enough! :)

We awoke to a foggy morning in the vally on Saturday. I can not remember when we had such a sight, if ever. This is a photo of my favorite field cloaked in the lovely mist.
Yesterday I awoke to snow, and I quickly went out and shot a few photo's. This morning I awoke to brilliant sunshine, and this afternoon we hit 65 F. I noticed that the thermometer's that were being hit directly by the sun, were hovering around eighty degrees. However - in one short month the sun will make it's turn and head south, and the days will begin to slowly shorten. Such is life north of the sixtieth parallel.
My little forest chair has a lot of growth on it now - so it has become a photo-op and not a place to sit and rest.

Yesterday i awoke to an unexpected snowstorm. the weather guys had predicted we wouldn't get any accumulations if any snow at all. Yep you guessed it; they were wrong again. we had about two inches of fresh snow.
I left the house at around 6;30 and went for my usual walk to the park, it was a balmy -18 with the wind chill and I shivered against the chill as the especially strong wind gusted to well over 70 KPH slapping any exposed skin with a bite that actually stung my cheeks and forehead. i wrapped my scarf around my face and pulled down my jackets hood to block the nasty cold wind. undeterred i plodded on. just as i got there the sun was breaking and spreading its warm beautiful light across the horizon. I actually got lost in the moment and for a second forgot how bitterly cold I was, I quickly snapped off several photos and braved on to find more. .

I awoke this morning around 4am and contemplated an early start on the road to head to Mangart (nearly two hours away) or head down to Lake Bled for a lovely sunrise. I choose Lake Bled and thank heavens that I did.
I arrived at 6.30am, forty minutes before sunrise and immediately set up my Canon EOS R camera to film 90 minutes of timelapse (it's the very first job that I do when arriving on location).
There was no mist on arriving and with cloud cover all around, I figured that this sunrise was going to be another bust but within minutes, the mist rolled in and abundance. It was everywhere and it at times, completely consumed the gorgeous church on the island of Lake Bled.
I stood for two hours being completely mesmerised at what I was seeing. Sure, there was no pre-sunrise colour in the sky as such, but the mist was so ethereal and atmospheric, that I did not care.
Watch my timelapse and experience what I saw this morning. Enjoy. Slovenia is surprising me more and more with each passing day :D

I awoke with a spring in my step this morning to see this brilliant sunshine in Toronto! Feels like -10 C outside but glorious sunshine makes me happy. Tomorrow we change our clocks, springing forward by one hour.
HWW! Awoke to a thin veneer of snow frosting the roofs of these townhomes. It is -1 C, feeling like -13 C now.
Awoke to a robust 35 degrees here along the Florida panhandle this morning and decided to venture over to the seashore to watch the sunrise. While walking around I found this nice little scene that belied the somewhat cold temperatures of the morning.
The next morning I awoke, well rested beneath the warm, embracing pines. The air was crisp and cool . The willows and blueberry bushes that clung to the banks of the nearby creek were embroidered with frost, yet the grasses encircling the small pond were free of ice. Soon the very tips of Mt. Davis began to glow a vibrant pink in the first rays of the young, new born sun.
We awoke early to start the long drive home, and this sight greeted me across the Loch. I only had a few minutes to grab a few quick shots, very frustrating!
Awoke from a particularly vivid dream at about 6 this morning to find another one happening for real outside. I had my fisheye lens still on the camera and took this, still bleary eyed without having any time to alter any camera settings, so its not perfect. Within moments its had gone.
Awoke to one of the coldest mornings of the winter in our area, -20C ( -4 F ) and with the rising sun came the fog. It is said, “a winter’s fog will freeze a dog” .
There are several of these facilities in the area, this one being close by. I've had my eye on them for years knowing I should visit. A recent post though from a Flickr friend is what finally moved me to act. Her image that finally made me realize I needed to visit these sites can be found here.....
I awoke this morning to a new visitor in the yard. The strikingly streaked Savannah Sparrow, a welcome sight and Spring sparrow species number four. I was lucky enough to have all four species present this morning. The Song Sparrows rattling songs rang out before dawn, The Chipping and White-throated Sparrows foraged in and around the garden bed and a total of three Savannah Sparrows joined them on this fine dreary day. To photograph this ground feeding bird I had to do what I do all too frequently nowadays. Lay on the walkway along the yard and wait. He came close on a few occasions but nowhere clear enough to make a pleasing image. It was quite awhile before he wondered through a clear patch and I was able to get this mostly unobstructed view at his head.
i awoke to this art on my window and these mary oliver words in my head:
"today i'm flying low and i'm
not saying a word.
i'm letting all the voodoos of ambition sleep.
the world goes on as it must,
the bees in the garden rumbling a little,
the fish leaping, the gnats getting eaten.
and so forth.
but i'm taking the day off.
quiet as a feather.
i hardly move though really i'm traveling
a terrific distance.
stillness. one of the doors
into the temple."

As I awoke this evening with the smell of wood smoke clinging
Like a gentle cobweb hanging upon a painted tepee
Oh I went to see my chieftain with my warlance and my woman
For he told us that the yellow moon would very soon be leaving
This I cant believe I said, I cant believe our warlords dead
Oh he would not leave the chosen ones to the buzzards and the soldiers guns
Oh great father of the iroquois ever since I was young
Ive read the writing of the smoke and breast fed on the sound of drums
Ive learned to hurl the tomahawk and ride a painted pony wild
To run the gauntlet of the sioux, to make a chieftains daughter mine
And now you ask that I should watch
The red mans race be slowly crushed
What kind of words are these to hear
From yellow dog whom white man fears
I take only what is mine lord, my pony, my squaw, and my child
I cant stay to see you die along with my tribes pride
I go to search for the yellow moon and the fathers of our sons
Where the red sun sinks in the hills of gold and the healing waters run
Trampling down the prairie rose leaving hoof tracks in the sand
Those who wish to follow me I welcome with my hands
I heard from passing renegades geronimo was dead
Hed been laying down his weapons when they filled him full of lead
Now there seems no reason why I should carry on
In this land that once was my land I cant find a home
Its lonely and its quiet and the horse soldiers are coming
And I think its time I strung my bow and ceased my senseless running
For soon Ill find the yellow moon along with my loved ones
Where the buffalos graze in clover fields without the sound of guns
And the red sun sinks at last into the hills of gold
And peace to this young warrior comes with a bullet hole

I awoke around 4:30 am on our first morning in the cottage to a very red light filtering round the curtains and ventured out onto the A838 in front of the house in my PJs.
I've posted this before (though not in a 16x9 crop) but I thought I could improve both detail and noise with DxO Photolab's DeepPrime XD noise reduction. Takes a while on my ancient PC but the difference in detail is startling.
High Sierra Wanderings August 2020
Part 1
About ten years ago I lost contact with a friend of mine when I upgraded from an old flip phone to a new iPhone. I lost his number and he some how lost mine. In June of this year, 2020, I awoke one morning to find an abnormally long voice mail in my in box. I immediately recognized his voice, so I called him back as soon as I could. Me and Hester (we had only ever called each other by last names) had met while in the US Air Force when we were both at tech training on Navy Base Port Hueneme, though neither of us are in the service any more. During our conversation he asked me what I was up to so I told him about an upcoming backpacking trip I had planed for late August. He said it sounded like fun and asked if he could join me. Over the rest of June and throughout July and August we went over gear, most of which he had to buy, and food. As the date of the trip approached things began to quicken, buying what gear hadn't been gotten yet, buying the food , getting the permits, check and double check. He had done a few single night trips but nothing of the magnitude that I had planned, and because I had been planning it since the beginning of the year I wasn't about to change my plans.
Back in 2016 I did a 40 day, 200 plus mile, solo cross country backpacking trip through the High Sierra. On day four of that trip I saw a beautiful scene in full sunlight flic.kr/p/LZZm1h that I wanted to photograph at sunrise so the peak would be aflame in the alpine glow, but I couldn't because on this particular day I was hiking with two others over my first cross country pass and couldn't stop. This trip was planned so I could get that exact shot.
Finally the day arrived, and I drove 300 miles from my home by the sea to the Sierras, he drove over 1000 miles from Colorado. Since the campground at the trailhead was at 10,000 ft and I was coming from sea level I decided I would spend the first night in my car on the side of Horseshoe Meadows Road at 7000 ft where I had a spectacular view of the Owens Valley and the dry lake of the same name. The White Mountains rising on the far side of the valley separating it from Death Valley. I arrived in late afternoon and was greeted by a magnificent thunderstorm. Clouds adorn the sky and big drops of rain pelted down; lightning split the sky and thunder shook the mountainside. Along the valley floor the shadows of the storm clouds danced with the sun beams. The storm that had greeted me eventually subsided and I took a nap in my car. I was soon awoken by more rain drumming on the windshield and thunder once again echoing. The day grew old and in sunset the second storm faded. I watched the lights of Lone Pine flicker on, mirroring the stars above and Highway 395 became a steady stream of headlights in the darkness.
Hester arrived around 11:30 and before going to sleep in our cars we caught up on things and happenings.
