After a stormy night on the coast, we awoke to a gorgeous pink and purple sunrise. We were staying the night In Yachats, near Smelt Sands recreation area. We had come over to watch the King tides. This is still a good four hours before the tides hit their peak.
a little gift for all of us from Mother Nature :)
We had snow then freezing rain during the night. I awoke to the sound of the tiny pellets hitting the window. It has stopped now, but there is a fine mist of rain still. All flights have been cancelled on some airlines and also on the ferries, but I'm sure that those statuses change from hour to hour. I'm sure glad we are staying home, have power, and our pipes haven't frozen.
I also have a yard full of birds, mostly varied thrushes ! Normally I might see one or two, but I'm pretty sure there are at least two dozen, very vocal and bossy with each other and the small juncos, sparrows and chickadees. I have been putting food out every hour for them to help them stay warm. Our hummingbird feeders with their heat lamps are also a hit with our hummers. I hope y'all are doing good and will maybe even enjoy Christmas Day, I know many people who just endure it.

When I awoke the other morning the sunrise had the most wonderful warm glow - I grabbed the camera and took a few shots - this is one of them.
I like the tones as they remind me of chocolately colours!
Winter in California is the wet season. This day was no exception. We awoke early, after a cold, rainy night, hoping to catch a sunrise before the forecast rains for the day.
From Black Butte, we drove northeast along the Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway until we reached a logging and fire trail up Herd Peak. When we reached the end of the navigable road we stopped, just prior to first light. As sunrise occurred, it was a mixture of intense sunlight, breaking through the holes in the clouds, with gusty winds separating the clouds above from the fog burning off around the base of Mt. Shasta, which created a haze permeating the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. An hour later, the mountain was completely shrouded in thick clouds, no longer visible and heavy rain fell throughout the day.
For a few brief moments, the sun light the clouds above Shasta on fire, creating colors befitting a volcano of this mountain's stature. Sometimes you just have to be thankful for the moments you get and move on to the next opportunity.

My happy place...Big Bear Lake, CA in the spring.I shot this from across the lake when I awoke this morning. Soon there will be boats and skiers but for now nothing but peace and quiet.

Lynx Manor at sunrise was a magical place to be as the fog rose from lightly misted ground and the lightning bugs found their way home. The lynx's always awoke as the stars faded into the peach skies and reflected on the water around them.

They say it's 2312 and this is earth. I awoke 5 years ago in an alley with no memory and some horrible dreams. What I do know is
1. I am a Bio, part biological human and part machine and my tech is really nice and very expensive.
2. I have no memory of who I am or how I came to be this way.
3. How badly I am going to hurt the ones who did this, because what I do know... I was not supposed to wake up.
My name is Biohazard and I'm awake.

Now let's roll the clock forward several hours as the sun rises behind our backs, rises high up in the sky, and starts its afternoon descend towards the west. The quiet lake awoke and waves started crashing on the beach and against the cliffs with force. The peaceful and quiet mood of the daybreak was traded for a more bright and intense experience. Can you feel the sun piercing your eyes, photograph or not?

We awoke to RAIN!!! I am feeling quite chilly - but a sense of relief....We can almost see the grass growing again, and the little green patches on the lawn are getting bigger as we watch!
My camera and I awoke early to watch the sunrise over the mountains. It was a very romantic valentines day. (Little does she know I'm dreaming of another camera these days).

We awoke early in the AM of Beecherfest Friday to find that Christmas had come early in Wisconsin, and there were several prizes to be had in the winter wonderland before the festivities. Our second slay of the day looks mighty fine rounding the bend at Willow Creek Rd. in the form of the Wizzer’s T004, knocking down approaches on the Waukesha sub in good snowfall as it makes it’s long zig zag for Chicago.
Major creds to Matt-Bro for plopping me in front of all the trains at the good spots on this day.
It had rained the night before, so despite having stopped on our travels from San Diego to specifically hike Kanarra Falls, my wife and I awoke to an overcast morning and were hesitant to return to the start point. We waited much later than we planned, with a long drive ahead of us for the day, but finally decided to attempt the hike at 9 AM.
I am so glad we did. Had we been there earlier, this shot would have been even better, and as it was, this is barely what I saw as I tried to put the tripod together and in place before snapping off the images. There was still quite a bit of mist from the morning's cool waters hanging in this portion of the slot canyon and as we turned the corner, the single ray of sunlight illuminating that mist was a "Wow" moment. I got this one shot, before it was too warm, the mist had evaporated completely, and the sun proceeded to move past this angle.
That's how it goes sometimes...
Congrats on Explore!

I awoke Saturday morning to the news of a K677 being crewed out of Curtis Bay, heading westward. I headed them off here at Patapsco Avenue as they came ofd the flyover. The crew, knowing better, played hard to get, and beat me to every single spot down the Capital Subdivision, while giving me the “goteem” hand gesture.

After reaching 10F (-15C) the night before, I awoke yesterday surprised to find ice extending about 50 yards (or meters) out into the lake, magically appearing overnight. I've never witnessed such a sudden and extensive arrival, "gradual" far more definitive for this annual icing of the lake. I concluded that conditions must have been perfect to have created such an event...one which will have limited duration this time as temps rise back above freezing for the next few day, the encroachment retreating even now. But the ice is without concern, knowing that in time it will win this seasonal battle as it always does. Perhaps it was just "testing the waters." ;-))
That day I awoke very early and I drove forty kilometers to Kalloni wetlands to meet with the flamingos in the morning light. The weather was almost calm -but not as calm as I expected - in order to capture reflections, as I had done in previous efforts. Life in the wetlands begins very early in the morning, so the result was not dissapointing at all.
Many thanks for viewing.
Awoke this morning to some mist across Ullswater so, I grabbed my gear, jumped in the car and explored what image opportunities there were along the west shore. I was pleased to have grabbed a few shots and this is the first of them.

This morning we awoke to a thick heavy blanket of white dense fog. it rolled in overnight and got thicker with each passing hour.
At the crack of dawn i was up and out, even before the sunrise to got a few shots. i figured the fog would dissipate by seven or so. so id best get as many as i could before it burned off.
this shot is at the back of the local park.

When I awoke I noticed my neighbor was running their sprinklers this morning and I knew I wanted the misty magic in my image somehow. I had to patiently wait until the sun and water cooperated but the wind kept knocking over my bottle. I am sure it was funny to watch me sitting in the sprinklers getting soaked and waiting, moving, recomposing, hitching up my pants, picking up my bottle, pacing. Though not technically perfect in any way I really love so much about it I had to keep it.
I awoke this first day of the year and desired to create art from some throw away shots. I've learned so much over the last several months, but this piece pushed me to new edges.
Shooting Fog..
In med October last year, early in the morning we awoke to a dense fog that had descended upon Brampton. It was thick and the sun was shining but barely able to get through the soupy haze.
We spent the better part of the morning taking shots. I truly love foggy misty mornings. There is just something that cannot be explained; it is a feeling of absolute stillness, it is a peace that transcends a normal morning. everything is shrouded in the thick air that is fog the and somehow the world seems quitter than it normally is. It is a great time for reflection and photography.

"The infant baby of Mr. and Mrs. Otis Leonard died last night. When they retired in the evening the baby was seemingly feeling well, but when they awoke in the morning they discovered that the little life had expired. It will be buried this afternoon, the Rev. W. H. Harris officiating."
-Washington State Journal and Adams County News, Thursday, February 13, 1907
What a horrible thing to experience. Vera was Dora and Otis' seventh child out of eleven. She is also the only one to die young. The rest made it well into adulthood, and most very long after.
I spent a good deal of time setting up this shot, ending up lying on my stomach. This is often the case. I shoot low. If you can get through a day of shooting and not have to do laundry, you're not doing something right.
Throw yourself into your work. Sometimes literally.
Incidentally, Otis' brother Henry and his wife Ida had a daughter named Vera as well. She died on the same day she was born two years before. Both are buried in the same ceetery.

On the morning of our second day of trekking, I awoke when it was still dark at Campo Serón, right on the western shore of the Rio Paine. As I waited and looked east, the wind-sculpted clouds began to glow intensely. The countryside reminded me a good deal of Montana, where I lived for a couple summers on the Bitterroot River. Except here the plants were all strange, the river had no fish due to the extraordinary load of glacial flour, and there were Austral Parakeets flying around.

Yesterday morning I awoke to a winter wonderland.
It had snowed all night, but stopped around 8am.
more is expected on Friday.

"When the words weigh heavy on the heart
I am lost and led only by the stars
Cage me like an animal
A crown with gems and gold
Eat me like a cannibal
Chase the neon throne
Breathe in, breathe out
Let the human in
Breathe in, breathe out
And let it in
Plants awoke and they slowly grow
Beneath the skin"

i awoke to the chilly fingers icy cold around the throat of my world
now would come the theater of survival for my outdoor friends
cat's huddled in corners, birds sitting still flowers asleep in their seeds
tomorrow may bring snow, who knows.
but today just glimmers and slivers of color dot the sky and paint the ground
welcome father winter, welcome mother cold we await your first blankets of white.

"And a whisper awoke on the wilderness, sighing,
Like the voice of the heroes who battled in vain,

But to bring back the old life that comes not again.” A. Lang
Not far from Inverness, the 18th Century farmhouse still stands, a silent witness to the tragic battle of 1746 where 2000 Highlanders lost their lives in a desperate bid for their land and freedom. Those who survived were hunted down and executed. This marked the end of the Jacobite cause and with it an old way of life. The ruthless "highland clearances" (the expulsion of the Gaels) which followed led many Scots to emigrate from Scotland to the new world.

Autumn lingers on, here in Alaska. I awoke to 40 F. degree's this morning, with a steady rain falling. The beautiful colored leaves are now on the ground, and the snow is slowly creeping down the mountains. When Doc. Doolittle (my hubby) goes out to fill the feeders each morning - he is now greeted by an ever larger flock of camp robbers (otherwise known as "grey jays") eager for their morning breakfast. They will grow in numbers as it gets closer to winter - and soon will be fighting each other for the breakfast scraps.
"The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, and wiser people so full of doubts."
Bertrand Russell
Awoke this morning to an eerie white coating upon the lawn, trees and rooftops. Overnight lows dipped into the upper 20s setting up widespread frost...aptly named the 'killing' frost. As a kid I imagined plants withering, turning black and dying in an instant when adults spoke of the killing frost. In reality, everything looks just fine the morning after. Death comes, but it comes slowly. Vigorous plants can hand on for a while, depending on what parts were exposed to the frost, and how long it lasted. More tender varieties begin to wither even by afternoon. Sometimes the killing frost is more symbolic than anything. The growing season is officially over. What plants weren't killed now will be soon enough while the perennials will enter dormant stage. It's bright and sunny now, and well above freezing. But the frost is lurking right around the corner, prepared to slip back in under the cover of night. Black death for annuals, not as abrupt as my childhood vision, but just as certain.
Model Jill will be delighted I'm sure to have her photo associated with this post. I did this to her a few seasons ago in a similar pose. The Victorian era Gothic house presented the perfect backdrop. Jill stood in full silhouette, yet there's so much detail, real and implied, in those shapes. Somewhere between black Dahlia and widows walk. A wonderful visual metaphor for the killing frost.
.- Awoke, and it was a dream .... and vanished ... nothingness ... ... it faded, disappeared .... and wept ......
Because just ... it was just a dream .......

Porque sólo..., tan sólo era un sueño.....
