Colours of Autumn - my favourite time of the year has come around again and some of the colours of autumn are starting to appear.

SCOUT: “Paddy! Oh Paddy!” *Distraught.*

PADDY: “What is it Scout? You sound upset!” *Concerned.*

SCOUT: “Oh I am, Paddy! Just look!” *Points paw to window.*

PADDY: *Looks to where Scout is pointing.* “It’s raining!”

SCOUT: “Exactly Paddy!”

PADDY: “Well, a bit of rain isn’t a bad thing, Scout.”

SCOUT: “Yes it is, Paddy! The rain is bad!” *Nods head seriously.*

PADDY: “Oh what nonsense, Scout!” *Shakes head.* “The rain is good. It’s good for the flowers and the grass and the trees. It gives them a much needed drink! It hasn’t rained a great deal lately and we need the rain.”

SCOUT: “Noooo Paddy!” *Stomps paw.* “The rain is bad!”

PADDY: “What Scout? You love the flowers and the grass and the trees. Don’t you want them to be happy?”

SCOUT: “Well, of course I do, Paddy. It’s just… it’s just…”

PADDY: “It’s just what, Scout?”

SCOUT: “It’s just that, well it’s my birthday on Thursday, and… and… and…” *Tears well in eyes.*

PADDY: “And what, Scout?”

SCOUT: “Well, Daddy is organising a birthday party for me with a chocolate cake with pink cream cheese icing, and I don’t want my party to be spoiled by the bad, bad rain!” *Starts crying.* “I wanted to have a nice sunny day, and… and…” *Cries.* “And so that we could have the party on the lawn, and… and…” *Sniffles.* And then we could play my most favouritest game in the whole wide world EVER!” *Cries more.* “Hide-and-seek in the garden.”

PADDY: *Opens arms and gives Scout a big little bear hug.* “There, there, Scout.”

SCOUT: *Still crying.* “I wanted it to be a perfect day! Now the bad rain is spoiling it!”

PADDY: *Comforts Scout.* “There, there, Scout. Tell me,” *Holds Scout at paw’s length.* “What day is it today?”

SCOUT: *Stops crying.* “Why it’s… it’s Monday, Paddy.” *Sniffles.* “Why?”

PADDY: “Well, if today is Monday, and your birthday is Thursday, why that is three whole days for the rain to come before we reach Thursday. I’m sure it will be sunny by then!”

SCOUT: “Wipes snuffly muzzle with paw.* “Do… do you really think so… Paddy?”

PADDY: “I do, Scout.” *Nods enthusiastically.* “And just think how beautiful and fresh the garden will be for your birthday! The flowers will be blooming, and the grass will be soft beneath your paws, and there may even be some new growth on the trees and bushes that make perfect hiding places.”

SCOUT: *Sniffs.* “Really… Paddy?”

PADDY: “Yes I do, Scout.” *Nods again.* “And even if it does rain on Thursday, it will still be your birthday, and you will still get a special chocolate cake with pink cream cheese icing from Daddy.”

SCOUT: “But what about the party, Paddy?”

PADDY: “Well, if it rains, I’m sure we could have a picnic party inside in the sunroom. We can set up on the carpet. There is plenty of room for everybear! And you know all the best hiding places in the house, better than anybear.”

SCOUT: “That is true.*

PADDY: “So we can still play hide-and-seek.”

SCOUT: “Oh!” *Wipes eyes with paws.* “I didn’t thin k about it like that, Paddy.”

PADDY: “So let it rain, and let the flowers and grass and trees have their drink and be happy, and you and everybear will be happy whether your birthday party is inside or outside!”

SCOUT: “Oh thank you, Paddy! You are soooo clever!” *Sniffs.* “Maybe the rain isn’t such bad rain after all.”

PADDY: “No, this is good rain, Scout. The flowers and grass and trees need a drink very badly.”

SCOUT: “You know what, Paddy?”

PADDY: “What Scout?”

SCOUT: “Now I don’t feel bad any more! My birthday party is saved!” *Gives Paddy a big little bear hug.* “Thank you Paddy! I love you very, VERY much!”

PADDY: “Well, that’s good Scout, because I love you too!”

Scout doesn't actually know when his first birthday was, but as bears are entitled to two birthdays every year, he has decided that his other birthday will be the day he came to live forever with Paddy and me, which was the 27th of March! So the 27th of March it is! I hope you can join us on Thursday. It is sure to be a fun party, whether inside or out, with lots of singing, birthday cake and bear party games to enjoy.

My Paddington Bear came to live with me in London when I was two years old (many, many years ago). He was hand made by my Great Aunt and he has a chocolate coloured felt hat, the brim of which had to be pinned up by a safety pin to stop it getting in his eyes. The collar of his mackintosh is made of the same felt. He wears wellington boots made from the same red leather used to make the toggles on his mackintosh.

He has travelled with me across the world and he and I have had many adventures together over the years. He is a very precious member of my small family.

Scout was a gift to Paddy from my friend. He is a Fair Trade Bear hand knitted in Africa. His name comes from the shop my friend found him in: Scout House. He tells me that life was very different where he came from, and Paddy is helping introduce him to many new experiences. Scout catches on quickly, and has proven to be a cheeky, but very lovable member of our closely knit family.

Remembered this beautiful song of The Cinematic Orchestra. Enjoy.

The harvest-time is going on.

SCOUT: “Which one to do you want, Rosie?”

ROSIE: “Hhhmmm…” *Ponders.* “I think the hen, Scout. She has a pretty coloured apron.”

SCOUT: “Excellent, you can have the hen basket then. What about you Bogart?”

BOGART: “Well, which one do you want, Scout?”

SCOUT: “Well, I really like the duckie. He reminds me of Duckie!” *Giggles.*

BOGART: “Then you should have the duck. I’m happy to have the bunny rabbit.”

SCOUT: “Oh goodie! Thank you, Bogart! That’s settled then!”

PADDY: “Hullo you three!”

SCOUT, BOGART and ROSIE: “Hullo Paddy!”

PADDY: “What are you doing out here?”

BOGART: “We are picking Easter baskets, Paddy.”

ROSIE: “Scout found these three pretty baskets in one of Daddy’s cupboards, so he offered one to me and one to Bogart!”

SCOUT: “That’s right, Paddy! I’m having the cute yellow duckie one!”

ROSIE: “And I’m having the pretty white hen one.”

BOGART: “And I’m having the one with the funny Easter Bunny on it.”

SCOUT: “I’d offer you one, Paddy, but I only found three baskets. I’m sorry.”

PADDY: “Oh that’s alright, Scout. I don’t mind.” *Smiles.* “I’ll find my own basket on Easter Sunday. But why are you picking Easter baskets now?”

ROSIE: “Well, Easter is on its way, Paddy!”

BOGART: “In fact, it is almost here, Paddy! Not too many sleeps to go now!”

SCOUT: “And there is nothing wrong with getting prepared for the arrival of the Easter Bunny, Paddy!”

PADDY: “Well, that is true, Scout, Rosie and Bogart.”

ROSIE: “And we know that the Easter Bunny is very generous, Paddy.”

PADDY: “That is also true, Rosie.”

BOGART: “And we’re going to need something to store the Easter eggs we receive from the Easter Bunny in, Paddy.”

PADDY: “That’s very practical, Bogart.”

SCOUT: “Hopefully the Easter Bunny will see us getting ready and bring us Easter eggs early this year, Paddy!”

PADDY: “I don’t think that’s quite how it works, Scout.”

SCOUT: “Well, you never know, Paddy! Anything is worth a try!”

ROSIE, SCOUT and BOGART: “Grumbly tummies, Paddy! Grumbly tummies!” *Rub tummies vigorously.*

BOGART: “Come on everybear! Let’s go put our baskets on the dining room table in readiness for Easter, and then we can play hide-and-seek! It’s such a lovely day today!”

ROSIE: “Oh that’s a good idea, Bogart!”

SCOUT: “Come and play hide-and-seek with us, Paddy!”

PADDY: “Now that sounds like fun!”

The baskets that Scout, Rosie and Bogart are sharing are vintage 1950s thick paper examples which I acquired not long after Easter 2024. The body of the basket is all one piece that is folded together and slipped through cuts at the side. The handle is a separate piece that fits through slits at either end. I love their cute printed characters!

Rosie is Scout's cousin, because like Scout, she is a free trade knitted bear from Africa. She was made in Kenya by one of the Kenana Knitters, Martha Wanjira. She is made from home spun and dyed wool. She was a gift to me from two very dear friends, including the one who gave Scout to Paddy.

ROSIE: “Scout! Scout!”

SCOUT: “What is it, Rosie?”

ROSIE: “There is faerie dust in the air, Scout! You know what that means, don’t you?”

SCOUT: “Someone from Mummy Marian’s is coming through the magic portal! Quick, let’s go see who it is! Hopefully it is mijn beste vriend and your prins Peter!”

ROSIE: “Oh I do hope so, Scout! Let’s run!”

SCOUT and ROSIE: *Run to the magic portal hidden in Daddy Jesse’s garden.*

PETER: “Oh! Mijn allerliefste Prinses Rosie! My heart goes flippity-flop when I see you! It’s so good to see you!” *Gives Rosie a soft, snuffly kiss.*

ROSIE: “Oh mijn prins Peter! You make my heart go flippity flop too! You are so handsome!” *Gives Peter a soft, snuffly kiss.*

SCOUT: “Hullo mijn allerbeste vriend Peter!”

PETER: “Oh! It is equally as good to see you too, mijn allerbeste vriend Scout!” *Gives Scout a snuffly kiss.* “You and Rosie both look so lovely!”

ROSIE: “Oh we are still wearing our King’s Day orange crowns that Daddy made for us, and I am wearing an orange tutu!” *Spins around.* “Don’t you think I look pretty mijn prins?”

PETER: “Mijn allerliefste Prinses Rosie! You look wonderful!”

SCOUT: “I’m soooo excited you are here!” *Trembles.* “Shall we play hide-and-seek, or would you prefer to have some tea and treats first?”

PETER: “Well, I think we need to have tea first, because I haven’t come alone. I have brought somebear who wishes to see mijn allerliefste Prinses Rosie! Someone who hasn’t been here before.”

ROSIE: “Somebear who wishes to see me, mijn prins?”

SCOUT: “Who hasn’t been here before, mijn beste vriend?”

PETER: “That’s right!”

ROSIE and SCOUT: “Who?”

*Leaves rustle and quiver as the air fills with faerie dust.*

LIANA: “Hullo Rosie!” *Steps out from amongst the leaves out of the magic portal.*

ROSIE: *Rubs eyes with paws.* “Liana! Princess Liana! Is that you?”

LIANA: “Yes! Yes it’s me, dear Rosie! I’ve come to visit you!”

ROSIE and LIANA: *Hug one another.*

SCOUT: *Whispering.* “Pst! Peter mijn beste vriend. Who is this beautiful bear in the pretty pink dress?”

SCOUT: *Whispers back.* “She says she is Princess Liana. She says she comes from a land far away.”

SCOUT: “Oooohhh!”

ROSIE: “Liana, allow me to introduce my cousin, Scout. Scout, this is Princess Liana!”

SCOUT: “How do you do, Princess Liana!”

LIANA: “How do you do. Are you a princess too, Scout? I see you and my friend Rosie are wearing crowns and pretty gowns.”

SCOUT: “Oh no, Princess Liana! I am a little boy bear. I just like wearing tutus and dresses, and our Daddy made us these paper crowns for King’s Day so we could celebrate with mijn beste vriend Peter, who is also Rosie’s prins, whom you have obviously already met.”

LIANA: “Yes, Peter has been very helpful! I was looking for Rosie, and Fairy Mum said I had to go through the portal in Mummy Marian’s garden, but I couldn’t find the portal, and then whilst I was looking for it, I met Peter!”

PETER: “That’s right! I said that I am Prince Peter and that Rosie is my Princess and...and...she\'s the sweetest princess I\'ve ever seen, because you are, mijn allerliefste Prinses Rosie! And...and...I said I know where the magic portal is!”

LIANA: “And I was scared to use it, so dear Peter offered to hold my paw and bring me here, so I could see you, Rosie!”

ROSIE: “And here we are!”

SCOUT: “Welcome Princess Liana!”

LIANA: “Since you are Rosie’s cousin, you may just call me, Liana, Scout.”

SCOUT: “Oh thank you, Liana.”

ROSIE: “So, would you like to play hide-and-seek, or would you like some tea, dear Liana?”

LIANA: “Well, I’ve actually come because I want to ask you a very important question, Rosie.”

ROSIE: “Well, in that case, we should have some tea first, dear Liana. Important questions are always best asked over tea. We have some left-over Easter Eggs too which we can enjoy!”

PETER: “Oh that sounds fantastic! I have a very grumbly tummy, mijn allerliefste Prinses Rosie!”

LIANA: “I have been travelling so long from a land far away, that I have a grumbly tummy too!”

ROSIE: “Then come along, both of you. We will get Daddy to make us some lovey tea, won’t we Scout?”

SCOUT: “Oh yes we will, Rosie! Come along mijn beste vriend and Liana!”

Well here is something new we didn\'t know about Rosie! She is friends with a real princess, from a land far away! You can see Liana searching for the magic portal in Mummy Marian\'s garden when she came across Peter here: or in the first comment below. Liana is a limited edition Steiff "The Princess and the Frog" bear, inspired by the classic faerie tale by the Brothers Grimm. She is made of wool plush, resplendent in a glittering tulle skirt and wearing just a hint of make-up.

She was a gift to Mummy Marian from her daughter!

My bears Paddy and Scout have made very good friends with two bears in Holland called Peter and Oleg (www.flickr.com/photos/40262251@N03/galleries/721577154558... and www.flickr.com/photos/40262251@N03/galleries/721577233464...) and their MummyMarian Kloon (on and off). Peter and Scout are very similar and have become best friends. Peter loves Rosie and Rosie loves Peter, so they have become prince and princess to one another.

Scout was a gift to Paddy from my friend. He is a Fair Trade Bear hand knitted in Africa. His name comes from the shop my friend found him in: Scout House. He tells me that life was very different where he came from, and Paddy is helping introduce him to many new experiences. Thank you to Marian Kloon (on and off) for the use of her photos of Peter and Liana in my photo montage.

ROSIE: "Oh my dear friend Liana! How happy I am to see you again!"

LIANA: "I am also so happy to see you again too my dear friend Rosie! I see that you are now a princess, just like me, and that you have found the prince of your dreams! I am so happy for you!"

ROSIE: "Oh yes, mijn prins Peter is soooo wonderful! I love him very much!"

LIANA: "Yes, I can see why you do! Prince Peter is so nice. He brought me here to visit you."

ROSIE: "Have you found your prince yet Liana? A princess as regal and beautiful as you should have a prince by her side."

LIANA: *Sighs deeply.* "Oh Rosie! For that I need your wise and sage advice my dear friend!"

ROSIE: "Oh I am always here to help you, dear Liana. Tell me what is troubling you? Don't tell me that you have fallen for a wicked prince!"

LIANA: "No, no, Rosie! Nothing like that. According to the faerie tale, I should kiss a frog and then he will, turn into a handsome prince. Just recently, a frog sat on a well next to me, and asked me to kiss him. But... I... I didn't want to. He was all wet and cold! Besides, I don't kiss strangers. I don't know what to do now. What should I do, dear Rosie? Should I kiss the frog, even if he is slimy and I don't know him? What is your advice, my dear friend? I also want to have a prince so badly, like you do!"

ROSIE: "Oh dear! I understand why you you don't want to just go around kissing starnge frongs that you haven't even properly been introduced to. Not to mention that, as you say, they are slimy and cold!" *Shivers.* "Yes! I can see why this is is such a big problem. I also want you to find your prince, dear Liana."

LIANA: "So, what do I do, dear Rosie?"

ROSIE: "Let's have a cup of tea first my dearest Liana. Tea always makes even the worst situations better. Daddy makes the best problem solving tea. I'm also sharing some of my very special pink Easter Eggs that the Easter Bunny left for me. Help yourself Liana! They are delicious melt-in-the-mouth chocolate inside!"

LIANA: "Oh thank you, dear Rosie!"

ROSIE and LIANA: *Sip tea and eat chocolate Easter Eggs.*

LIANA: "Daddy's tea is delicious, dear Rosie, but..." *Ponders.* "I don't feel any clearer about my problem."

ROSIE: "Oh I have found daddy's tea to be very helpful for me! I think I have come up with a solution, Liana!"

LIANA: "You have, Rosie?"

ROSIE: "I have!"

LIANA: "What do you suggest then, dear Rosie?"

ROSIE: "Well, I know you don't want to kiss that frog because he is a stranger. But maybe, once you have spoken to him, and maybe spent some time together, he won't be a stranger any more. You might also find that you have some things in common, which helps if he is telling the truth and really is a prince in disguise! Mijn prins Peter and I have soooo much in common!"

LIANA: "Hhhmmm..." *Ponders.* "That makes sense. That is very wise, dear Rosie. But... but that doesn't solve the fact that the frog looks so cold and slimy!"

ROSIE: "Well, I thought about that too. Looks can be deceiving sometimes, Liana. Maybe, if you just stroke his back once or twice with your paw. Have a bag with some nice fragrant soap in your favourite scent and your toothbrush and some toothpaste near to paw when you do though."

LIANA: "Why, dear Rosie? Why do I need the soap and my toothbrush and some toothpaste?"

ROSIE: "Well, if you stroke the frog and he is soft and warm, that's a very good sign. However, if he isn't, you can quickly wash your paw in the well and wash off his cold slime. If the frog is soft and warm, that probably means that he is a prince under enchantment, as frogs are usually cold and slimy. If he is warm and soft, you could then give him a quick kiss. If he is a prince under enchantment, he will immediately turn into a prince and you can live happily ever after!"

LIANA: "And if he doesn't?"

ROSIE: :You can use the toothpaste on your toothbrush to wash away the frog taste from your mouth."

LIANA: "Oh what a great idea, dear Rosie! You are so clever!"

ROSIE: "I hope that the frog really is a prince, dear Liana. I would so very much love to see you live happily ever after, like me!"

LIANA: "Oh dear Rosie! I am so happy now! You have solved my problem for me! I knew you would help me! I am going to go home right now to my kingdom far, far away and kiss the frog... well get to know him better first, and the stroke him, and then maybe kiss him! Where is your Prince Peter? I'd like him to take me back through the magic portal."

ROSIE: "Oh mijn prins is playing with Scout. They are playing hide-and-seek. Let them play for a little bit longer. Please sit and finish your tea and have another chocolate Easter Egg."

LIANA: "Oh, only of you insist, my dear Rosie."

ROSIE: "I do, dear Liana!"

This beautiful faerie tale pantomime nursery tea set was made in England by the Shell China Company in the 1930s. It features eight cups, saucers and plates as well as a teapot, coffee pot, milk jug, sugar bowl, platters, sandwich plate, a lidded soup tureen on its own dish and a gravy or cream jug. Not all the set is being used today. Each piece is gilt edged and decorated and feature different faerie tales including: "Cinderella", "Little Red Riding Hood", "Dick Whittington and his Cat", "Jack and the Beanstalk" and "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" amongst others. This is probably the first time I have had almost the entire set out on display. The set I acquired from England, and it is a sister set to a 1920s Shell China Company nursery rhyme tea set that I was given as a gift some years ago by a close friend who knows I collect nursery ware and children’s tea sets. There are also doll (bear) sized tea spoons which are sterling silver salt spoons, and the sugar ladle in the "Cinderella" sugar bowl is from the Eighteenth Century and is sterling silver.

Well here is something new we didn't know about Rosie! She is friends with a real princess, from a land far away! You can see Liana searching for the magic portal in Mummy Marian\'s garden when she came across Peter here: www.flickr.com/photos/66094586@N06/54487028000/ or in the first comment below. You can see her arrival in our garden here: or in the first comment below. and Liana and Rosie chatting here: www.flickr.com/photos/66094586@N06/54487838517/in/photost... or in the first comment below.

Thank you to Marian Kloon (on and off) for the use of her photo of Liana in my photo montage.
