Road sign on State Highway 64 indicating that Grand Canyon National Park is closed. A flashing automated sign can be seen in the background with a similar message. This was due to the Government Shutdown. Although the Park Superintendent dutifully followed orders from above and shut the visitor center, stores, hotels, gift shops, campgrounds, hiking trails, museums, etc., Highway 64 remained open for a few days as a through route between Highway 89 and Tusayan. The vindictive Superintendent subsequently shut the road because visitors had the audacity to stop along the highway and look out at his canyon. Imagine that! Apparently he was in the process of devising a means to screen the entire his Canyon with a spite fence when the shutdown ended ; ). Way to go NPS!

TWI’s CrystalTM software makes ultrasonic inspection of industrial structures using Full-Matrix Capture (FMC), Virtual Source Aperture (VSA) and Plane Wave Imaging (PWI) easy.
The fully automated software delivers an intuitive interface for ultrasonic inspection techniques with high defect detection and sizing accuracy capabilities and real time inspection via planar or complex geometry structures.
These capabilities mean that Crystal can be integrated into in-service and production environments within industries including nuclear, defence, oil and gas, aerospace and rail.
Developments in computer hardware mean that real time implementation of total focusing method (TFM)-based algorithms such as full matrix capture, plane wave imaging and virtual source aperture are now possible. Each of these algorithms post processes the ultrasonic data to synthesise a PA focus spot at every pixel in an image, giving a fully focussed and easy-to-interpret image.
A range of inspection calibration settings and the ability to save and analyse data following inspection alongside a range of analysis and reporting tools makes the whole inspection and reporting task easier to complete.

Bend, Ore. -- A group of 45 federal snow surveyors gathered in Bend Jan. 10 - 15, 2016 to train on measuring mountain snowpack and cold-weather survival. USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) hosts the Westwide Snow Survey training every year to support snow surveyors across 13 Western states.
“Often times our snow survey crews must traverse difficult mountain terrains to manually measure the snowpack in remote areas,” said Tony Tolsdorf, one of the organizers for this year’s training. “The Westwide Snow Survey training is absolutely essential to sustain our snow survey program. We ensure our people are prepared in the event of an emergency and keep them up-to-speed on the methods for measuring.”
Training topics included outdoor survival, mountain medicine, avalanche preparedness, a history of snow survey, shelter construction, methods of measurement, and more. Guest instructors included Brian Horner of Learn to Return Training based in Anchorage, Alaska and Nancy Pfeiffer of the Alaska Avalanche School also based in Anchorage.
Since its inception in 1935, USDA’s Snow Survey and Water Supply Forecasting Program has grown into a network of 1,185 manually-measured snow courses and 858 automated snow telemetry stations across 13 Western states, including Alaska. The program provides streamflow forecasts at 673 stream gages in the West. Data from the automated snow sites are available near real-time through an extensive web delivery system.

It actually seems pretty practical if you think about it.
If your starfighter runs out of gas, how can you make it to a station to refuel? Well you can't, so instead, we send the fuel to you!

Flickr seems pretty terrible for video playback. I'd suggest if you have problems viewing it you reduce the size of your browser and let it buffer. Also the first target I picked was not Polaris, I made a typo as I had picked Polaris on the initial test run. It was Bode's Galaxy.
I now run my AVX equatorial mount from inside the house via USB cable and Stellarium. I also now have auto guiding capability using Orion's Star Shoot Auto Guider. So far I've been able to test up to 5 minute exposure times. Posted originally on Facebook, I do still get questions on how to do it.

I took the kitchen sink approach with my design today. i crammed about as much stuff as possible on here … it maybe would have benefitted from some simpler treatment, but this is what I doled out instead. I like it this way … a little more entropy-realistic.

Automated Radioxenon Sampler-Analyzer or ARSA (shown here with its external panels) analyzes air samples for radioactive xenon, or radioxenon, that seep from underground nuclear explosions the most common testing method today but the most difficult to detect. ARSA has a detection sensitivity 10 to 100 times greater than other systems being used. It is the only completely automated radioactive xenon monitor.
