Advancing and receding contact angles are readily determined by inclining the substrate and allowing the drop to deform as a function of gravity. By mounting a ramé-hart goniometer on the optional Automated Tilting Base, it is possible to incline not only the substrate but the entire instrument, preserving perfectly the optics-to-specimen alignment. Feral Automated System: ULTB-1 is a living research project, creating a new vision of automated systems: it re-enacts a networked body of Communism composed from different vegetal, digital and engineering layers. Plants here are a pure “hyle”, a scaffold of the project — in the material of the network, its exchanging information (vegetal cryptocurrency) and its very protocols of exchange (derived from the real mechanisms of vegetal communication). The network rethinks the ecological status of vegetal biodiversity as a legacy of the agrobiological experiments: plants created in the Soviet laboratories and communal households (Heracleum, Lupinus, Populus) still do their labor as green proletarians and accumulate toxic resources on the edge of abandoned industries. By collecting the products of their labor into the power source (flow battery), we are using it for starting and maintaining the network. Toxins accumulated within feral plants help to reconstruct the idea of a commons of — always unstable — interspecies connections.

The Fogponic Grow Box is an automated, self contained, plant ecosystem. The Grow Box is a fogponic plant box within a humidity and temperature monitored box. The underside of the top lid has strips of LEDs in both blue and red to promote root growth and some flowering effects. The box should require low amounts of additional sun light and minimally impact the surrounding environment.
The grow system suspends mesh plastic pots so roots can reach mist generated by an ultrasonic mister sitting a few inches above water mixed with hydroponic grow solution. Timers turn everything on and off. Initial tests average around a $1.00 a month to run the system 24 hours a day.
