Calwa--named for the California Wine Association--has its own post office, but it's basically an unincorporated area on the edge of Fresno's southside industrial area. Its streets fit seamlessly into the Fresno street grid. Its tiny "downtown" commercial district is just three blocks of Jensen Avenue which includes this (former?) nightclub, a couple of auto shops, four barber shops, and four places that claim to specialize in birria de chivo (not including El Taco Solito which sits in a state of spectacular decay).
Interestingly enough, this property was gifted to the current owner in 1991: deeds.desotocountyms.gov/W/W00237-00442.pdf, none of my business but it's posted online for all the world to see anyway! It's obvious this station has been very well taken care of over the years. The deed shown in that link references an earlier deed (in book 55). Unfortunately, online records only go back to book 81. I've backtracked a lot of mid-1970's retail history in Southaven by looking from one deed backward to another, using the method mentioned above. Of course, that's provided the deed isn't too old to be posted online. In Memphis, a lot of property is owned by slumlor---uh, I mean, "landlords", so the method doesn't work so well there!

This was once the corporate office, factory, and warehouse for Zenith electronics. After the corporation left, a lot of it was repurposed into auto repair shops. These are the leftovers.
I can't remember which cylinder had lost compression, and I can't even remember the failure mode. All I'm sure of is that it hadn't dropped a valve seat, a common problem in air-cooled Vanagons and late Buses.
I do remember that we installed a new piston and cylinder set and had the heads overhauled. We bet that the bottom end was still solid, and it was.
This engine was still running quite nicely when Ken sold the camper several years later.
