In my senior year of high school, I told my parents I was going to attend a magic convention with my magic mentor, Eldon Wigton. I told them I would be gone all weekend, and I asked to borrow one of their cars to drive to Eldon's house, who lived about half an hour away. They said okay.
That weekend, I climbed into my mom's car and drove to the next state over, Pennsylvania, where I spent the weekend with my girlfriend Amy, who was a freshman at college. When I got home, my parents asked if I'd had a good time at the convention, and I said I had. A really, really good time.
A few days later, my mom came back from her hair appointment at the local vo tech school and asked me to guess who she'd run into there: Eldon! I wasn't surprised. He taught auto mechanics at the school. (When he wasn't teaching, he performed magic under the stage name Dr. Eldoonie.)
What surprised me was my mom asked Eldon if he'd also had a good time at the convention, to which Eldon replied, "What convention?"
A month later, after my parents finally un-grounded me, I told Eldon about how I lied to my parents so I could get together with my girlfriend. Then I braced myself for his response. I'd put him in an awkward position that threatened our mentorship. He had every right to be mad at me, or disappointed, or both.
What he said to me I've never forgotten. He said, "The next time you want to do something like that, tell me ahead of time, and I'll cover for you."
At that moment, I realized something about Eldon. He was my friend. He was an adult with an adult job and adult responsibilities, and he was my friend.
I hadn't known that was possible.
Three years later, Amy and I married and moved from Ohio to Maryland. Dr. Eldoonie stayed in Ohio and turned pro. He went on to perform for Presidents, and in 1992 became the "World's Fastest Magician" by performing 225 magic tricks in two minutes. (You can look that up in the Guinness Book of World Records!)
Eldon died last year at the age of 63.
Today, a magician from Ohio walked into the magic shop where I work, and during the course of our conversation we discovered we had a certain someone in common: the magic mentor Dr. Eldoonie.

My camera fell from my hands & shattered on the curb, and I bounded happily toward that display rack of tires at the intersection yonder. I did not even notice the contemporary senior citizens' architecture looming over everything.

Orsi captured this funny scene while walking around and exploring on Block Island, part of the great state of Rhode Island. Unlike Rhode Island, Block Island is actually an Island. It is not shaped like a block, however, as it's name would suggest.

On any given day around Ottawa you can see a very unique Honda Accord driving around town. I'm pretty sure there is nothing else like it in town. It is full of lights, decals, chrome and anything else you can think of. When the car is parked in the Byward Market you can always be sure there is a crowd of tourists around it with their cameras at the ready.
The driver of that car is Ismael a very friendly and obliging individual, when I approached him about my project he asked me to join him at his table to tell his story.
Ismael has had a very eventful life, he was born in the Congo to a British father and a Greek mother. He tells me that only him and his sister are black, the rest of their siblings are white (half-caste). In 2003 there was a lot of tribal conflict in his native country, along with his wife and child he fled to Uganda. The violence was so bad in the Congo that members of his extended family were killed.. Approximately 4 years ago Ismael and his family arrived in Canada, he is a mechanic by trade (hence the unique wheels). Currently he is working on getting the appropriate qualifications to work as an auto mechanic in Canada.
Thank you Ismael for sharing your story, I wish you well in your ambitions to be a mechanic. No doubt we will be seeing you around town in your very unique Honda Accord.

I have had a lot of Mechanical photographs as of late. The reason is because I would like to call attention to the technicians and mechanics who repair engines and vehicles.
Most people do not realize the effort and difficulty required to repair today's vehicles. Gone are the days of the points, condenser, carburetor. Today it's onboard computer, sensors and Fuel Injection. There is much more equipment located under the hood today
The tools required are now more specialized and not what the average home mechanic has on hand. Diagnostic tools that read the onboard computer are required to troubleshoot a growing number of possible problems.
I have friends who are skilled technicians. They are required to attend classes either online or at a school, to keep up with the changing technology.
BTW: Here is a photograph of a burned piston I removed, back in 1975, from my 1964 Simca 1000. My dad purchased the car for $210. It was a great car for me at the time because, it taught me mechanics.
Problems could be fixed with little risk because, the car was inexpensive. So much so that instead of rebuilding the engine, we replaced the one burned piston. Car still ran great after the repair.
An inexpensive old car can be a great tool for anyone who wants to learn mechanics.

Tell the story of a stranger. Try using their environment to really inform the viewer of their story.
Story Telling: Good photographers can take beautiful images of something. Great photographers can take an image that tells its story. This category makes use of compositional rules and directed prompts to push you towards not just looking at the beauty of something, but to find a way to tell that something’s story.

These are men and women that I see almost every day while driving down Ogden Ave in Naperville, IL. This street is home to many of the car dealers like Toyota (these men were in front of the Toyota dealer), Nissan, Kia, etc. Nearly 2000 members of Automobile Mechanics Union Local 701 have been on strike since Aug. 1, affecting nearly 180 car dealerships in the Chicago area.
According to reports, the main sticking point in negotiations involves benefits for employees. According to the Chicago Tribune, a dispute over billable hours is also to blame, as mechanics say that they’re often working for free while they’re on the clock, because of manufacturer limits on the number of hours certain jobs take.
I see them out there with their children spouses/significant others and I have seen the support that motorist have shown these auto workers. Hopefully, they get what they want or at least close so they can go back to work and provide for their families.

don't normally post this kind of stuff but I was really happy with how this came out.
This is Terrell, a recent Dudley High School graduate. Among other things, Terrell has spent the last 6 months completely rebuilding this Older Subaru. He sourced the engine from a junk yard, pulled and reinstalled it with the help of his teacher, it's nearly finished. Needless to say, he's quite proud. After the summer, Terrell is planning on attending GTCC to study auto mechanics.

Here is the completed head gasket replacement project The water here is from my cleanup of the car and engine exhaust manifold.
Everything has been put back together. The car is ready to drive again. But, after 200 miles, I will adjust the valves and re-torque the head.
Here was the bill showing what I should have paid plus what I actually paid including the manifold gasket mistake.

Assuming the repair shop charges $1000, I have saved approximately $900 but, at a cost of 2 weeks time. 3 weeks time counting the mistake.
