Autofocus seems to get used to them slowly, another week or two and

I hope I'll be able to focus on spring flowers!

I was happy to see they made it and didn't drown.

Nikon D800 with lens Leica E Elmarit 180mm f/2.8 converted to Nikon F mount with Leitax bayonnet. Lens was mounted on modified Teleconverter TC-16A to provide semi-autofocus function driven by motor of D800! Practically I was shooting with an Autofocus lens 290mm f/4.2

Taken hand held with prefocusing manually and autofocusing automatically by camera body when pressing the shutter. ISO 500, 1/1250sec, at f/5.6. Image is a cropped image (50% of original).

If you read 30 year old literature from Nikon, this teleconverter was invented as a temporary solution to make manual AIS lenses work as Autofocus lenses. Actually it is autofocus as long as you pre-focus the lens close enough from focus point. The optics inside the TC-16A will move back and forth to finetune the optical focused image. It works as long as you modify the TC-16A according to the instructions provided here:

www.foolography.com/free-stuff/modify-tc-16a/

In my case I just bought a teleconverter already modified on ebay (easy to find) for $250.

Some restrictions and limitations I discovered:

- only center of picture of FF camera will be sharp. For portrait or animal pictures this does not bother me but for landscape that would be a problem. DX camera would do very well with crop factor.

- optimum aperture of lens is F/5.6. As a matter of fact the TC-16A will make lose 1.2 stop of light and will allow the D800 or D4 to function at their limit capability (f/8). on D700 or D300, f/4 would be the max limit of the aperture to use to still benefit of AF function.

- To avoid the FEE error message of the Camera body, when mounted with TC-16A, one must program the camera body using f9 function of menu to set the aperture control from the aperture ring instead of the sub-command dial. In mode A or M, the combination will work perfectly as it was a normal Nikon lens with aperture ring. The exif data will show a default 145mm focal length and f/4 value programmed in the TC16-A modified but will not alter the correct exposure calculated by the camera.

The very good news is that all Nikon AiS lenses with sufficient space at rear of lens to allow protruding part of RC-16A optics to fit inside, will work. This extends to Zeiss ZF, "Leitaxed" Leica R lenses, Mamiya 645 lenses converted to F mount!

Yes, I am very happy to have finally found a way to solve 80% of my focusing problems when using MF lenses on D800/D800E I have to accept however a slight degradation of the original optical quality of the lens and the change of focal length (x1.6). If I want perfect focus 100% of the time while keeping original quality of lens and focal length, then I use the Live view mode with zoomed image inspected through a loupe (example Hoodman).

Manufactured from 1985 to 1988 by Minolta Camera Co. of Osaka, Japan. While other manufactures were all entrenched working on autofocus lenses for their line of 35mm SLRs, Minolta quietly rocked the industry back on it’s heels with the introduction of the first in-body autofocus system for 35mm SLRs. It was a bold and risky move—Minolta changed from their beloved MC/MD lens mount to an mechanical/electronic “A” mount. The camera featured many other “firsts” other than the autofocus that today we think of as standards. It had an in-body winder providing film advance and motorized rewind. To make room for the needed battery power, they made use of a grip on the right side of the camera—today, most cameras have a grip of this type whether the batteries are there or not! It featured pushbutton controls instead of dials and had a large, external LCD display.

What’s in a name? More correctly, what’s in how you write that name? In Europe it was called the “7000 AF” and in Japan the “Alpha 7000” (and you thought Sony came up with that all by themselves!). In North America, Minolta chose to market it with the Maxxum name. In spelling the name on the body of the camera, the decision was made to use an interlocking double “x” (as this example has—see picture). Looks nice until Exxon sees it in a print ad. The interlocking double “X” had been an Exxon trademark for some time. While Exxon did sue, they and Minolta came to a gentlemen’s agreement on the problem. Minolta apologized and agreed to change the logo-type to strait “xx”. And Exxon allowed Minolta to leave what had been sold by that point out there and only change new and undistributed stock. I wonder if it would have been settled the same way today…

The unique in-camera autofocus system relied on a semi-silvered pattern on the mirror (shown here) that allowed a portion of the image to transmit thru the viewing mirror onto a smaller “piggy back” mirror that reflected that broken image down into the bottom of the mirror box to a set of beam splitters and CCD devices. Basically, it focuses by looking for an area of contrast and focusing it to the finest detail (i.e. a hard edge) and the focus point of the lens. Very cool—works with ANY lens on the camera. The “A” mount also provided data to the camera about focal length, zoom position and aperture settings. Seems another company decided this was too close to their patent and sued. And let’s just say they we’re not as nice as Exxon. Unfortunately for Minolta, its autofocus design was found to infringe on the patents of Honeywell and in 1991, Minolta was ordered to pay Honeywell damages, penalties, trial costs and other expenses in a final amount of $127.6 million.

On a personal note, I’m very fond of this camera. As a younger man, I worked in a camera shop. This was the last “new” camera I sold as I went into a different career path in mid 1985….

Shot about 11:30AM, so the light was getting contrasty, and yeah, this shot is a bit contrasty as well. I shot this with my L/D wheel in the middle, which is normal for my camera, but I think this film likes to be overexposed a little bit.

Another Rollei exercise to make money solely on the name. This is a fixed lens compact, with a 28 mm wide angle. Curiously, there is no mention of the lens aperture, which is not a good sign especially coming from such a famous name. There is no menion to where the camera was manufactured.

Took many attempts, and it’s amazing this worked, as I was just relying on the auto focus.

Photographed using the Fujifilm Zoom Date 70 (aka Fujifilm Silvi 70), and Kodak Ultramax 400 film. Taken at Kalorama Memorial Reserve.

I'm shocked the camera still works. My general experience is that early 2000s film cameras rarely still work (even though it is easy to find a working one from the 1950s).

autofocus is nice to have!

I shot in DX mode which crops away the extra pixels and takes me 1.5X closer while allowing for up to 7 FPS with the Nikon D810's Nikon MB-D12 Battery Grip using the 8 AA battery option! 8 Duracles took me through around 3,000 shots no problem--maybe more! I was shooting at the equivalent of 900mm with the 1.5x crop factor! Pretty close! Had I gone with the Nikon D4s, I would have gotten 12 fps, but no DX crop factor, as the sensor has only around 14mp, compared to the d810's 36 megapixels! Sure the larger pixel size on the Nikon D4s full frame sensor comes in handy indoors or at night, but in the brigth sun, there's more than enough light for the smaller pixels in crop mode! Sure we lose some pixels from the outer edges when shooting in DX crop mode, but most of those pixels would be cropped away in lightroom anyway. And the smaller files make the memory cards last longer, while also upping the FPS to 7 shots per second! Not quite 12 FPS< but still awesome and enough I felt!

Nikon D810 Photos Pro Women's Surfing Van's US Open Sports Photography Tamron SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD !

What a beautiful way to test the Nikon D810 and Tamron 150-600mm zoom lens for sports photography!

Many cities did he visit, and many were the nations with whose manners and customs he was acquainted; moreover he suffered much by sea while trying to save his own life and bring his men safely home; --Homer's Odyssey translated by Samuel Butler
