NASA astronaut Andre Douglas wears AR (Augmented Reality) display technology during an advanced technology run in the San Francisco Volcanic Field in Northern Arizona on May 21, 2024. The monocular lens consists of a pico-projector and waveguide optical element to focus an image for crew to see their real world overlaid with digital information. These unique near-eye form factors may be used to improve the usability and minimally impact the complex biomechanics of working in a pressurized suit environment.
Between May 13 and May 22, 2024, NASA astronauts Kate Rubins and Andre Douglas trudged through northern Arizona’s San Francisco Volcanic Field, a geologically Moon-like destination shaped by millions of years of volcanic eruptions. There, they made observations of the soil and rocks around them and collected samples. After the moonwalk simulations, the astronauts tested technology that could be used on Artemis missions, including a heads-up display that uses augmented reality to help with navigation, and lighting beacons that could help guide a crew back to a lunar lander. On June 9, 2026, Douglas was announced as a Mission Specialists for NASA's Artemis III prime crew.

I recently dropped by the “Trail Blazer” mural being worked on by artist Wendy Popko. She was quite busy, since the deadline is coming up in 2 weeks to finish. We had chatted earlier about the mural, that was commissioned by the city of Sterling Heights. It will be a very unique mural using AR - Augmented Reality, that will allow you to use an app on your cellphone to watch the mural come alive with movement. The hallway bends before it ends with another wall forming a 130 degree corner. It makes a great space for a winter season gallery and a fun chance to "corner winter".
We slapped together this simple design with my "Wall Gallery Designer" app on an iPhone Xs Max with images from my Flickr stream. Winter snow scenes seem to cry out for silver/chrome frames. Although mats can add a lot to a gallery, we decided against matting the pictures in this gallery.
The wall is real, but the frames and pictures are augmenting.
