I was lucky enough to test the pre-release of the iPhone ARToolKit SDK from ARToolWorks, so here's the result of a few days of hacking around.

Augmented reality is the result of using technology to superimpose information — sounds, images and text — on the world we see. Augmented reality (AR) is one of the biggest technology trends right now. AR let us see the real-life environment right in front of us—trees swaying in the park, dogs chasing balls, kids playing soccer—with a digital augmentation overlaid on it. It is, in fact, readily available and being used in a myriad of ways including as Snapchat lenses, in apps that help you find your car in a crowded parking lot, and in variety of shopping apps that let you try on clothes without even leaving home. The ultimate goal of augmented reality technology is to create a convenient and natural immersion, so there's a sense that phones and tablets will get replaced, though it isn't clear what those replacements will be. I've been fascinated with the power of programming since I got my first computer, a commodore 64.
