(side note: This set consists of the most public toy photos I've ever taken. Now, I'm not shy. I've had a few years of practice with toys in public. I've set up elaborate scenes in public places with no difficulty at all. But there's usually only a dozen or less folks around me during these pix. In Las Vegas, there were hundreds. I was honestly a little nervous about it.
Then I rounded a corner and was presented with this scene - A life-sized Blue Mannequin Group. Tons of people were circled around the statues taking pix. I waited till one of the statues cleared out, went up, and posed Target with the statue. The crowd LOVED it. Laughter all around and lots of pix of me doing this.
That did it. No more nerves at all. Just one of the most fun days I had in Las Vegas, taking stupid pix with an Uglydoll.)
Shania Twain Concert in Helsinki March 2004. She had an unusual stage setting as the stage was in the middle of Hartwall arena and not in the another end like usually.

Ricky Ross working the crowd during Thursday's excellent Deacon Blue gig at the Usher Hall.
I first saw Deacon Blue perform at Southampton University in 1987. The very next day I went out and bought Raintown. They've always been a great live band.
My review of the gig for TV Bomb should be appearing later today.

The other night, at the conclusion of a fun barbeque, one of the cars had developed a flat. Mark and James set to fixing it, and they quickly found a very receptive and interested audience.
(Cheap P&S cameras are great for lens flare effects...)

I got to tell the entire 21 year history of why I decided to write my book, how my writing group helped me with it, what writing the book did for me, how all the agents rejected it and eventually it was published in Thailand. I even told about how, in April of this year, I told a business colleague that I had produced a book about my biracial journey and I was going to ride on the coat tails of Obama. "You didn't say that," said my mother. Oh but I did. And the colleague said "I think you may have a niche there". So I told the group gathered here that I was going to call this marketing strategy The Audacity of Hype. It got the biggest laugh of my entire presentation.
In contrast the passages I chose to read from my book were quite serious and reflective. So even though I am a ham, my writing showed a much more serious side of me. And when I announced that the book was being sold at Kepler's there was a murmer of awe, Kepler's being the biggest remaining independent bookstore in the area and supposed to be the home of taste and fine literature. (The woman who handles the consignment books from local authors has had the book since July, but it was still on her review pile. But she happened to belong to my insight meditation center so when I made my presentation there about the book, she realized it had significance for Buddhists and told me just to go ahead and bring the book in.)
About 45 people showed up and we sold 20 books some to people who had already bought the book and wanted to give it as a gift. I had the best time and remembered everything I wanted to say and was able to pay tribute to the high standard of writing that the women of my writer's group have upheld. It was a fabulous end to an amazing week.
