Sculpture called Atom, located in Wycoller park near Colne. One of the four Panopticons that reside on or near the moors in Lancashire. I've used a rear bike light to give the red light and the light pollution is mainly from the moon.

Atom Bowl!

A mid-century era bowling alley.

I've included lots of nods to the 1950's and 1960's with period colour choices and shapes.

2013 Ariel Atom MY13 ATM 2 litre, with an uprated Honda Civic Type-R sourced 2.0-litre engine, at the Broadway Car Show in Worcestershire on 15 August 2026.

About to run a half-mile pass at Omega Motorsports' No Fly Zone Arizona.

The Atom, in Pendle, Lancs (just over the border from Yorkshire) is a 'panopticon' - a structure providing a comprehensive view. At left is Pendle Hill.

Buck Atom's souvenirs in Tulsa, OK. Great muffler man starring as Buck Atom. A very fun place to visit!

Set in the landscape of Pendle, the Atom was designed by Peter Meacock with Katarina Novomestska of Peter Meacock Projects. It was launched by Mayor of Pendle, Councillor George Adams with Anthony Wilson and designer Peter Meacock on 22 September 2006. The bronze-coated GRC (Glass Reinforced Concrete) structure provides both a work of art and a viewing point and shelter from which to enjoy the surrounding landscape.

A commercially available ‘atom interferometer’ – exploiting clouds of ultra-cold atoms to make extremely precise measurements of variations in local gravity – on show during ESA’s inaugural Quantum Technology workshop.

“We’ve been looking at applying the latest quantum technology to space,” explains ESA’s Bruno Leone. “Quantum physics is still regarded as abstract, but products based on its effects are commonplace today, such as microprocessors, solid-state imaging devices and lasers.

“What we’re interested in harnessing more advanced, subtle, aspects of quantum mechanics, including superposition and entanglement, made feasible by recent advances in experimental techniques and equipment.”

This desk-sized atom interferometer, produced by M Squared in the UK, is one example. Finely tuned laser beams confine clumps of atoms kept cooled close to absolute zero. Like ripples meeting on a pond, their resulting interference patterns can highlight tiny changes in the surrounding environment.

Topics at last week’s event included ultra-accurate quantum-based measuring devices and clocks for space and wider commercialisation of the underlying technologies.

Also discussed was ‘quantum teleportation’: in 2012 ESA’s observatory in the Canary Islands helped to set a distance world record by reproducing the characteristics of a light particle across 143 km of open air.

How atoms interact and behave is common high-school knowledge, but what we know is based on assumptions or snapshots. Electron microscopes have taken images of atoms so we know how they settle, but we have never recorded atoms moving.

The ESA–Roscosmos Plasma Kristall-4 (PK-4) experiment is recreating atomic interactions in a fluid on a larger scale on the International Space Station. The proxy atoms in PK-4 are microparticles, which are suspended and charged in plasma (an ionised gas with electrons and ions). The microparticles interact with each other via the high electrical charges, forming a strongly coupled liquid or solid – a classical model system for condensed matter.

This image shows the typical purple glow of an argon plasma in the PK-4 hardware on Earth. Microparticles are introduced into the plasma to observe how they behave.

On Earth the particles are influenced by gravity but in space the particles will behave similarly to charged atoms in a fluid or crystal structure allowing researchers to understand better the hidden interactions of our world.

PK-4 is installed in the European Physiology Module on the European space laboratory Columbus and runs for up to four days, four times a year.
