As CSX M511 from Detroit rolls though South Deshler as we have the Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS shining in the sky right above the signal bridge at South Deshler.
C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS comet. Was discovered in February 2023 by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS). It was also independently observed in January 2023 by the Tsuchinshan Chinese Observatory.
The comet has a retrograde orbit, meaning it moves in the opposite direction to most major solar system planets. It has an 80,000-year orbit around the sun, but NASA now says it may leave the solar system entirely.
At its closest point to the sun, called perihelion, September 27th, 2024, it was 0.39 astronomical units (AU) from the sun.
At its closest point to Earth, October 12th, 2024, coming within approximately 70 million kilometers (44 million miles) of Earth.
It was visible primarily to those in the Southern Hemisphere and the Tropics until about October 8. Viewers in the Northern Hemisphere had more opportunities to see it in subsequent days. Binoculars might help you locate it, especially after October 15th.
Comet A3 is believed to originate in the Oort cloud, a theorized shell of icy bodies that orbit at the solar system's far outer edges.
Captured with Askar ACL200, a 200mm widefield telescope on October 20th, 2024.
My first ever comet image. Some alignment artifacts near the head. But for this being my 1st attempt at tracking, guiding, capturing, and processing data. I am pleased.

Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan–ATLAS) streaks across the sky over Mount Whitney in California’s Sierra Nevada mountains in October 2024. It was visible to the naked eye in the darkness of this wonderful dark sky part of the world before the rising nearly full moon washed the sky out. After capturing the comet above the famous mountain peak, I raced around the area to try to find a spot where it would seemingly collide with it. I had to move fast and just barely managed to capture this before the comet dipped behind the summit. Unfortunately for me, a large piece of fibrous dust landed on the lens for this exact moment, and it took me a very long time to overcome my irritation and painstakingly remove the faint shadow of the dust across the sky to the right of the comet. Having done that I can finally share this image. There is the possibility of another comet being visible this October and with some luck I maybe can capture that one as well.
We had a visit from an Atlas Moth today. It was unbelievably big - easily the largest moth I have ever seen, being bigger than my hand. This one is a male - the females are actually even larger and are more square shaped.
Adult Atlas moths are weak, unsteady fliers. To conserve energy, the moths rest during the day and fly at night. This one was resting under the roof of the walkway at school. As they lack fully formed mouthparts, the adults cannot eat, subsisting entirely on fat reserves accumulated during the larval stage. As a result, they live for only a few days during which their sole objective is seeking out a mate. Adults may be found on wing throughout the year but are most abundant between November and January.

"During the first months on Atlas, we marked out mining fields and progressively established outposts close to each field, to operate and maintain the harvesters from. My parents were stationed at one of those outposts for maintenance duty. For the remaining years of my scholarship in The Ring, before joining service as a drone operator on the sun-side, I only saw them on rare occasions. One of those was the regular medical check they would undergo, as traces of the raw materials on the machinery they were taking care of could be toxic despite all protective equipment. Our med staff quickly discovered that, curiously, not everyone reacted to such exposure.
After refining the resources, command launched unmanned carriers in closely spaced intervals towards other star systems controlled by the confederation. Given Atlas' thin atmosphere and comparably low mass, our engineers had developed highly efficient launch systems early on, halving our colony's fuel expenses for exports. The saved budget was partially redirected towards local causes, the majority however was shoved into the pockets of the Confederation."

Let me know what you think!
The push is always part of us
And gravity's never a friend
Deciding on who we can trust
And finding our way to crescendo, to the unknown
We'll never make it outside
Lest we unlock the past and release
The future that we've left to die
For too long we've taken placebos
But the unknown, is awakening
Don't give up now, there's already so much at stake
If Atlas falls, I'll rise up and carry us all the way
No, we can never look back
Return to the salt and the sea
The quiet is only a trap
And I will not take the placebos
'Cause the unknown is awakening
But I will crescendo
Don't give up now, there's already so much at stake
If Atlas falls, I'll rise up and carry us all the way
It won't pull me down
The weight of impossible days
I'll stand tall
I'll rise up and carry us all the way
Keep moving forward now
Keep your head above the clouds
I'm right with you, I will lift you
Just hold on
Don't give up now, there's already so much at stake
If Atlas falls, I'll rise up and carry us all the way
It won't pull me down (moving forward now)
The weight of impossible days (keep your head above the clouds)
I'll stand tall (I'm right with you, I will lift you, just hold on)
I'll rise up and carry us all the way
I'll carry us all the way
In Greek mythology, Atlas was a Titan condemned to hold up the celestial heavens.
The Old Town Hall Potsdam is located on the Old Market in Potsdam in the immediate vicinity of the St. Nikolai Church, the Barberini Museum and the Potsdam City Palace. It was created between 1753 and 1755 based on ideas and on behalf of Friedrich II
