Adding a Vauxhall grille to your Opel Astra makes it a more special car in the Netherlands. The Vauxhall brand is only used in Britain. But except for the badging the cars are excatly the same as the Opels in the rest of Europe.

The Vauxhall Astra H is a small family car that was produced from 2004–2009, although various models were still available during 2010. It has a reputation for being economical and refined. Reviews note that it's a good all-rounder, but not the most exciting car to drive. Here, we have the Astra SXI Estate.

Summer 2004 saw the launch of the five-door Astra H hatch with an estate version following hot on its heels. As new product launches went, this was a biggie, Vauxhall's financial well being resting firmly on the Astra's neatly bevelled shoulders. It was a car that benefited from prior product decisions. With the Meriva and Zafira taking care of the 'utility' roles, the Astra was given free rein to be a little sassier than many rivals. Vauxhall kept buyer interest on the boil by releasing pictures of the even swoopier three-door Sporthatch model. When the Sporthatch finally landed in dealerships in March 2005 it proved an instant hit. Vauxhall again played a smart card, keeping putative purchasers interested with the carrot of a powerful VXR sports variant. That didn't arrive until Autumn 2005, but it's quite a tool. From 2006, the TwinTop 2-door coupé convertible was available in the Vauxhall Astra range, having already been a variant on the Tigra.

Early in 2007, the Astra range was slightly revised, with some minor cosmetic changes. The main differences however came under the bonnet. The 1.6 TWINPORT petrol engine was up-rated from 105 to 115PS, while the 170PS 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol unit was replaced by a new 180PS 1.6-litre turbocharged powerplant.

Driving features are; Good road manners, Composed handling, Firm suspension set-up, Good body control through bends, and Sport button sharpens the car's responses.

Last year Opel introduced the sixth generation of the Astra. The first Astra appeared in 1991 as successor of the famous Opel Kadett models. Now with Opel as a part of Stellantis the Astra shares many mechanical components with the Peugeot 308. This is a hybrid version with a 1.6 litre engine and an electric motor.

Astra vs the cutters and the cutters have won its completely ruined! No great loss though these are common but i got me worried for possible damage to rare finds in the area

It's a Vauxhall Astra, but not like my Vauxhall Astra SRI. This is the daddy of the Astras. Seen here on show at the Beckingham Transport show in the north Nottinghamshire village in early August 2019.

Very tidy. Unsurprising to see it has covered a fairly low mileage, just 36-odd thousand at it most recent MoT.

The little girl who fell to earth.

She was born in the dim light on a distant planet. All her life she dreamed of that far-off green and blue globe she knew only as Earth. Her greatest wish was to someday find a way to go there, knowing she would find true happiness and the fulfillment of all her dreams.

As she grew, she learned that if a being from her world wished and hoped hard enough, it would be possible to ride with the falling stars that raced through the sky. She held that thought dear and close to her heart, waiting for the time that would be right. Finally the day arrived… she closed her eyes and dreamed and wished… and there she was! Home at last, she felt certain.

I had this as a loan car for a couple of days while my wife's Toyota Auris was in for a service and MoT. Interesting to make the comparison between the two as similar size family hatchbacks of the same era....

I thought it went well, initially I wondered if it was a 1.6 until I looked on DVLA. The 1.4 felt quite torquey lowdown, more so than the Auris, but still revved well if not quite so freely. Didn't have it long enough to check economy.

I was surprised by the low gearing, little more than 20mph per 1,000 rpm meant the engine was spinning at nearly 3,000 at 60mph, which was what I'd expect from 4th let alone 5th. No 6-speed gearbox here, which would have nicely dropped the rev's at higher speed (the Auris does have one).

Steering, handling, ride and brakes all seemed decent on the local country roads, the latter were particularly strong.

So far, so good. However, inside I felt it didn't work anywhere near so well and there were things that were either poorly designed or that I would struggle to live with on a daily basis.

The gearlever seemed a couple of inches too short to fall easily to hand and who decided that burying the HVAC controls so low down was the best place for them? Difficult to reach or see, but at least they were rotary dials - those in the Auris are fiddly push buttons, but placed higher up. When the key was in the ignition it poked out like another column stalk, it had the indicator controls that flick rather than move and there was no temperature gauge.

I didn't feel like I would want to take a long drive in it, even after my short journeys I was starting get the odd twinge, but perhaps I hadn't spent long setting up the seat to suit me.

Legroom in the rear was minimal behind me as a relatively tall driver, I struggled to drop my bags in the footwell there. The Auris definitely has more room for rear seat occupants, with the bonus of a flat floor - why does a FWD car like the Astra need a central tunnel?

The reverse slope on the rear door was annoying, it felt like something that would get in the way and it nearly caught my shoulder a couple of times when gettings stuff in and out of the back.

My conclusion was that dynamically it worked well, and I can see why they perform so well on the banger track, but as an overall package the softer, smoother feel of the Auris is preferable to me.

I don't usually pick up lost wheeltrims as I'd quickly end up with a garage full of them with the amount that seem to be around here. However I did make an exception for this and the one in the next picture.

I caught sight of this Mk2 Astra trim and knew instantly what it was, despite it being half buried and upside down. Unfortunately it's missing a chunk and is cracked, but I thought it still worth bringing back. It must have been in its resting place where I found it for years.

Vauxhall liked to use bronze and gold for their luxury models it would seem, with the Cavalier CD using the same colours.

The Astra on its last outing with us. Time for a change. Three and a half years with this car seems to have flown by.

Such are the changes in car values, the trade-in price we agreed was only £1200 below what we paid for it in 2019! And the next owner will very likely pay more for it now as a four year old car with 40k on the clock than we did as a less than one year old car with 20k. Crazy.
