More than half the world’s population is now urban, and more than a quarter of the 100 fastest-growing cities are in Africa. Though urbanization is often associated with improved health, African cities are struggling to cope with the demands of growing populations. Poor women and children in African cities are the least likely socioeconomic groups to have access to preventive health services. Child mortality among the urban poor is double the rate of the wealthiest urban residents.
To support a prosperous and equitable future for Africa, health systems must adapt to meet the needs of growing urban populations. Speakers from Management Sciences for Health (MSH), the U.S. Agency for International Development, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and the Africa Population and Health Research Center will discuss public health trends and interventions that have made an impact in African cities.
A reception and art exhibit following the discussion will feature photographs from A Corridor of Contrasts, a report on urban health issues in West Africa’s Abidjan-Lagos transport corridor, published by MSH’s USAID-funded African Strategies for Health Project.

William J. Lynch Jr., a clinical staff pharmacist at Kennedy University Hospital in New Jersey, an adjunct faculty member of the Rowan School of Osteopathic Medicine, an anti-addiction advocate and a Delaware resident, spoke May 9 at the monthly meeting of atTAcK addiction about the increased dangers associated with marijuana use.
With Delaware considering legislation to legalize recreational marijuana use, Lynch said such a change could have a particularly damaging impact on young people. With marijuana illegal except for medical uses in Delaware, 70.3% of students 12 and older in Delaware who have used drugs say the first drug they used was marijuana, Lynch said. According to the 2015 Youth Risk Behavior Survey in Delaware, 8.1% of all students said they has used marijuana in their lifetimes. Of those who said they used marijuana in the past 30 days, 5.9% said they had used it 40 or more times. Of the 9.1% of high school seniors who had used in the past 30 days, 13.3% said they had used it 40 or more times.
The biggest threat from today’s marijuana, Lynch said, is from its increased THC (the active ingredient). The THC level in today’s marijuana is three times as high (13% or more), compared to average THC levels of 3.96% in 1996. Lynch said some strains in Colorado have THC levels at 35% or higher.
With frequent use of marijuana, especially at a young age, Lynch said the detrimental health risks are ramped up dramatically. Studies show the risk of developing testicular cancer triples if a person began using marijuana before 18 and used it more than weekly.
Lynch said studies have shown that frequent marijuana use doubles the risk for stroke. And British studies published in Lancet found that daily use of the highest-potency marijuana increases the risk of psychosis by five times.
In 10 studies involving 66,000 individuals, Lynch said there is a higher relationship to mental illness and frequent marijuana use than testicular cancer. “There is a dose response relationship,” he said. With daily marijuana use, cannabis dependency increases 18 times and suicide attempts increase by seven times.
Even second-hand marijuana smoke can be a danger, Lynch said, with children coming into emergency rooms with THC levels in their blood after being around adults smoking marijuana.
The American Academy of Pediatrics issued a report on counseling parents and teens about marijuana use and issued this statement, “Marijuana is not a benign drug, especially for teens.” Read the report:

Shot this headshot for my fiancé's law school classmate. Most law firms seem to ask for a portrait for all their summer associates; I'm guessing most don't go this overboard.

From WI DNR website:
The dominant feature at Pewits Nest is a 30- to 40-foot deep gorge formed during the retreat of the last glacier. Associated with it are Skillet Creek, shaded cliffs, and a northern dry-mesic forest. When Glacial Lake Baraboo drained, Skillet Creek cut a narrow canyon through the Cambrian sandstone, forming a series of potholes and waterfalls. The layers of Cambrian sandstone show that a finer-grained sediment was laid down by the Cambrian seas "inside" the syncline, a process different from that at Parfrey's Glen where coarser Cambrian conglomerates and sandstones are found in layers. Skillet Creek has a gradient of 38 feet/mile and an average flow of 0.8 cfs. Forest cover includes red cedar, white pine, hemlock, and yellow birch.
H.E. Cole wrote of the area:
"At one time the jaws at the mouth of the nest supported a great iron shaft, a cumbersome overshot waterwheel. . . . Before the building of the mill, an individual lived in the solid sandstone, like a gnome in a cavern. His abode was some ten feet above a deep pool of water. This dwelling resembled the nest of a phoebe (or peewit, an earlier name for this bird), hence dubbed by early settlers the 'Peewit's Nest.'"
This person used the water to turn lathes for repairing or manufacturing equipment. No evidence of this remains. Pewits Nest is owned by the DNR and was designated a State Natural Area in 1985.
