Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown, Lisbon Portugal
Charles Correa Associates designed this research and diagnostic centre located in Lisbon. It is a state-of-the-art facility guided by some of the best scientist in the world. The site, where the river meets the Atlantic Ocean, is steeped in history. It is the site where Henry the Navigator, Vasco de Gama and other great Portuguese left on their journeys into the unknown—a perfect metaphor for the discoveries of contemporary science today. The 3 units that constitute the project are:
•the largest for the doctors and scientist,
•the second for the theatre, the exhibition hall, the foundation offices, etc,
•the third is an open-air amphitheatre for the city.
They have been arranged to create a 125m long pathway leading diagonally across the site, towards the open seas. This pathway is ramped up at a gentle slope of 1:20, so as you ascend, you see only sky ahead of you. At the end of the ramp are two stone monoliths, straight from the quarry. When you reach the highest point, you begin to see a large body of water, which seemingly connects (i.e. without any visual break) to the ocean beyond. In the centre of this water body, just below the surface of the water, is an oval shaped object—made of stainless steel and slightly convex, so that it reflects the blue sky and passing clouds above.
Beyond its scientific importance, the centre’s design has also caught the attention of architects around the world. The bid to design the site was won by Indian architect Charles Correa, who also designed the Brain and Cognitive Sciences Complex at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The centre features a large interior rainforest connecting clinics and laboratories, chemotherapy suites with gardens, and many areas open for public use, including exhibition halls, an outdoor amphitheatre and landscaped walking areas. It is hoped that the location of the centre in the heart of Lisbon, as well as the openness of the site to the public, will encourage awareness of the centre and the Champalimaud Foundation, as well as the health and medical issues that their work is aiming to address.

As most folks know, Jimmi Hendrix is strongly associated with Seattle. Outside of the building on Capitol Hill that housed his studio there's a statue of him shredding on a guitar.
Today, that building houses an art supply store my wife frequents and I tried many times to capture a photo of the statue that I liked. But bad or poor light or heavy pedestrian or road traffic or both always interfered. While we were there back in the spring, I was standing outside pondering the statue and chatting with a friend when a cloud drifted over the sun and there was a break in traffic... I quickly stepped over and squeezed a series of shots. Looking at my cameras preview screen I was practically dancing right there because I was certain I'd finally nailed it. I was even more pleased when I got home and found that I had.
A slightly tighter crop in monochrome, I think this is my favorite version.

On the occasion of her 85th birthday, the Albertina dedicates a large-scale retrospective to the Austrian artist Florentina Pakosta.
In the 1960s, Florentina Pakosta reacted with her drawings and prints to the discrimination of women in the art scene. For centuries, it was the male artist who portrayed the woman as an object or muse. Florentina Pakosta now looks at the man and dissects his facial expressions and body language. Her satirical work denounces patriarchal power structures by overemphasizing male behavior and reversing traditional roles.
The self-portrait also plays a central role in the work of Florentina Pakosta - she sometimes portrays herself serious, sometimes self-confident, sometimes combative. In her series Landscape of goods und Masses of people, Pakosta expresses the disappearance of the subject in capitalism. From about the mid-1980s, Florentina Pakosta turns away from the black-and-white and figurative works and turns towards the painting and an abstract language of forms. To this day, arise cycles of characteristic, geometric bar images.
The exhibition can be seen from 30th May to 26th August 2018.

An outstanding drummer, Tony Allen, not unlike his former associate Fela Kuti, is one of the most accomplished masters and trailblazers of Afrobeat. Born in Nigeria, he honed his musical craft in the country of his origin, drawing on traditional African rhythms, which he fused with funky, jazz and reggae. At present, Tony Allen is an international star, an undisputed personality of the world music scene – his albums are sold all over the world, while he is a regular collaborator of top stars, including Jimi Tenor and Damon Albarn. It is the leader of Blur and Gorillaz that is a guest performer on “Film of Life”, Allen’s latest offering. “Go Back”, their joint single, became a top-charting tune in many countries. For quite some time now, Tony Allen has been a resident of Paris, from which, accompanied by his superb orchestra, he will travel to Lublin. This outstanding drummer will present both the hit songs from his latest album as well as older compositions. Undoubtedly, Tony Allen’s concert in Lublin guarantee a high-octane premium quality performance, becoming one of the key events of the 2015 Festival.

Mickey Leland research associate Julia Lauterbach working in the lab with mentor Candice Ellison. Julia is working with the Energy Conversion Engineering Division at NETL studying Engineering/Environmental Science. Her project is the development of Microwave-specific Catalysts for Methane Pyrolysis. This project will study the impact of specific physical properties of solid oxide catalysts on their conversion efficiency
of methane to hydrogen and solid carbon products via microwave-enhanced methane pyrolysis. Specifically,
complex metal oxides with an AxByOz formula will be synthesized in the lab with varied concentrations of transition
metal substitutions. The materials made will be characterized for microwave-specific properties (i.e. dielectric,
magnetic) before being tested in the reaction. A potential correlation of these properties to the reaction and
product selectivity will be explored.
The participant will learn about alternative energy sources, like RF fields and microwaves, and how the properties of
various materials impact their interaction with the electromagnetic fields. Further, they will learn how to prepare
and characterize these materials to develop a correlation between synthesis method and microwave-related
properties. Finally, they will have opportunities to develop their written and spoken communication skills about
their findings to other researchers.
