About 100 years ago, some attenders at the Quaker adult schools used to apply for associate membership using this form. There were a number of reasons for this not the least being the perception that to be a Friend, one needed to be rich and the working-class attenders at the adult schools were certainly not that.

The cockle sheds at Leigh will forever be associated with one of the tastes of Southend, cockles and whelks ! Love em or Loath em they are as much a part of Southend as the Pier.

Old Leigh has had a reputation in the past for smuggling (as must every old fishing port in England!) and rumours persist of Tunnels from under one of the old pubs to the church at the top of the hill !

You want romance well in 1255 it was the scene of Royal Intrigue and romance, when Princess Beatrice (no not that one!) attempted to elope with Ralph de Binley , anyway after a tip off they were caught at Leigh strand and de Binly's eventually sentenced to banishment from the kingdom . The tale ends with Princess Beatrice stood on Leigh Wharf as her lovers ship sails away down the Thames.

Today Old Leigh sits as a separate community beyond the railway line which while almost destroying it in the early 20th century has today allowed it to develop on a different timeline to the rest of Southend.

Anne Vardo-Zalik, associate professor of biology, and Greg Lutz, a Penn State York biology major, conducted research over the summer thanks to an Erickson Undergraduate Research Grant Lutz received. Lutz’s proposal is entitled “Exploring the Physiological Causation of Parasitic Host Manipulation.” The $3,500 grant allowed the duo to research the findings that parasites have been shown to manipulate the behavior of their hosts, which may increase their transmission to their next host. Although this behavioral modification has been documented for multiple parasite-host species, the mechanism by which the parasite achieves this feat is poorly understood. The experiments were performed using the rat tapeworm (Hymenolepis diminuta) and its beetle intermediate hosts (Tribolium confusum and T. castaneum) to determine if the parasite is affecting the beetle’s dopamine signaling. By giving beetles dopamine-related drugs the researchers hope to identify whether or not this pathway is targeted by the tapeworm to alter behavior in the beetle.
