2018 AIAA Associate Fellows Dinner

Associated” was a site specific show in a severely damaged brownstone on 17th Street in South Slope, Brooklyn. Just after noon on 12 November 2010, a boiler exploded at the Associated Supermarket on 5th Avenue and 17th Street, igniting a fire that tore through the block, destroying Open Source Gallery. Next door to Open Source a three family house–the gallery owners’ home–was also rendered uninhabitable by firefighters' efforts to stop the blaze. The exhibition, "Associated", curated by Monika Wuhrer, Raphaela Riepl and Frank De Leon-Jones resurrects the derelict house with projects by 30 artists. Photo by Miho Suzuki

Bennetts Associates have developed a new ‘landmark’ design station for Ealing Broadway in west London for its client Crossrail. Bennetts is working for Crossrail on the designs for 13 ‘surface stations’ in west London including Ealing Broadway. The new brief for the busy station originated after complaints in 2013 that its initial scheme was too limited amid a wider row over Crossrail’s commitment to design quality outside of central London. Since then, Bennetts has been working to revise the scheme. The station now includes a ticket hall twice the size of the existing one, four lifts and a long timber and steel canopy running the length of the forecourt. Crossrail believes this reflects the prominence and importance of the station building. .

The Associated Press repoprts today: "GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip – Israeli jets and ground troops hammered at Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip and Islamic militants fired barrages of rockets at southern Israeli cities Friday, ignoring a U.N. resolution calling for an immediate cease-fire after two weeks of combat."

As with my other photos from an other peace vigil in Fresno, CA. on January 2, I am not posting this to express a "political position" on the crisis in Gaza. I am posting for my "humanitarian position" that urges action to help the innocents who are suffering.

CARE International has responded swiftly to the growing catastrophe, starting on December 27, the day the attack began, with provisions of medical supplies and pharmaceuticals that were in short supply. CARE, along with its partner the Palestinian Red Crescent Society, intends to continue providing emergency medical supplies and winterization equipment like heaters, blankets, and window coverings to families who have had their homes damaged in the bombing. Contributions to help continue this work can be made through the www.CARE.org website and should be sent with a note that the funds are for CARE Gaza emergency response. "

A delegation headed by Associate Professor Preecha Wanichsetakul and Dean from Thammasat University, in Thailand met on May 13 with the Dean and his executive team at John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM), University of Hawai`i to discuss ways to formalize student learning and exchange between the two institutions of academic medicine. Also on hand were two of the newest JABSOM-trained MDs, Dr. Sara Harris and Dr. Alycia Yee (Class of 2013). Harris and Yee traveled to Thammasat University, about 40 miles outside of Bangkok, for their senior electives; working, respectively, in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics.

The two medical schools signed an agreement to continue their cooperative efforts, in a ceremony in the Medical Education Building on JABSOM's Kaka`ako campus. JABSOM Dean Jerris Hedges and Thammasat Dean Associate Professor Preecha Wanichsetakul signed the agreements, along with JABSOM's Dr. Satoru Izutsu, JABSOM's longtime Vice Dean and the force behind JABSOM's global outreach programs.

Also meeting after the ceremony for working discussions were Dr. Roy Magnusson, JABSOM Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs with Associate Professor Wanida Paoin, the Vice Dean for Thammasat University Hospital and Dr. Thana Khawcharoenporn, Physician of Internal Medicine there. Dr. Richard Kasuya, JABSOM Associate Dean of Medical Education met with Assistant Professor Pisit Wattanaruangkowit, Thammasat's Vice Dean for Academic Affairs. JABSOM's Dr. Richard Smerz, JABSOM Director of Student Affairs met with Assistant Professor Panadda Rojpibulstit, Thammasat Vice Dean for Student Affairs and Health Promotion. Dr. Satoru Izutsu, JABSOM Vice Dean met with Thammasat Associate Professor Pakitpunthu Tomtitchong, the University's Assistant Dean for International Affairs.

As is custom, the schools exchanged small gifts. The Thammasat group brought a lovely Benjarong Pottery Bowl. JABSOM logo emblazed mugs filled with edible treats were Hawai`i's gift.

2022 Mickey Leland Research Associate Mychal Amoafo working in the lab with mentor Larry Shadle. Mychal is working on the Advanced Systems Integration Team and his project is Intelligent Sensors for Control. In this research, typical process data is analyzed in real time and used to infer other process factors: information from the associated chemistry and physics that can then be used to improve sensitivity, control, process stability. For example, a flame temperature sensor for the Hyper combustor based upon calculating the adiabatic flame temperature. Once this is calibrated against the process response, then we can determine the real-time equivalence ratios, flows, and heat fluxes. In the thermal energy storage model it will give us the driving force for the energy input and then the wall temperature can be used to characterize the inventory of stored energy. Approaches including PCA (Dynamic or sampled, unsupervised) and neural networks (supervised) will be applied for dimensionality reduction and fault detection. We can force neural networks to do dimensionality reduction by designing encoder (or even an autoencoder) and decoder network. The encoder will reduce the dimensionality and we can analyze this reduced dataset for insight into fault detection. The student may use python to obtain initial results and reproduce in MATLAB if time is still available.
