Time to assemble! From the same website that I got the dough recipe from, I found a recipe for Royal Icing to use as glue for assembling the house. I had some trouble mixing it with the little hand mixer I found in the cupboard--it was so thick, I couldn't mix it on high speed (like the recipe calls for) without overheating the motor.. so I just mixed it on medium speed for an extra long time and hoped for the best.
It was messy to work with (I think mine was too stiff).. but I lined a ton of it on each side of the front and back pieces of the house and stuck the sides between them.. It didn't seem like it would hold, but it did. I caulked the edges with more, and it was sticky enough I didn't even need to hold it while it set.
My pieces didn't fit together perfectly, but a little extra icing took care of that.
I let it set for a few hours, and came back and put the roof and chimney on. I let those set overnight. I was pretty skeptical that any of it would hold--it was thick but the stiffness made it not seem sticky enough. Lo and behold, when I came back to put the roof and chimney on, it was solid like concrete!
