Spined Assassin Bug ~ (Sinea diadema)
The Spined Assassin Bug is well named. An ambush predator that waits for its victim in a section of foliage. I was lucky to catch this guy poking his head out.

These skillful and efficient aerial hunters, also known as robber flies, are a favourite to find and watch.
Medium to large in size, they are active predators of flying insects and will also take web weaving spiders as a meal. Their mouth parts consist of a triangular proboscis which is inserted into prey and dissolved body juices are then sucked up.
Genus Cerdistus, 3cm length.

Possibly Zelus longipes, which is a predator mostly on caterpillars.

The proboscis is folded up under the head now. But every now and then I catch one with a tiny impaled fly or something on it - pretty dramatic...

A couple of assassin flies (Tolmerus cingulatus, ID credit: Henrik Gyurkovics; Diptera, Asilidae, Robberflies). Found last summer in Valmiera (Latvia, August 13, 2019).
