art001e002092 (Dec. 5, 2022) --- On the 20th day of the Artemis I mission, Orion captured the Earth rising behind the Moon following the return powered flyby. The 3 minute, 27 second, return powered flyby burn, committed the spacecraft to a Dec. 11 splashdown in the Pacific Ocean.
art001e001983 (Dec. 3, 2022) The Moon is captured by Orion’s optical navigation camera on flight day 18 of the 25.5-day Artemis I mission. Orion uses the optical navigation camera to capture imagery of the Earth and the Moon at different phases and distances, providing an enhanced body of data to certify its effectiveness under different lighting conditions as a way to help orient the spacecraft on future missions with crew.
Seen here, attached to the third stage of the Cronus 5, is the 3-man capsule and lander that make up Artemis.
From the left after the Cronus 5 stage, is the lunar braking stage - a modified high thrust version of the Artemis service module. This slows the rocket down in a way that can be likened to pulling the handbrake in a car. The braking stage then separates and crashes into the lunar surface.
Then the multipurpose landing/ascent stage kicks in for the last few hundred meters of descent, hopefully allowing for a soft touchdown on the moon. (It's worth noting that the moon in this game has half the gravity of Earth's, so there's a little more wiggle room here.) After surface operations are finished, the multipurpose stage takes off to boost the spacecraft on its way back home. The L/A stage then separates and the Artemis command and service module finalizes maneuvers for the return journey.

Following a successful perigee raise maneuver and translunar injection burn, the Interim Cryogenic Propulsion Stage (IPCS) separated from Orion and the European Service Module. The ICPS will enter a heliocentric orbit, circling the Sun until it is destroyed. This video was captured by a camera mounted on one of Orion’s four solar arrays.

art001e000255 (Nov. 20, 2022) Taken on the fifth day of the Artemis I mission, this photo showing the Orion spacecraft with the Moon beyond was captured by a camera on the tip of one of Orion’s solar arrays. The spacecraft arrived at its closest approach to the moon the following day, Nov. 21, 2022, coming within 80 miles of the lunar surface.
Technicians are manufacturing NASA's Space Launch System (SLS) core stage for the Artemis II lunar mission at NASA's Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans. The core stage for the deep space rocket consists of two huge propellant tanks, four RS-25 engines, and miles of cabling for the avionics systems and flight computers. All the main core stage structures for Artemis II, the first mission with astronauts, have been built and are being outfitted with electronics, feedlines, propulsion systems, and other components. Technicians are currently wiring and performing functional tests on the avionics inside both the forward skirt and intertank sections. The engine section – the most complicated part of the stage – is in production assembly.

art001m1203251230B (Nov. 21, 2022) – On flight day 6, a camera mounted on one of Orion’s solar array wings captures Earth as it sets behind the Moon ahead of the outbound powered flyby, an approximately 2 minute, 30 second burn that committed the spacecraft to a distant retrograde orbit.

The Flight Readiness Review has deemed the trio GO for launch, marking the dawn of a new era in space exploration.
The first in a series of missions that will return humans to the Moon, including taking the first European, Artemis I is scheduled for launch no earlier than Monday 29 August, at 14:33 CEST.
This mission will put NASA’s Orion spacecraft and ESA’s European Service Module to the test during a journey beyond the Moon and back. No crew will be on board Orion this time, and the spacecraft will be controlled by teams on Earth.
The crew module, however, won’t be empty. Two mannequins, named Helga and Zohar, will occupy the passenger seats. Their female-shaped plastic bodies are filled with over 5600 sensors each to measure the radiation load during their trip around the Moon. The specially trained woolly astronaut, Shaun the Sheep, has also been assigned a seat.
The spacecraft will enter lunar orbit using the Moon’s gravity to gain speed and propel itself almost half a million km from Earth – farther than any human-rated spacecraft has ever travelled.
The second Artemis mission will see four astronauts travel around the Moon on a flyby voyage around our natural satellite.
Mission duration depends on the launch date and even time. It will last between 20 to 40 days, depending on how many orbits of the Moon mission designers decide to make.
This flexibility in mission length is necessary to allow the mission to end as intended with a splashdown during daylight hours in the Pacific Ocean, off the coast of California, USA.
Two more dates are available if a launch on 29 August is not possible. The Artemis Moon mission can also be launched on 2 September and 5 September. Check all the possible launch options on ESA’s Orion blog.
Orion is the only spacecraft capable of human spaceflight outside Earth orbit and high-speed reentry from the vicinity of the Moon. More than just a crew module, Orion includes the European Service Module (ESM), the powerhouse that fuels and propels Orion.
ESM provides for all astronauts’ basic needs, such as water, oxygen, nitrogen, temperature control, power and propulsion. Much like a train engine pulls passenger carriages and supplies power, the European Service Module will take the Orion capsule to its destination and back.

art001e002003 (Dec. 4, 2022) On the 19th day of the Artemis I mission, Orion captures Earth from a camera mounted on one of its solar arrays as the spacecraft prepares for the return powered flyby of the Moon on Dec. 5, when it will pass approximately 79 miles above the lunar surface.
art001e003069 (Dec. 11, 2022) On the day of its return to Earth, Orion’s optical navigation camera captured this image of the planet. The spacecraft splashed down at 12:40 p.m. EST Dec. 11, completing the Artemis I mission and paving the way for future Artemis missions to land the first woman and first person of color on the Moon.
Le site sur lequel s'élevait l'une des Sept merveilles du monde n'est plus de nos jours qu'une cuvette marécageuse. Suivant les années et les saisons, les mares sont plus ou moins grandes. La plus grande forme un petit lac peu profond qui recouvre dalles, morceaux de colonnes et de chapiteaux. Si d'un point de vue archéologique, il n'y a pas grand chose à voir, l'endroit ne manque pas de charme. Les oies de la ferme d'à côté s'en sont fait les gardiennes. Une cigogne niche sur la colonne, des martinets tournoient au dessus des mares. Celles-ci sont le domaine des grenouilles et de nombreuses tortues d'eau que l'on verra se chauffer sur les pierres. Si on entend des chocs bizarres, ce sont les ébats de tortues terrestres.

On Nov. 16, Orion’s solar arrays are maneuvered in preparation for the perigee raise maneuver to ensure no loads are imparted on the arrays. They are then maneuvered back to point toward the Sun following the burn by the Integrated Communications Officer, or INCO, flight controller.

This high-resolution image captures the inside of the Orion crew module on flight day one of the Artemis I mission. At left is Commander Moonikin Campos, a purposeful passenger equipped with sensors to collect data that will help scientists and engineers understand the deep-space environment for future Artemis missions. At center is the Callisto payload, a technology demonstration of voice-activated audio and video technology from Lockheed Martin in collaboration with Amazon and Cisco. Callisto could assist future astronauts on deep-space missions. Below and to the right of Callisto is the Artemis I zero-gravity indicator, astronaut Snoopy.
