Cascade Canyon is GTNP's best kept secret(lol). Ok ok... it may not be much of a secret but it is one place that you HAVE to take a hike.
The shuttle/hike route is great for anybody who's out of shape, injured or old. If none of these apply do yourself a favor and hike in from the String Lake trailhead. It adds 2 miles each way to the hike but its flat and CRAZY easy with the trail following the North edge of the lake headed south. Its beautiful and will save you the ridiculously priced $15 RT ticket for the shuttle.
Nearly every summer growing up would find my family in the shuttle crossing Jenny Lake along with my Grandparents headed for the short hike to Hidden Falls. As far as I can remember those hikes always ended there with our feet in the water....But the falls are really just the start of the hike with the real gem being the higher elevations of the canyon behind the falls.
Bring some Bear-Spray a bunch of water and a lunch for a day trip or plan an overnighter at Solitude Lake. You can return via Paintbrush Canyon which is found to the North
Ive been chasing this exact bird or some of its progeny for a number of years. These birds are crazy cool. They are really loud, you can hear them coming in from a ways off. This bird dives into the ponds behind our place where it catches small fish, takes them up in the trees and smacks them against a limb until they are either dazed or dead, flips them around and swallows them head first and whole.
I try to keep my camera with me most of the time because of moments like this. While driving I found this cool Ostrich taking a bath in the road.
I've spent a little bit more time this year trying to learn some of the different types of flowers that we are encountering in the mountains. I had often seen these large fields of flowers and assumed them to be "Sunflowers" but after a bit of research I am pretty sure(let me know if I am wrong) that they are known locally as "Black Eyes Susans", scientific name: Rudbeckia hirta. It is the State flower of Maryland and has some medicinal uses(the roots can be used to boost immunity and fight colds).
Last night Kira and I had a "date night" after my mom volunteered to watch our youngin'.
With most of the evening on our hands we took the tram at Snowbird to the top of Hidden peak to catch the sunset and have a few beers.
After the sun had set we donned our headlamps and spent the next few hours hiking down in the dark to the Snowbird center where they were showing Jurassic Park on the side of a building.
If thats not the perfect date I don't know what is!
Did you hear the angels above the tree?
No major editorial manipulation except for texture use and color corrections.

I had not processed wildlife images in this format until now.
A new beginning then with the GLH Art Decor series.
I have to admit that I don't own a softbox and have been using a taped-up bed sheet as my light source. Its cheap but I do like the "broadness" of the light that I'm able to get with it.
