Risk-taking architect has to sell firm in fall from grace. One of Britain's most celebrated architects, Will Alsop, was forced to sell his business yesterday after being refused work in Britain because of what he claims is an increasing aversion to risk-taking. Six years ago Alsop won the building of the year award for his box-on-stilts Peckham library, in south-east London, but yesterday he complained of being blocked from designing schools and hospitals in Britain.

This is a photograph of a Birthday Card Competition held by Blue Peter of the BBC in celebration of the 250th Anniversary of the Birth of George Washington in 1982.

Reference: 5417/187/1

This collection of images has been assembled in support of the Washington Heritage Festival 2013.

The celebration of Washington brings together a variety of different themes. Washington is a Town in the City of Sunderland, Tyne & Wear. It is traditionally associated with Coal Industry, and notably known as the home of the Washington Family, ancestors of the First President of the United States George Washington.

However, in 1964 Washington was designated a New Town and drastically changed. With the introduction of new industry such as the Nissan Car Factory Washington experienced a huge redevelopment in both its economy and community.

These Photographs are taken from the Records of the Washington Development Corporation; held at Tyne & Wear Archives. The records document this change in industry, landscape and community in Washington between 1964 & 1988, and consist of many photographs.

Construction will soon begin on a new $122.65-million campus for Emily Carr University of Art and Design. Artist renderings of the interior show how student common spaces will be open and flexible, encouraging exchange between interdisciplinary artistic practices and informal social gatherings enhancing overall university life. The abundant use of glass in open atriums and their proximity to the academic commons and library will encourage transparency and collaboration.

Graduating students from the School of Art and Design at the University of Gloucestershire presented the best of their work at this year’s Degree Show exhibition at the Private View on Friday 25 May.

In line with the show’s theme - New Arrivals – onboard this year are students showcasing work in Fine Art, Photography, Photojournalism, Visual Communications, Advertising, Graphic Design and Illustration at the North Terminal (Hardwick Campus) and South Terminal (Francis Close Hall Campus) in Cheltenham.

The show remains open to the public until Thursday 31 May, from 10am-4pm each day.

Youngartists are drawing up plans for a college showcase after a master class with a top North East design company.

Students from Darlington College BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art and Design visited Darlington-based design and publishing agency Fusion Creative Services to perfect their marketing designs for the ‘Show Off’ event, looking at students’ work throughout the college.

The open day, was held on Thursday May 12, and welcomed local schools and visitors to Darlington College to see students demonstrate their new-found talents.

Skills featured included bricklaying, hair and beauty, computing, plumbing, engineering, fashion, art and design, catering, health and social care and outdoor pursuits all in the one day showcase event.

Art student Constance Grindrod, who worked with fellow students Shaunie Duce, Jamie Hunt, and Ben Hall, on the winning design, said: “We were given a live brief to put together a poster to promote the college’s Show Off event with the entries judged by the college’s executive team.

“All of our ideas were put together and developed to create the final design before bringing it to Fusion to help us develop it further.

“It’s been a real insight into the industry to see how the team here at Fusion work and getting to use some of the new computer programmes that they have to create their designs.”

As well as the winning poster, the students’ work will also be used on event programmes, projector slides and the college website to promote the skills event.

Mike Brough, creative director at Fusion, based on Woodland Road, Darlington, said: “This is the third year we have worked with the college to help the art and design students with their live graphics brief.

“Their original design is excellent, very colourful and youthful, which meets the brief for the target market.

“As it is such a good working design we won’t be changing it too much just helping to fine tune the text and images and show the students how we work with a professional design house.”

Darlington College programme leader in art and design Pippa Eeles added: “The students design was very dynamic and really fitted the college’s ethos of enjoyment and achievement.

“We have currently expanded the art and design course to include a graphic design Extended Diploma Level 3 which will include more live briefs.

“This will allow our students the opportunity to study a wide range of stimulating graphics assignments that will improve their chances of finding employment or going on to study for a degree.”
