Why did this make me think of "1984"? I had to go to the traffic department this week to renew my license. Three queues: one for the form, the next for the eye test, the last to pay. While I was sitting waiting for the eye test I looked around for possible photographs and although I badly wanted to take a picture of the beautiful young woman sitting next to me I could not pluck up the courage to ask her. Instead I noticed this sign and saw how out of date it was and thought it summed up so many things. And sometimes the animals we encounter on the road are a lot more dangerous than these!
Hope your Wednesday has been/is a good one

More than 100 PBSC students pledged to drive safely after participating in Arrive Alive, a nationally-touring program held in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Plaza on the Lake Worth campus Feb. 26. Well, that's a lovely experience. On the way back from friends, past Diepsloot, and we had not one, but two taxis (this is the second, over-taking and then driving through the red light at the Fourways intersection) tail-gating us while we were travelling within the speed-limits (80-100 km/h); not only tailgating on this narrow road towards Fourways, but setting their highlights on bright. You can't pull over, since the road is incredibly narrow, and all you have to the left are deep ditches, with people walking all over the place.
Unbelievable; taxi terrorists.
And of course there was no policing to be seen anywhere; our cops prefers hiding behind bushes. Now that's crime prevention.
Wonder how many other people have experienced this criminal behaviour; and when will this result in a serious accident, if it hasn't already?

Minibus Taxis and Challenges /Threats to Road Safety
The biggest challenge is to make transport safe, efficient and affordable.
Government has therefore taken considerable steps to regulate the minibus taxi industry in the best interests of public safety and to transform it into a more profitable business in which income is derived from a wider basket of income generating enterprises and not just fares.
Taxis are often seen as unsafe and operating in a way that is abusive to passengers.
Illegal operators in the industry have contributed to violence in the industry.
A study done by the Automobile Association of South Africa recorded an annual total of 70 000 minibus taxi crashes which indicates that taxis in SA amount for double the rate of crashes than all other passenger vehicles.
Detailed accident data is not available for this category of vehicle, so there is insufficient evidence to support a clear cause for the number of fatalities in minibus taxi accidents.
Minibus taxis are subjected to much more severe operating conditions than the average passenger car.
Minibus taxis frequently operate at speeds higher than the limit to cut travel time in order to secure more loads or passengers.
While operating at these speeds, usually overloaded, the stopping distance of these vehicles change considerably from the design, usually resulting in fatal consequences.
The pressure is on the driver to meet strict daily requirements of numbers, both in trips made and passengers ferried. This in turn impacted on his/her earnings.
In the ultimate event of brake pad or lining replacement, the driver would purchase the cheapest available as this has a direct bearing on his wages.
Because the minibus taxi industry has grown rapidly in the last decade in South Africa, numerous replacement brake pads and linings are available which are manufactured locally or imported.
Roadworthiness and driver attitude are the most important aspects to address in the effort to improve the safety of commuters in minibus taxis
Government has acknowledged that all efforts involving the minibus taxi industry required a strong consultation process with all stakeholders in the public transport industry.

Still miffed that GP had parked the red car and couldn't remember where it was Travis was bound and determined that he would be able to drive while here in Kingston.
I thought that perhaps he might be able to drive out of the parking garage however, because his feet wouldn't reach the peddles and the option of two drivers in the same seat and seat belt would be hard to explain if we were spotted by one of Kingston's finest I told Travis that it would be best if I drove home.
Besides he and GP had had a pint of squirrel ale at the restaurant and here in Canada, Friends don't let friends drive even if they have had only one. He understood and reluctantly got into the passenger seat and settled back for the drive home.
Make sure you check out his adventure's so far on his own flickr group Travis's World Tour.
If you think you would like to host Travis make sure you sign up on his flickr group. He doesn't eat much and the only cost to you is an envelope and postage to send him onto his next destination.

To the d*ckhead who trashed my stationary car this afternoon... consider yourself flickered.
Every year idiots like this one grace our roads & are a leading cause of road fatalities.
No excuses. Slow down, stop being a complete idiot!
