A fully equipped Bavarian infantryman from Reserve Infanterie Regiment 16.

His cap is the short-lived cream-coloured Bavarian Reserve Infantry cap, short-lived because it too closely resembled the British 1905 service cap which not surprisingly caused some confusion at the front.

His tunic is the M1907/10 Waffenrock with his regiment number embroided onto the shoulder straps. On his back he has rucksack, as opposed to the normal Army backpack. The lack of sufficient numbers of backpacks to equip the troops required the use of both civilian acquired rucksacks and other issue models.

These shoes are among my faves. I find them kinda ugly, kinda fabulous. They are orange and beige and brown leather with an unusal canvas strap that looks like it belongs on an army backpack or somethin'.

21st Birthday Cake by Avril

This cake was very last minute and I completely made it up as I went along. Its so different from my usual girly style cakes and I’m the sort of person who likes to plan cakes out, but it was a nice change for me… and I really enjoyed it.

It all started when my lovely neighbour called round on Thursday afternoon and asked if I could make a cake for her nephews birthday for Saturday. Her nephew is leaving for the army again on Monday and they wanted the cake to be army themed. The message his Dad requested to be placed on it didn’t leave much room for anything else… so after a long think I came up with the idea of the backpack and based the rest of the toppers around it… Apart from the bottles of beer, of course ; )
