On July 29th, one of Mae Sot's overflowing reservoirs was released after six days of heavy rain. Water poured through the center of town, turning one of the major roads (Prasawithi) into a rushing river. Power was lost in some areas for half a day, while running water was lost for nearly 3 days in some parts of town.
Meanwhile, the River Moei--the border between Thailand and Myanmar--also overflowed and flooded the Thai side's border market and caused severe damages on the Myanmar side, slightly downhill of the Thai side. Many people in Myawaddy and further into Myanmar's Karen State are still homeless. Food and water sources have been destroyed or contaminated.
If you would like help residents of Karen State, you can donate to the Emergency Assistance and Relief Team, comprised of Backpack Health Workers' Team, Karen Women's Organization, and the renowned Mae Tao Clinic. Please go to this link for information on bank transfers and funding distribution.
More info:
We'd come a long way from Mae Sot. My Shan friend Bobo's uncle is a teaching monk at a school in rural Karen State, not particularly close to Mae Sot but closer than home in Shwenyaung. He'd crossed the Thai border to stay in Mae Sot for a while, so we could all travel back to Myanmar together. The shared taxi took nearly 6 hours to get to Hpaan, where we dropped off another friend. After waiting until evening, we boarded an overnight bus to Yangon.
Just like when I took a bus from Hpaan in 2011, we arrived rather early at 3AM, and had nowhere to go. The monk had previously taught in a monastery in Yangon so he directed a taxi there. In the wee hours, the young monks welcomed us into an office to sleep; less comfortable than beds but at least I didn't have to be separated for being female. Bobo and I awoke from our nap around 6AM, to the murmur of novices eagerly asking his uncle questions.

Una hermosa escena familiar un sábado en la tarde, todo transcurre tranquilo!!
After a long, slow Saturday, Saad Abdelatif awaits transportation to the Long Island City garage where this smoothie cart will be cleaned and stored overnight--a requirement for all food carts citywide. Saad recently passed one year of living in the US, still possessing only the minimal English necessary to speak to customers. Last year, he bounced from working as a grocery stocker to the smoothie cart to winter employment on a halal foods cart, because the smoothie cart's seasonal permit only covers April through October. This year he's slinging smoothies 6 to 7 days per week, weekdays in east Midtown plus weekend shifts in Astor Place and Times Square, hoping his $100/day salary will provide enough savings to visit his mother in Algeria come winter.

Hi friends! Are you on Instagram? If so, please follow me @nancyc_huang (www.instagram.com/nancyc_huang/) for photos that are about 95% different than what I post here on Flickr. I'm currently working on a long-term project on the stories of immigrant street food vendors in New York, and will be sharing a few of the photos I've posted there. I have a description & essay format on nancychuang.com/streetvendors.html , but I really hope you'll join me over on Instagram for newer images & continuing progress.

Nuestra capital San Juan esta llena de estos nobles obreros del arte!!!
There's a conception that everyone in India is supposed to speak some level of English. While it's certainly easier to communicate than in other Asian countries that don't claim English as one of its national languages, English is still spoken by people who have had somewhat more privilege OR have to deal with tourists somehow. This is my way of explaining that I had no idea what was going on here. There were men wearing marigolds, tilaka (red paste) applied to people's foreheads including mine, a truck blaring music, and dancing.

Beaver pond, Leslie Spit, Toronto.
Not a shining example from this camera and not sure exactly how I messed this one up!
Test roll with my Konica 1 rangefinder made in occupied Japan (1948).
Took me 9 months to finish the roll. Had several blanks and double exposures as I didn't keep record if I advanced the film.
Made in Occupied Japan (MIOJ)
The “Made in Occupied Japan” identification mark is better known to most camera collectors as MIOJ. References to this mark appear often in camera literature dealing with the history of post-war Japan. Aside from the company name and the camera’s serial number, the MIOJ mark was the first post-war foreign mark to appear on early Canon cameras, lenses, and accessories. Early in 1947 the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers (SCAP) issued Decree 1535, stating that all export items must be identified with an engraving “Made in Occupied Japan.” The first MIOJ-marked base plates appeared on early cameras released after September 9, 1947.
