Rich source of archtecture, nice views of the river Rhine: Köln-Bayenthal is a neighbourhood of Cologne, Germany and part of the district of Rodenkirchen. Bayenthal lies on the left bank of the river Rhine, between the district of Innenstadt to the North and Marienburg neighbourhood to the South. The borders to these are defined by the Southern Bridge (Südbrücke) and the Bayenthalgürtel of the Cologne Belt respectively. To the West, Bayenthal borders with Raderberg.

It combines the residential neighbourhoods from adjacent Marienburg with former industrial areas next to the old "Dom" brewery.[1][2] Bayenthal has 8.473 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2008) and covers an area of 1,28 km² (pop.density of 6.620 inhab./km²). The neighbourhood is served by Cologne Stadtbahn line 16.

There's a heavy Spanish influence common here. No surprise there as Pensacola was the site of the very first European colony in what was to become the US, in 1559, predating St Augustine.

I had the enormously moving privilege of sitting in the choir of St Paul's Cathedral in London for evensong. I'm nobody special. I was just in the right place at the right time — carpe diem. I was similary in awe of the monastic chanting from the Basílica y Convento de San Francisco de Lima on Saint Francis Day. We are wise to rationally respond to these things lest we be swept up in the ectasy designed to hold us in the thrall of religious superstition. That aside, there is power and majesty in these places and none more so than here in the beautiful choir of the stunning Lincoln Cathedral.

Lincoln Cathedral got off to a good start not long after the Norman Conquest. Then the roof burnt in 1124. It was rebuilt again. Then an earthquake flattened it in 1185. Undaunted, reconstruction began again with the choir in 1192. As always nothing is really original. Even so, I look on in awe and wonder at something of the 12th century works conserved here. Of course this place is so enormous that like painting the Sydney Harbour Bridge or Edinburgh's Forth Bridge it is never finished. I was most grateful for this simple thing: there was no scaffolding in the choir.
