I went to school here in the 1980's when it was called the Christian Athenaeum/ van Lingen College. It's architect, Evert Jan Rothuizen (1888-1979) apparently changed his name in 1929 from Rothuizen (which translates literally to Rotten Houses) to Rotshuizen (Rock-Houses).

Makes sense, doesn't it?

Tablet made in the studio of sculptors Pierre van den Bossche and Willem Crevels, which was around the corner, at Lutmastraat 271.

This house dates from 1890 and was designed by Eduard Cuypers (1859-1927). It is part of an architectural unit of four houses, as a whole symmetrical and with another tablet at nr. 75, to be seen here.

To the left is Amsteldijk 79, also designed by Eduard Cuypers.

Update, 17 June 2012: the four houses at Amsteldijk 75-78 were designated municipal heritage on 22 May 2012.

Tricky HDR due to movement of 5 x 30s exposures. So had to repair quite a lot of branch movement in post. I was trying for a more natural look than recent HDRs from me, and I think this looks plausible.

The sun was low in the sky as I arrived at Seogwipo Harbor. I parked my car and and made my way over to Saeyeon Bridge, a massive structure that towers over the harbor's boats and administrative buildings. The bridge, opened in 2009, connects the harbor to beautiful Saesom (Bird) Island. Incredible golden light swept over me as I I took a leisurely stroll to the middle of the bridge. My goal for the day was to photograph this fine piece of architecture in the evening. I still had about 90 minutes to to go before dark so I leaned over the railing and watched as the sun set...

As the last remnants of light disappeared over the horizon and the bridge's lights began to turn on, I went down the stairs that twist their way to the ground below. I had walked around the bridge a few days before so I knew exactly what I wanted to photograph.

I started with the staircase I had just descended. Looking up, the staircase made a wonderful spiral pattern to the top of the bridge. I moved on to the underside of the bridge and took several pictures of the impressive length of steel, thick wires, and lights that stretched across the water, a beautiful display of vertical and horizontal lines.

Satisfied that I had captured a wider view of the bridge, I began to focus on little details: The cube shaped center housing another spiral staircase, the gears and levers above it, and the vertical beams of metal that encased everything.

Two hours later I headed back to my car with one more objective in mind. I drove to the other side of the harbor where I could see the bridge in its entirety. A rainbow of colored lights pulsed up and down the center of the structure and the moon had come out and sat lazily above it. I took my final photo of the day, possibly my best, before putting down my camera and just enjoying the view. What a sight!

Hoa Lo jail is in the centre of Hanoi and was built by the French as Maison Centrale in the late 19th century. During the Vietnam War it was dubbed the "Hanoi Hilton" in the West. US Senator John McCain was jailed there among many other US POWs. What remains of it is now a museum. Two thirds of it was pulled down in the 1990s to build Hanoi Towers, two office and apartment highrise buildings visible in the background of this photo.

Mary and The Angel. The Church, in Bourganeuf, rural Creuse, is medieval but the window by Didron of Paris is dated to 1855. Didron was an iconographer, archaeologist and preservationist who founded a factory for gothic revival stained glass in 1849. He was responsible for the spectacular windows of Beauvais Cathedral and also worked in England, providing the beautiful windows at St Mary's in Feltwell, East Anglia. The church at Bourganeuf also contains stained glass by Thevenot.

This is an entrance of Kitara Concert Hall in Sapporo.

After a big weekend, it is not easy to spend Monday at work...

However it was a beautiful day in Sapporo. Maybe today was the hottest of the season.

Yup I love Summer.
