During my travels to Cairo, I encountered a striking urban tapestry: slums and unfinished buildings stretching out as far as the eye could see, their red brick facades interrupted by a concrete ribbon of highway. This haphazard integration of living spaces and thoroughfares is a stark visual testament to the city's struggle with housing and urban planning. Intrigued by this juxtaposition, I delved into the history of Cairo's informal settlements, known locally as 'Al-ashwaiat,' and the social and political intricacies that led to the emergence of highways slicing through residential blocks.
This is a narrative of discovery, not only of the city's challenging present but also of its residents' unwavering resilience and the unspoken social contracts that shape their lives.
