The Scripps Center is a high-rise office building located at 312 Walnut Street at the corner of 3rd Street in the Central Business District of Cincinnati, Ohio. At the height of 468.01 feet (142.65 m), with 36 stories, it is the fourth tallest building in the city, and the tallest added between the building of the Carew Tower in 1931 and the opening of the Great American Tower at Queen City Square – the tallest building in Cincinnati – in 2011. It was completed in 1990, and includes 500,000 square feet (46,000 m2) of office space. The building was designed by Houston architects Hoover & Furr; Glaser & Associates was architect of record. Space Design International was also involved with the building's design.

The headquarters of the E. W. Scripps Company is located in the Scripps Center.

In connection with the 2015 Major League Baseball All-Star Game played in Cincinnati, the upper exterior of the Scripps Center was decorated with a gigantic hat and mustache, giving it the appearance of a 19th century Cincinnati Redlegs player. Despite public support for keeping the decorations permanently, the mustache and hat were removed after the game. Television cameras were also mounted on the building's roof to provide aerial views of the game.

A fisheye shot of the new 'Foreign Office Architects' designed Grand Central Station / Shopping complex in Birmingham, hot off the press, following my trip there for the Photography Show at the NEC.

This is one of a number of shots I took before I was approached by Security who told me I was not allowed to take photos. Having suggested that maybe they should put up some notices to that effect he asked me not to take any more.

I mostly complied with his request........

This could be any exotic location in the world. It is none other than the Art Nouveau town of Ålesund (pronounced o-le-san), situated on one of the small islands perched at the head of the Fjords, off the west coast of Norway. The photo was taken from a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the town, part of which is shown in the photo.

The original town, built almost entirely of wood, was destroyed by fire in the winter of 1904 during the middle of the night, following a freak accident and an untimely gale which swept through the town. Those evacated at a few minutes' notice included prisoners from the town's jail, all of whom duly reported back to base the following morning. Only one life was lost and one house spared, that of a God- fearing family, while 10,000 townsfolk were left homeless.

Drawing upon inspiration from across Europe, master builders and architects between them created the most stunning of towns, in keeping with its iconic picture-perfect location. Laws were also passed decreeing that in future all towns throughout Norway should be built of stone.

Glasgow School of Art - Mackintosh Building

(Wikipedia)

The Mackintosh Building was severely damaged by fire in May 2014.

It is Glasgow's most famous building, often considered the masterpiece of the architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh and built between 1897 and 1909.

Waldspirale Darmstadt Germany

The Austria artist and architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser is said to have once called straight lines “the devil’s tools.”

Hundertwasser designed many buildings throughout Austria and Germany, but the Waldspirale is a loud testament to Hundertwasser’s hatred of straight lines and his allegiance to nature. Waldspirale translates to “wooded spiral,” and that is exactly what it is. The large spiraled building is topped with an incredible forest - beech, maple and lime trees grow on the undulating, twisting roof. Completed in 2000 – the same year Hundertwasser died – the Waldspirale has 105 apartments and more than 1000 windows. Not one of these windows are shaped the same in this “out of line” building, and many have “tree tenants” growing right through them.

At the highest point the building has 12 floors. You can climb to the wooded spiral roof, which includes a cafe and a bar. Hundertwasser’s aversion to the “devil’s tools” is carried to the interior as well; the corners between the walls and ceiling are rounded off in every apartment. The Waldspirale is a testament to Hundertwasser’s organic aspirations and deep love of nature. As he once said, “If man walks in nature’s midst, then he is nature’s guest and must learn to behave as a well-brought-up guest.” The Waldspirale was the last of Hundertwasser’s creations. He died in 2000, aboard the RMS Queen Mary 2 en route to Germany from Australia to view the work. Many more Hundertwasser creations can be seen in Vienna.

About Lajta Béla: lajtaarchiv.hu/az-archivumrol/?lang=en

Lajta Béláról: lajtaarchiv.hu/az-archivumrol/

"His mature work, striving to look beyond the eventualities of the fin-de-siècle and to create a modern yet enduring style is characterised by reducing mass to basic geometrical shapes, arriving at monumentality through the simplicity of form and the refinement of the choice of materials as well as clearly projecting the interior arrangement of the building onto the divisions of the facade. Lajta arrived at simple geometrical monumentality partly through studying historic architecture, so his work often uses abstract allusions to typical elements of the architecture of the ancient Middle East, Greek and Roman antiquity and other historic periods. He never gave up using ornamentation, thus his characteristically transformed, mostly folk art inspired motifs make a significant contribution to the general character of his buildings."

Architecte: Henry Boulan
