Work at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) includes the preparation and testing of lithium ion batteries and lithium/air batteries for vehicle and other mobile applications. As America and other nations look for alternatives to costly and environmentally-challenging fossil fuels, electricity continues to be an attractive energy option. Mobile—or transportation—energy storage will be critical to meet America’s aggressive vehicle electrification goals.

The new SFMOMA ArtScope [sfmoma.org] has been designed for wandering, for the chance discovery of artworks visitors might not have encountered before. The visual browsing tool based on Stamen's Modest Maps tile engine, features more than 3,500 objects from the SFMOMA collection, arranged in a continuous, map-like grid. Users can zoom in on an eye-catching image, search by keyword or artist, or just have a look around, while zoomed views of artworks can even be deep linked.

After the chine flats were completed and some sanding to clean up the scarf joints, a layer of Xynole was laid over the hull. Xynole is a very loosely woven polyester fabric that is very abrasive resistant covering that when whetted out with epoxy is very tough and a waterproof covering for the hull. The blue tape adjacent to the bow is only temporary to hold the material in place until it is wetted out.

Heatersare typically mounted along the perimeter of the space when applicable. Door areas are stacked with extra units, or tube heater burner boxes are located by doors to provide extra heat. Care is taken to avoid violating the published clearances to combustibles with doors in the open position and/or lifts (with cars on them) in the up position. Common applications also utilize tubes located between lift rows (center of the building) or along side a wall with the heat shined inward. Outside combustion air is highly recommended. Lastly, do not place any heater inside of a paint booth

Abstract: This report is an evaluation of the operational and biological phases of the Skowl Arm DDT pilot project. The study proved the operational feasibility of spraying the forests of southeast Alaska from a floating base using both the amphibious PBY plane and a helicopter. The spray coverage obtained with the helicopter was superior to that of the PBY.

The following is an excerpt from the 1963 Report on Game Studies, Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Game Division, Juneau, Alaska:

"OBJECTIVES

To determine the influence of 1/4 pound DDT (dichloro-diphenyl-trichloro-ethane) per acre as used in aerial sprays to control black-headed budworm (Acleris variana) on birds

and mammals in Southeast Alaska.

TECHNIQUES

In June 1963, the U. S. Forest Service, Region 10, con-ducted a pilot project to determine the effectiveness of a 1/4 pound DDT per acre spray application for controlling black-headed budworm populations. Spraying was done on June 21 from a PBY aircraft flying approximately 500 feet above the ground. The U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game were invited to initiate studies to determine the effects of this spraying on fish and wildlife populations. The spray site was in the vicinity of Skowl Arm on the east side of Prince of Wales Island, Southeast Alaska, about 35 miles northwest of Ketchikan.

Three drainages were sprayed however, all bird and mammal investigations were confined to Cabin Creek drainage. Neither funds nor time allowed for extensive investigations of all species which might be influenced. Therefore, efforts were concentrated on the Sitka black-tailed deer, the most abundant big game species in Southeast Alaska, which is usually present in forests where subsequent spray programs may be undertaken." Water, Water Everywhere?

Helping IAEA Member States with Water Resources and Water Security

Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications

IAEA, Vienna, Austria, 21 May 2019

Water security – its availability, quality, management and protection – has become a critical issue in human development and environmental and economic sustainability, particularly in light of global population growth. Sustainable Development Goal #6 includes access to safe water for everyone by 2030. Statistics from the Global Water Institute, however, suggest that 700 million people worldwide could be displaced by intense water scarcity by 2030.

The outreach event

Water, Water Everywhere?

Helping IAEA Member States with Water Resources and Water Security

will discuss the various ways nuclear science and technology can help advance water management – improving water availability, optimising efficiency of water use, treating wastewater in an environment- friendly way and monitoring marine pollution.

Army in Korea celebrates newest citizens

“You have moved to several posts waiting for your application [citizenship] to catch up with you—today it caught up.”

— Kenneth J. Sherman, Citizenship and Immigration Services Field Office Director, U.S. Embassy, Seoul

The Army Family in Korea welcomed 43 new American citizens to its ranks during a naturalization ceremony held at United States Army Garrison Yongsan, Seoul, Republic of Korea, Dec. 15. Thirty-seven active-duty Servicemembers and six spouses of active-duty military members were naturalized as American citizens during the ceremony.

Although this was the first time the newly-naturalized citizens swore the Oath of Allegiance, many of the Servicemembers present had already demonstrated their patriotism while serving in Iraq and Afghanistan before becoming U.S. citizens. Staff Sgt. Francis Manalac, originally from the Philippines, said he started the naturalization process while serving in Iraq. “This is a very special ceremony,” he said. “Today is the culmination of a four-year process.” Staff Sgt. Manalac now calls Chicago home.

“All are being naturalized because of their service,” said Kenneth J. Sherman, Citizen and Immigration Services Field Office Director, U.S. Embassy, Seoul. “They are from 20 countries, on five continents with one thing in common—their service and sacrifice. There are people in this audience who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan—willing to give the ultimate sacrifice.”

Sherman also noted that it is not only the Soldiers and Sailors who sacrifice and endure, but military families as well. That is the reasoning behind a new program allowing spouses of active-duty military members to become naturalized while living overseas, he said. On Jan. 28, 2008, President George W. Bush signed a bill, which was passed by Congress, permitting spouses stationed with their sponsor overseas to pursue naturalization.

The candidates hailed from United Kingdom, India, Jamaica, Russia, Ghana and many other nations from throughout the world. “This is not just a list of countries,” Sherman explained. “It’s the history and the future of the United States. The U.S. is built on immigration--it strengthens every aspect America, from our economy to our culture, to expanding our freedoms.”

“All my life all I’ve known is America,” said Private 1st Class Phinnara Pai, 2nd Infantry Division. “Why not become an American citizen?” Pai said he was once a child refugee from Cambodia.

“Many here today appreciate America, our freedoms, our Constitution, in a way people born there perhaps do not,” said Sherman. Private 2nd Class Tanya Erica Gorham, originally from Barbados, expressed similar sentiments about taking the “rough path” to American citizenship. “I’m glad I can go about achieving it this way to appreciate it more,” she said. “I want to instill in my son that it is a privilege to be born in a country so free.”
