This is the best preserved medieval stonghold in Scandinavia. Built between 1499 and 1506, when Skåne was a part of Denmark.

It was a cloudy, windswept night, but after waiting for an hour, a small gap in the clouds arrived, allowing a few stars and an almost full blue Moon to put in an appearance.

XX w.

Royal Castle, Będzin, June 21, 2018

The stronghold was built by King Casimir the Great in the 14th century. Already in the 9th century a defensive castle existed here, gradually extended. In the 13th century the still-existing bergfried was built, which later was extended with the upper and the lower castle. The river Czarna Przemsza which flows right at the foot of the castle was the boundary river between Poland and Silesia under the Czech reign. The castle burnt in 1616 and again during the Deluge in the mid-17th century. In the 18th century the fortress began falling into ruin, it was partially rebuilt in the 1830s, when an evangelical chapel was located here, later also a hospital, but just in 1849 the castle again felt into ruins. After regaining the independence by Poland the reconstruction efforts were undertaken; the present appearance is the result of reconstructions made in the 1950s.

Seidenweberhaus

Architects Max Sippel / Bruno Trubert* / Rolf Klein / Manfred Oppmann / Otmar Nentwig, 1972–1976

Krefeld, Germany

"Angular geometric shapes like the hexagon seem to dominate the building of the event centre. Floors lie irregularly on top of each other and are supported by pillars. Projections and recesses alternate and create galleries. Concrete panels design the façade and their flattened edges make them almost round. Horizontal bands of windows design the individual floors and give the building a more tranquil appearance.

Scheduled for demolition, however there is a temporary extension to using the current building. There are plans for a new city hall on the site." (www.sosbrutalism.org/cms/15802395#15931369)

"Silk City Gallery

After almost five decades, the Seidenweberhaus has come to the end of the road: the days of the striking concrete block on Theaterplatz are numbered, the demolition is a done deal. But before heavy machinery rolls in, around 30 international street artists use the building as an impetus and inspiration for their work. From Tuesday 20th to Sunday 25th July [2021], they decorate it from all sides as "Silk City Gallery" with murals, graffiti and 3D art.

[...] The farewell to a building is celebrated that has accompanied the city society for a long time. The place lends itself to an artistic exploration, precisely because it so clearly calls for new impulses.

The artists come from Krefeld and the region as well as from countries such as Spain, Italy, Canada, Mexico and the Ukraine."

For the Diesel Nerds out there like myself, the UP 6893 was built as a 4,400 HP "Convertible," before being rebuilt into a legit 6,000 HP AC6000CW a few years after its delivery. Eventually, these went back to 4,400 HP engines when the more powerful ones proved to be problematic. In April 2023, it was rebuilt again by GE into a C44ACM, giving it the appearance you see here.

Honfleur is a commune in the Calvados department in Normandy en.normandie-tourisme.fr/normandy-tourism-109-2.html in northwestern France. It is located on the southern bank of the estuary of the Seine across from le Havre and very close to the exit of the Pont de Normandie. Its inhabitants are called Honfleurais. It is especially known for its old, beautiful picturesque port, characterized by its houses with slate-covered frontages, painted many times by artists, including in particular Gustave Courbet, Eugène Boudin, Claude Monet and Johan Jongkind, forming the école de Honfleur (Honfleur school) which contributed to the appearance of the Impressionist movement. The Sainte-Catherine church, which has a bell tower separate from the principal building, is the largest church made out of wood in France. The first written record of Honfleur is a reference by Richard III, Duke of Normandy, in 1027. By the middle of the 12th century, the city represented a significant transit point for goods from Rouen to England. Located on the estuary of one of the principal rivers of France with a safe harbour and relatively rich hinterland, Honfleur profited from its strategic position from the start of the Hundred Years' War. The town's defences were strengthened by Charles V in order to protect the estuary of the Seine from attacks from the English. This was supported by the nearby port of Harfleur. However, Honfleur was taken and occupied by the English in 1357 and from 1419 to 1450. When under French control, raiding parties often set out from the port to ransack the English coasts, including partially destroying the town of Sandwich, in Kent, England, in the 1450s. At the end of the Hundred Years' War, Honfleur benefited from the boom in maritime trade until the end of the 18th century. Trade was disturbed during the wars of religion in the 16th century. The port saw the departure of a number of explorers, in particular in 1503 of Binot Paulmierde Gonneville to the coasts of Brazil. In 1506, local man Jean Denis departed for Newfoundland island and the mouth of the Saint Lawrence. An expedition in 1608, organised by Samuel de Champlain, founded the city of Quebec in modern day Canada. After 1608, Honfleur thrived on trade with Canada, the West Indies, the African coasts and the Azores. As a result, the town became one of the five principal ports for the slave trade in France. During this time the rapid growth of the town saw the demolition of its fortifications on the orders of Colbert. The wars of the French revolution and the First Empire, and in particular the continental blockade, caused the ruin of Honfleur. It only partially recovered during the 19th century with the trading of wood from northern Europe. Trade was however limited by the silting up of the entrance to the port and development of the modern port at Le Havre. The port however still functions today. On August 25, 1944, Honfleur was liberated together by the British army - 19th Platoon of the 12th Devon's, 6th Air Landing Brigade, the Belgian army (Brigade Piron) on 25 August 1944.[1] and the Canadian army without any combat. en.normandie-tourisme.fr/articles/honfleur-278-2.html

Despite its appearance, this is a 3,000 CU FT pressure differential covered hopper car built by Union Tank Car as UTLX 8024 in 8-1967. It was later owned by Baroid Drilling Fluids Incorporated and ran as BDNX 246 and ended up owned by Watco's SKOL operation. Today it's retired and serves as additional storage at Builders Concrete & Supply Inc. A very rare and unique freight car, I can only hope one day it makes it into preservation.

Summer announces its appearance at RHS Wisley

After the appearance of Via #75 I get get a westbound freight as #383 made an appearance with SD60F 5535 leading.

Looking at these two photos got me thinking about the many photos I have taken from this area. When I first moved to Hamilton in 1986 there was still an open station here for Via trains. That eventually went away and the driveway was blocked off. But you could still get legal access since the Bruce Trail went through on its way between Niagara and Tobermory. However, the trails attracted way too many people who couldn't stay off the tracks so it was no surprise that the trail was rerouted and the former station site is now off limits.

This is a set piece from silent movies and it was usually used in an indoor sound stage in the background to give the appearance of a building in the far distance, on a hill. It was often seen as just a silhouette and it would usually have lights in the windows. It’s made of cast iron and it is very heavy. It probably weighs 500 pounds. It’s now on display on Santa Monica Blvd, in Hollywood, along with some similar set pieces.

Peregrine Falcon / falco peregrinus. East Mill, Belper, Derbyshire. 12/06/22.

'NEWLY FLEDGED.'

12th June marked the day that the two juvenile Peregrines fledged from East Mill. When I arrived mid-morning, one had already gone from the nesting balcony and the other was nowhere in sight. It must have been having a nap because it eventually appeared on the rail of the balcony.

There it remained on view for a number of hours, often flapping rapidly, looking as if it was going to take-off.

At about 4pm - (after several 'will it, won't it' false alarms), it did finally fledge. As so often happens there it failed to gain height and ended up at the base of the building, thankfully unharmed.

Now, some 12 days later, I understand that both juveniles have honed their flying skills and are doing well.

It is a hot spring located in the Upper Geyser Basin. Its average temperature is around 69.8 °C (157.6 °F) and is 23 feet (7 m) deep. The pool was named by Mrs E. N. McGowan, wife of Assistant Park Superintendent, Charles McGowan in 1883. She called it "Convolutus", the Latin name for the morning glory flower, which the spring resembles.

The distinct colour of the pool is due to bacteria which inhabit the water. On a few rare occasions the Morning Glory Pool has erupted as a geyser, usually following an earthquake or other nearby seismic activity. Several entryways have been clogged due to objects being thrown in by tourists, reducing the hot water supply, and in turn altering the overall appearance of the pool.
