... Are Closer Than They Appear

And I'm real happy about that too...

After several rough weeks in dealing with my late father's affair's, Todd and I had a chance to take a couple days off and visit my brother and his family.

The young lady with the wind-blown look is my wonderfully talented niece, Brooke. We had just left the church where I had a chance to see my brother, Phil, perform with the church band, and we were soon on our way to watch Brooke practice with her novice ice skating team. In a few months they will be heading off to Ohio for a competition and should they place, they will be heading off to Spain for the internationals.

I'm sorry I haven't been in touch with everybody lately, but we're still handling a lot of loose ends with my late father's estate. The good news is that there is light at the end of the tunnel and we're finally finding some down time.

Some frogspawn appeared in the pond a couple of days ago. Excited and concerned that it should survive, I positioned some boards over it to protect from frost. I knew that male frogs were likely to be keeping guard over their potential offspring so later I crept up to the pond, slowly lowered my camera to get a shot under the board, and clicked blind. Once I got it up on the screen, I was delighted to discover that indeed our frog was in attendance of his multi brood. I loved his camouflage and steadfast devotion.

Appeared to be in use as a handyman car of sorts, although it was impressively clean for that!

A not too shabby 205k recorded at last MOT test.

"The Garden of Vulcan" is a garden cabinet created by the British landscape architect Tom Stuart-Smith, in which the vegetation was supposed to organise itself after sowing seeds. Over the years, the plant carpet became increasingly lush. "First, plants grow that are flexible and adaptable. Later, trees grow and animals can live in their shade. The animals create a network of trails in the new, lush vegetation. Only then do huts appear.

English landscape architect Tom Stuart-Smith describes the vegetation and colonisation process of the earth. Of course, man could not take over the landscape without outside help: He was helped by the Roman god Vulcan, whose history provides the design concept of the garden. Immerse yourself in the world of mythical fire and experience an extraordinary abundance of flowers of all colours." This description, though greatly abridged by me, comes from the homepage of the Gardens of the World.

A new mural has appeared on the wall of the renovated tenement house. It is dedicated to Jan Kowalewski - a certified lieutenant colonel of the Polish Army, a mathematician, linguist and cryptologist. Founder of the cryptology and radio intelligence department in Poland after regaining independence after the First World War. He broke Soviet codes during the war with the Bolsheviks (1919), for many years he was an officer of the Second Department of the General Staff.

The mural is made with an interesting technique (it reminds me a bit of the Matrix movie). Here, the execution technique is associated with decoding the ciphers.

Studies In The Art Of The Slack Key

by Bill Adams

The Waimea Music Exchange store at Parker Center was filled with the beautiful sounds of Hawaiian music this past Saturday morning as a group of students from Cornell University participated in a slack key guitar lesson taught by the Big Island's own Don Kauli'a, whose album "Sweet Wahine" was nominated for a 2008 Grammy Award.

The students are enrolled in Cornell's Earth and Environmental Systems (EES) Field Program. A 5-month course which spans the entire spring semester, students engage in field, class and laboratory studies focused on the various ecosystems of our Hawaiian island chain and of Hawaii's history and culture.

Led by Professor Dr. Alexandra Moore, the EES Field Program is based out of Waimea and hosted by the Hawaii Preparatory Academy. The students' living quarters is the 8-bedroom Waiaka House near the main campus of HPA.

Dr. Moore explained, "The students are immersed in studies geared towards "Kumu Pa'a I Ka 'Aina, which translates to 'Knowledge and understanding that comes from the land.'"

The stated mission of the EES Field Program is "To inspire stewardship of the Earth through first-hand experience with the power, and fragility, of Earth's interconnected systems."

Upon completion of the EES Field Program, students will achieve 18 credit hours from courses such as; Field Study of the Earth System, Biogeochemistry of the Hawaiian Islands, Field Study of Marine Ecosystems, Internship Experience, and an Introduction to Hawaiian History and Culture, which included Saturday's slack key guitar lesson.

The Program stresses the importance of respecting the Hawaiian ancestral lands and to give something back to the community by engaging in a variety of service learning (in class) projects and local volunteer opportunities. Students are also encouraged to explore ways in which they can contribute to the well-being of their adopted community.

Before Saturday's lesson began, the students were able to briefly meet and chat with another famous Big Island slack key guitar master, Sonny Lim, a 2007 Grammy Award winner for his work on the album, "Slack Key Guitar Volume 2".

Participating in Saturday's guitar lessons were a diverse group of five Cornell University students; Hannah Kubica, a junior from Little Falls, New York, Keisuke Irie, a senior from Bergen County, New Jersey, Matt Connelly, a sophomore from Syracuse, New York, Kourtney Reynolds, a senior from San Diego, California and Tyler Huth, a sophomore from Boston, Massachusetts.

More information about Cornell University's EES Field Program can be found on the Internet at www.geo.cornell.edu/hawaii.

This black-and-white image depicts an elegant woman seen from behind, standing on a train station platform.

She is wearing a long dress and holding a handbag.

Her hair and dress appear to be swept by the air displacement caused by a high-speed train passing on the left, visible as blurred lines that emphasize its rapid motion.

The background highlights the metallic and geometric structure of the station, with intense light at the end of the platform, creating a dramatic and dynamic atmosphere.

What appear to be Autumn leaves swirling around this squirrel are the seed sail bracts of a lime tree. This year our trees seem unusually stressed and acers and limes in particular aborted their seeds long before maturity.

This scene appeared absolutely uninteresting to me in the summer when all the plants were covered in green leaves. But as often when most of them has fallen, much more structure and character is unveiled. Love the shots with thousands of sticks, as it remembers me to pencil strokes. And for sure, the red color complements wonderfully the white snow.

The man who appears soldering in this image is a Syrian discus champion !!! He dreamed of the Rio Olympics and had the level to go to ... Instead he ended up in a Refugee camp in Northern Greece, with no rights or freedom ... The continuous solidarity of the people who have flocked to these refugee camps have made possible some small miracles. One of them was building a gym for all ... Qusai started soldering an iron, then another, then another ... And he got it.

The sun appears briefly across the limestone of Feizor. A place with history and atmosphere. It's a wonder this shot happened at all, really. Firstly, getting up for sunrise is still an effort..... The wind was fierce and it had, moments before, blown my camera over, smashed the lens hood and unknown to me, had knocked the camera onto manual focus. So it was luck that this appears to be in focus. A difficult exposure, and the tree was blowing so wildly that it appears to be moving, even in a still! Thanks for the new location Steve!

A total of 6 railfans wait out the night for the star of the show to cross Sherman's Creek. At approximately 1:22am 10N finally appears in a blaze of flashes.

This ice appearers an old wood, in the wood need to be a special fungi that makes lots of small fissures by living from the wood . If temperatures fall slightly under 0° and humidity is high water out of the fissures makes crystals on the surface, the fungi produces gas by digesting the wood, that more water comes out the fissures and push the existing crystals forward and forward and make this fine structure

Suddenly appearing in the same tree as Mabel left just over 2 years ago this owl appeared this week and has the same behavior. Sits outside in daylight and is not bothered by people and dogs passing by.

Appears to be Lark Sparrow singing three-part harmony on the rail at Coon Bluff, Tonto National Forest, alongside the Salt River.

Appear worryingly scarce locally again this year. At least there might be some for next summer.

it appears to me that the bird on the left is begging for a meal from the (parent?) bird on the right. This is the only time I can recall seeing this behaviour by a heron after fledging the nest.

In my condo complex berries form on the lantana plants in time for Christmas. This was not the case though for the last two years when there were no berries. This year though I see the little wonders. They are not yet this color but I hope they will be soon. This image is from 2013.

A spectacular mural that appears on Carlisle’s City West Walls depicting a Celtic god bearing down on a Roman soldier.

The giant deity is known as Belatucadros and was worshipped in Celtic northern Britain from around 750 BC to 12 BC, particularly in Cumberland and Westmorland.

In the Roman period between 388 AD – 400 AD, he was identified with Mars and appears to have been worshipped by lower-ranked Roman soldiers as well as by Britons.

Well, Cat has decided to honour me with his majestic presence at meal times. Now to catch him early enough in the am to get him into a carrier and off to the vet for a full health check..

I have put an anti-flea collar on him, but he needs worming and vacinating. I am no fan of flea collars, but he was so full of them that it was the easiest thing to do.

And he is not entering my house until that stuff is sorted.

Colors appear oversaturated in the aspen, which is caused by them turning slightly from yellow to brown and the rainy, cloudy weather. The oversaturation from the x-trans sensor is often noticable in these conditions. Sometimes I like it, sometimes I don't.

Edit: replaced with LR version no color changes to RAW.

I am in the process of having a second Harley Quinn pullip made, this one inspired by how she appears in the Arkham Asylum game. Requiemart customized the pullip for me now I just need to find the perfect wig and commission her outfit. Until then she shall masquerade around as the nude super villain the Streak.

A large and conspicuous waterbird, the cormorant has an almost primitive appearance with its long neck making it appear almost reptilian...It is often seen standing with its wings held out to dry. Regarded by some as black, sinister and greedy, cormorants are supreme fishers which can bring them into conflict with anglers and they have been persecuted in the past...The UK holds internationally important wintering numbers...

EXPLORE is Flickr's way of showcasing the most interesting photos within a given point in time -- usually over a 24 hour period.

Flickr receives about 6,000 uploads every minute -- That's about 8.6 million photos a day! The conventional English translation appeared in John Heywood's collection of Proverbs in 1546. Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable also credits Erasmus, and relates it to other Latin proverbs, Planta quae saepius transfertus non coalescit, or Saepius plantata arbor fructum profert exiguum, which mean that a frequently replanted plant or tree (respectively) yields little fruit. It appears that the original intent of the proverb saw the growth of moss as desirable, and that the intent was to condemn mobility as unprofitable. The contemporary interpretation has turned the traditional understanding on its head.

Erasmus's proverb gave the name "rolling stone" to people who meet this description.

What would i do without Wickipedia!?

Anycheese, more interestingly, this is Wistmans Wood. A magical and enchanted woodland full of knarly, twisted, stunted Oak trees and mossy granite boulders. I have been here many times, never before with camera. It is soooo difficult to get a composition. The woodland is thought to be one of the few remnants of ancient woodland on Dartmoor dating from prehistoric times. Apparently the wood is haunted by a pack of Yeth hounds and it is from here that they start their wild hunt across the moorland. They follow their master, who may be the Devil, Odin, or any number of spectral huntsmen on the search for souls across the moorlands. The dogs are described as jet-black in colour snorting fire from their nostrils. Coooool! Didnt see any though.. I will go back on a full moon and really take some shots.
