Monday, August 23, 2010 Song of the day: Say Anything “An Insult to the Dead”
Today I had a huge burst of inspiration/appreciation for the many different art forms in my life. It started with the music that is dear to my heart. Say Anything, which if you have read any of this blog or have met me even just one time in your life, you know that they are my favorite band of all time. I feel like “favorite” doesn’t even stress enough how much I love them. They have been a huge part of my life ever since I ‘met’ them back in 2005. I have no idea why they’re my favorite. It may be their bizarro, genius, twisted lyrics or their jammin’ beats that you can’t help but rock along to... Seriously, their music is amazing. When I don’t have access to my iPod, I MISS them. When I don’t listen to at least one of their songs a day, my day isn’t quite right. This may be called an obsession, and I don’t care. I just really, really love their music. This whole burst of appreciation for the band called Say Anything came from an update Max Bemis (lead singer of the band) posted regarding ‘the future of Say Anything’. The first 4 minutes I was reading it, I thought that they were saying that they broke up. It was terrifying! I can’t imagine not having any more new Say Anything music to experience. When I first got my friend Erin into them, I was so jealous of her for being able to experience them and get to know them. It is SO fun getting to know Say Anything. SO FUN. To not be able to get to know another one of their albums would have been pretty devastating to my music world. Blah blah, now I’m rambling and am probably sounding pretty crazy. But haven’t you ever had something in your life that you love so much!? I am so thankful for the existence of Say Anything because they have made my life so bright. Cheezecheezecheeze.

Anyways, to move on from my sap of the day... I bought a pot for my cactus because the pot it was in crashed to the floor mysteriously and broke. Now my cactus is sitting in a giant measuring cup waiting to move into its new home. So anyways, this new pot. I’m in the process of painting it. The above picture is one side of the incomplete pot. I will definitely be adding more to it, but I wanted to get day 36 outta the way. I can’t believe I’m on day 36!! It’s so exciting, even though I’m ONLY on day 36. haha. It all depends on your perspective.... already day 36, only day 36, cup half empty, cup half full, who the frick drank my beer? You know, it’s all about perspective....
It’s funny that in 36 days, this is my second picture with a pot on my head. Maybe I’m actually lacking inspiration as opposed to feeling inspired. I was looking through my 365 with my friend Emily and she was telling me that I’m creative (one of the best compliments I can ever get) and she looked at my day 1, where I’m in front of all of my stuff that I’m moved and I have my African Violet plant on my head. She said, “really. who would think to put those two things together? Pot. Head.” We had a big laugh about that and now I can be called a pot head once again (in the ‘there’s a pot on my head’ sense, not the ‘I’m smoking marijuana’ sense).
Now, please, go and fall in love with Say Anything:::
And PLEASE see them live if you get the chance...
Sat out by these rocks next to Portencross pier with my friend Gavin and my dog Poppy taking star trail photos as we all slowly span through the Milky Way.
Thanks for the use of your flash Gav.
This image, unlike some of the images I took during this shoot, is not a direct copy of any artist’s work. It is more of a piece that was influences by artists: Man Ray’s nudes and how he often incorporated angular shapes with the limbs, Bill Brandt’s Shadow and Light and Edward Weston’s 1927 nudes.
I also wanted to play on the idea of masculinity and femininity. This nude has been objectified, it has no head or any particularly identifiable features. It is often women in art, I have found, that are objectified, but the hairiness of the body challenges this. It suggests masculinity, but with the increasing female body love and a rejection of wanting to shave religiously like society tells women they have to it could easily be female. (see www.baretobush.tumblr.com)
I asked the model to tense the bicep to represent strength, and if the viewer perceives this body to be female then the muscle signifies the growing strength of women; of feminist movements and of women striving to achieve equality, of becoming more independent of men and becoming their own person and not the property of another.
Another day to myself, and a long overdue outing for this remarkable Collectif skirt. My old green version of the same was favourited recently - I only wish I still had it. However, this and the currently owned red one more than make up for its absence.
