St Nicholas, Islip, Northamptonshire
The Northamptonshire town of Thrapston spreads across the River Nene into Islip, the two connected by a lovely medieval nine arch bridge, which I cycled across, and within a few minutes of leaving Thrapston church I was at Islip church, which like its neighbour was open. This is a splendid church, at the top of the hill. Aisled, clerestoried and spired, and in every way taller and grander than Thrapston. Inside, you can see that it was once in the Anglo-catholic tradition, and there are still remnants of this. Again, good gargoyles outside.
