Union Pacific railfan round trip excursion train led by oil burning FEF-3 class Northern 4-8-4 steam locomotive # 8444 (aka: 844) is stopped on the main line at a location between Denver and Sterling, Colorado, July 1980. Numerous crew members and employees are shown in this scene. Do believe at this stop that water was supplied to the tender.

Penn Central blue & gold American Railroads 1869-1969 painted GG-1 # 4902 leads a westbound main line passenger train past tower SS38 at Stamford, Connecticut, 1970. This was back in the days when various colorful paint schemes were applied to the GG-1 fleet (former Pennsylvania Railroad), which in turn provided interesting scenes. It is still good to observe motors operating on the former New Haven electrified right-of-way, even though they are of foreign railroad origin.

This photo image capture was taken by Bob Hughes, a tower operator at SS38.

Blue Ridge Southern Railroad long hood end of EMD SD40M-2 locomotive # 4202 is seen in the maintainence & service area of the yard at Canton, North Carolina, 9-16-2016. It appears that on this stub end siding there is pit area situated under the locomotive to perform required work.

New Haven Railroad Brill 1927 Doodlebug 9108 gas electric car and a gas electric trailer is seen at a station during the winter, ca mid 1930's. The horn and bell were offset from the original front mounted position, along with a standard coupler and draft gear being installed as a modification so that these gas electrics could haul trailers. Gas Electric 9108 lasted in service into 1951 operating on the West Medway-Needham Junction run, and was the last gas electric in service, but was retired in 1952. These gas electrics servied on most of the branch lines over the years that required passenger service and were quite good at doing so.

New Haven Railroad boxcar 31519, a 30000 series box car of 6,000 ordered in 1941 by the railroad, is seen in a yard in Providence, Rhode Is, 1956. Forty Foot Box Car 31519 class XM was built by Pullman Standard in the group of cars 31000 to 32999 in 1944. During the 1950's a good number of this series of boxcars were sold to a leasing company, and they were refurbished, then leased back to the New Haven Railroad wearing one of the McGinnis era paint schemes.

Penn Central ALCO S-1 # 9494, former New Haven Railroad switcher, is seen along a platform at New Haven Union Station, 1970. Certain trains were still handled as they were back in the day, with cars being transferred to other trains and a few locomotive changes were still being made when the FL9 were not in charge and electric power was being used between New York City and New Haven. The car seen first on the train is a former Pennsylvania Railroad car.

Santa Fe (ATSF) EMD SD45 locomotive 5598 & three additional SD45's are seen leading a manifest freight train on main line through Cajon Pass, California, ca early 1970's. This was modern heavy main line locomotive power back in this era with 14,400 hp being provided to the train. On the right side of the main line is a siding, and on the other main line track is a Rio Grande TOFC passing by.

Denver & Rio Grande Western westbound eight car Rio Grande Zephyr led by EMD F9A locomotive # 5771 and two F9B locomotives heads around a main line curve and under a highway overpass bridge in Utah while on its way to Salt Lake City, Utah, Summer 1980. Don't recall the reason for the three tracks in this location, unless one was for a long double ended siding, or it was for another branch line that joined the main line. All of the track appear to be constructed to the same standards.

NS EMD SD40-2 locomotive # 6107 & another lead a manifest freight train southbound across a curved main line deck bridge, that's approximately 40 miles north of Chattanooga, Tennessee, October 1987. Further back in the train's consist is TOFC equipment. This photo was taken while I was out and about chasing the N&W steam locomotive # 1218 that was leading a railfan excursion train. The Fall leaf changing colors were starting to standout among the trees. You can see in the lead locomotive the engineer and another crew member, perhaps the conductor. In the cab of the second locomotive you can see another employee riding in the engineers position.

Canadian Pacific Railway Montreal Locomotive Works 4-6-2 Pacific steam locomotive # 2581 leads a main line passenger train in Canada, early 1950's. Steam locomotives were still operated in Canada through most of the 1950's.

New Haven Railroad westbound manifest freight train is operating on an express track while being led by EMD GP9 # 1218, FM H16-44 # 1609 & ALCO FA-1 locomotives which is about to pass by tower SS38 at Stamford, Connecticut, winter 1968. This train could almost be called The Snow Cone Special with all of the snow seen on top of the boxcars during the winter season. An old round roof MUT is situated to the far right in the background and a one car eastbound passenger train can be seen in the distance with a two car consist. Bob Hughes was able to take this photo form his tower location.

New Haven Railroad FM H16-44 # 1610 leads a westbound work or wreck train past tower SS38 with the Maybrook D-6 derrick included along with a caboose at Stamford, Connecticut, 1968. The 150 ton capacity Maybrook derrick D-6 was built in 1925 as a steam derrick, but in 1954 it was rebuilt and dieselized. It is also nice to see a class NE-5 New Haven Railroad caboose # C586 within this train's consist.

This photo scene was captured on film by Bob Hughes from his tower SS38 window.

Penn Central ex New Haven Railroad FL-9 locomotive # 5010 leads a short eastbound passenger train on a platform track near tower SS38 at Stamford, Connecticut, 1972. On the right the traffic on highway I-95 is very light but it sure didn't stay that way. In the background is a small portion of the city of Stamford. The first two coaches seen on the train were originally roomette sleeping cars built by Budd, however; later the Pennsylvania Railroad rebuilt many of these cars into coaches. It appears that the engineer is waving at Bob from his cab window. Bob Hughes took this photo from tower SS38.

New Haven Railroad EF-4 class motor # 309 with a westbound manifest freight train, along with the fireman waving at Bob Hughes, is passing by tower SS38 on an express track at Stamford, Connecticut, 1968. From Bob's perch up in the tower he has a great location for observing and photographing trains.

Denver & Rio Grande Western eight car Rio Grande Zephyr led by EMD F9A locomotive # 5771 and two F9B locomotives heads westbound along the main line to Salt Lake City while in the mountains of Utah, Summer 1980. At this time the D&RGW was not part of Amtrak and the Denver Zephyr was still owned and operated by the railroad. The train was in very good condition and provided full dining and lounge car services along with very comfortable seating for the coach passengers. On this trip I made a scenic photo adventure covering all areas of the trip detailing the mountain countryside scenes along with various train scenes. Notice the high exhaust stacks on the diesel locomotives that are actually spark arrestors.

Denver & Rio Grande Western westbound Rio Grande Zephyr, led by EMD F9A locomotive # 5771 and two F9B engines, is seen rounding a portion of a main line "S" curve that's along side of a river or stream in Colorado, Summer 1980. The weather conditions for the westbound trip were much improved over the eastbound return trip the following day.

New Haven Railroad EMD GP9 # 1210 & ALCO FA-1 # 0401 lead freight train NH-2 on an express track, while GE EP-5 # 371 leads a mail & express train on a platform track at Stamford, Connecticut, 10-18-68. A old "Seagram's 7" ad sign is to the right. You can observe the triangular configured catenary used in this area of the railroad.

This photo came from my collection of New Haven Railroad negatives, however; the photographers name is unknown.

Penn Central diesel electric locomotives EMD SW1200 # 9195, ALCO RS3 # 5482 & EMD GP9B # 3808 are seen in the former New Haven Railroad Cedar Hill Yard at New Haven, Connecticut, 1972. In the back ground other locomotives such as EMD GP9's and GE U25B's are seen. The catenary has been long gone since the New Haven Railroad days of the late 1950's and early 1960's, and the yard is just a shadow of itself by this time due to the removal of numerous tracks. Bob Hughes was able to photograph this view I believe from one of the various overhead walkways that were situated in the yard area. Notice that you can clearly see the engineer in the cab of the EMD SW1200 switcher in the bright sunlight. Deep in the background you can see one of the old roundhouses.

New Haven Railroad GE U25B # 2511 and another U25B are seen leading an eastbound manifest freight train on express track while passing the station at Stamford, Connecticut, 1968. The first group of gondolas appear to being carrying scrap materials. Bob Hughes took this photo from ground level near his tower SS38 location.

New Haven Railroad I-2 class 4-6-2 Pacific steam locomotive # 1346 with its short local freight train heads to the main line in Connecticut, ca 1948. If you notice there is a low clearence tell tail hanging over the train to indicate a an on coming low clearence obsticle ahead. There is also a block signal bridge seen in the background. Notice the fireman leaning out of his cab window. Notice that above the pilot beam on the locomotive there is a mounted ATS control box.

Penn Central black painted EMD FL9's # 5010 & # 5015 are seen leading a westbound passenger train that is about to pass tower SS38 at Stamford, Connecticut, 1972. These two locomotives appear to be recently painted due to their over all good condition. You may note the fireman seen in his cab window. Bob Hughes captured this image on film from his tower location.

Metro-North former New Haven Railroad Pullman-Standard lightweight stainless steel MU coach 4432, along with others are seen on storage platform tracks at New Haven Union Station, New Haven, Connecticut, 1979. The last of these Pullman Standard lightweight stainless steel MU's (aka: Washboards) were taken out of service in 1976, once Metro-North had the required number of replacement M-2 MU cars.

Penn Central ex Pennsylvania Railroad GG-1 motor # 4877 is seen leading a westbound mail-express-baggage train on the former New Haven Railroad right-of-way past tower SS38 at Stamford, Connecticut, early 1970's, Bob Hughes Photo. In the previous New Haven Railroad days a good portion of the mail-express-baggage trains were operated during the night hours.

Santa Fe 3400 class Pacific 4-6-2 oil burning steam locomotive # 3427, is seen stopped with its passenger train at a station platform, ca late 1930's. It appears that the engineer is oiling his steed, while the fireman is filling the tank with water, as the baggage handlers are seen working in the background. Most steam locomotive in the 3400 class were eventually rebuilt by Baldwin starting in 1936 and were greatly modernized during the process, however, this locomotive has not yet been rebuilt. Check out the stack extender, a Santa Fe special feature that was applied to numerous steam locomotives.

Union Pacific photo run-by of eastbound railfan excursion train, led by FEF-3 class 4-8-4 Northern steam locomotive # 8444 (aka: 8444), at a location between Denver and Sterling, Colorado, July 1980. This was a same day round trip from Sterling back to Denver, Colorado. Am at a angled diamond with numerous photographers out to capture this action scene. As you may notice there was a large number of railfans or excursion passengers still riding aboard the train which you can see in the coach windows. You may also notice a cab crew member standing with his head hanging out high by the locomotive cab window.

New Haven Railroad ALCO DL-109 DER-1c class diesel electric locomotive # 0710, with its passenger train, is seen while operating between Hartford and Waterbury, Connecticut, ca 1951. Check out the nice looking blade semaphore block signals (ATS) still in operation on this date.

Penn Central eastbound American Railroads 1869-1969 GG-1 # 4902 and its head-end heavy passenger train is seen departing the station and is switching over to the express track while nearing tower SS38 at Stamford, Connecticut, 1970. This was just another one of the unusual locomotives or cars that Bob Hughes captured on film from his tower location.

New Haven Railroad westbound manifest freight train, with a block of refrigerator cars, is led by an EMD GP9 locomotive # 1219, ALCO FB-2 & 2 FM H16-44 locomotives as it is about to pass by tower SS38 at Stamford, Connecticut, summer 1968. Many of the refrigerator boxcars on this train probably came from the northern New England States with produce shipments. Th the left of the GP9 locomotive is a set on round top MUT's and to the right far side is set of P-S lightweight stainless steel MUT's. To the left you can clearly see the highway I-95 highway signs. Bob Hughes was able to photograph this four mixed locomotive set on an express track from his tower location.

Denver & Rio Grande Western westbound Rio Grande Zephyr is seen while climbing a Rocky Mountain grade as it heads west in Colorado, Summer 1980. The train must continue to gain altitude as it crosses the Rocky Mountains. The block signal to the left just turned from green to red as the train entered the block.

New York Ontario & Western Railroad EMD FT diesel electric locomotive ABBA lash-up led by FTA # 805, along with its manifest freight train, is seen while passing through the New Haven Railroad Yard at Maybrook, New York, ca 1950. These EMD FT diesel locomotives were purchased new by the railroad in 1945. On the right in the background a couple of Pacific Fruit Express box cars are spotted, with one having the reporting marks for the Union Pacific Railroad. You may observe the engineer's arm resting in the open cab window. The NYO&W Railroad was shut down, abandoned and liquidated in 1957, due to a U.S. bankruptcy Judge decision.

New Haven Railroad MUTS (multiple unit trains) both of closed vestibule clerestory roof and open platform type are being operated on the New Canaan Branch Line, Connecticut, 1953. One of these MUTS may be operated for a railfan excursion trip, but I don't really know. The leading closed vestibule clerestory roofed car is a combine with a REA-Baggage compartment. The New Canaan Branch Line operates between Stamford and New Canaan with a few stops in between.

New Haven Railroad GE EF-4 motor # 301 & another motor lead an eastbound manifest freight train along with an eastbound Pullman Standard stainless steel MUT car past tower SS38 at Stamford, Connecticut, ca 1968, Bob Hughes Photo. From a tower window Bob was able to capture images of a great number of New Haven Railroad trains while assigned there.

New Haven Railroad GE EF-4 motors # 309 & # 301 lead a westbound TOFC train on an express track past tower SS38 and various morning rush hour commuter MUT's at Stamford, Connecticut, summer 1968. Bob Hughes captured this image from his tower location. You can really see clearly the short blade semaphore block signals in this scene. Only the lead motor # 309 appears to have a pantograph. You can see the fireman in his front window on motor # 309.

Penn Central former Pennsylvania Railroad GG-1 locomotive # 4889, on a dark, dreary and rainy day, leads a long 17 car westbound passenger train along the former New Haven Railroad electrified main line by tower SS38 at Stamford, Connecticut 1971. This train is heading to Pennsylvania Station in New York City and then will head to Washington, D.C.

This image was captured on film by Bob Hughes from his tower location.

Penn Central Ex PRR Metroliner led by car 880 passes through the station eastbound on a main line express track while heading toward tower SS38 at Stamford, Connecticut, 1972. By this time with Penn Central operations along with Amtrak taking over numerous passenger train operations, foreign equipment to the old New Haven Railroad started to show up on on their former rails. Bob Hughes from his tower location was able to capture all of these changes, thankfully.

Denver & Rio Grande Western westbound Rio Grande Zephyr is passing through a yard area as it heads to the foot hills and main line out of Denver, Colorado, Summer 1980. The train passes through a number of yards and commercial areas prior to reaching the main line to head over the foot hills and mountains to reach Salt Lake City, Utah. Highway overpass bridges crossing over railroad tracks are numerous in the Denver area.

Erie EMD early production F3 chicken wire ABBA lash-up with diesel electric locomotive # 706, pulling out yard with its manifest freight train onto the main line at Maybrook, New York, ca 1950. In this scene there is a nice double semaphore blade style block signal on a mast situated on the right side of the train. At this time steam locomotives were still in use operating out of the Maybrook yard.

Penn Central ex New Haven Railroad GE U25B locomotive trio lead a manifest freight train past the station passenger platform tracks at Danbury, Connecticut, early 1970's, Bob Hughes Photo. You may notice that the catenary wire is down on this once electrified line, however, the catenary support structures are still in place.

New Haven Railroad Pullman Sleeper-Lounge car Pine Tree State is seen in the Long Island Railroad's Morris Park yard, Queens, New York City, 1968. This yard has thrid rail in place. The reason why the Pine Tree State is seen in this yard is that during the summer of 1968 the car was leased to the Long Island Railroad for use as a parlor car. There appears to be a Long Island Railroad commuter coach coupled just ahead of the sleeper lounge.

Santa Fe early EMC-GE A & B E-Units # 4L & 4A, that were delivered in April 1938, are seen spotted on a station track lead, Chicago, ca late 1930's. These units were classified as E-1's, and were quite stylish with smooth lines, and produced 1,800 hp each with a total for the two units at 3,600 hp. Back in the B-unit you can see a fireman's, hostler's or other employee's head sticking out of one of the open windows. The locomotives are wearing the famous War Bonnet paint scheme. Check out the old sedan to the left, because it is sure parked close to the nearest track. The location is unknown to me, but perhaps one of the Santa Fe fans may know of the possible location by the background building's name and design. The National Carloaders building seems to be the place to load iced refrigerator cars, because quite a few wooden ones are spotted by the building. There appears to be an individual viewing this scene from a second story window in the National Carloaders building.

Penn Central former New Haven Railroad eastbound wreck train with low profile 230 ton steam derrick New Haven D-100 PC 50150, plus other assorted work cars are seen by tower SS38 at Stamford, Connecticut 1971. An old ALCO switcher is leading this train. Coupled to the locomotive is a caboose, followed by a crew car, tool car, idler flat car, derrick, rigging flat car, tender and a gondola for scrap materials. On the far right is a set of Pullman Standard stainless steel lightweight MU cars.

New Haven Railroad ALCO-Brooks I-2 class 4-6-2 Pacific steam locomotive 1314 is seen at Danbury, Connecticut, July 31, 1938. You can see the fireman in his cab window. This locomotive most likely will power one of the arriving passenger trains led by a motor onthe remainer of a trip to Pittsfield, Massachusetts. In my opinion these I-2 class Pacific's always looked good to me, but would perhaps look better with a larger tender. This photo I colorized.

CSX southbound manifest freight train that is led by five diesel locomotives just crossed a diamond over the Norfolk Southern north-south main lines in Cordele, Georgia, 1990. Today a train such as this would perhaps be led by only two newer locomotives. This location was very active at this time with numerous trains being operated on both CSX & NS main lines, along with a short line operator being present.

Penn Central GG-1 motor # 4924 leads a westbound five car passenger train in the snow on a former New Haven Railroad platform track near tower SS38 and toward the station at Stamford, Connecticut, winter 1970. In the right side background there is what appears to be a set of MUT cars switching onto another siding storage track. Bob Hughes took this photo from his warm tower location.
