This train will be turned at Dunnellon and then return to Tampa. All along this freight train route you could observe people, railfans and photographers watching the train. Some people believe that Florida is flat and that it doesn't have grades, but that's not true at all as you can see in this photo.

New Haven Railroad ALCO C-425 # 2556 & GE U25B lead an eastbound manifest freight train under wire toward tower SS38 in Stamford, Connecticut, 1968. It appears that the fireman is giving a wave to Bob Hughes as he takes this photo. You may also notice that someone is riding deadhead in the cab of the second locomotive. Not to often did you see an C-425 in the lead because they were rough riders and the BLE had an agreement with the New Haven Railroad to not use these locomotives in the lead if possible.

New Haven Railroad GE Streamlined EF-3 class motors 157 & 156, along with others, are seen condemned "C" and spotted on storage tracks at a yard in the Bronx, New York, 1963. Penn Central cab view of an on coming EMD E8 locomotive # 4249 that's leading a passenger train operating on the former New Haven Railroad's Shore Line route in Rhode Island, 1970. The E8 # 4249 most likely has its heritage from the Pennsylvania Railroad due to the tell tail lifting rings situated by the nose door. The cab crew in the E8 is providing a wave to the crew in Bob Hughes's locomotive when he was taking this photo. It sure appears that the fireman has a big smile on his face.

New Haven Railroad GE EP-5 motor # 375 leads an eastbound passenger train out of the station on a platform track and is about pass by tower SS38 at Stamford, Connecticut, 1968. The EP-5 motor sure needs much more than a cleaning because its paint is poor condition. The train appears to have quit a few head-end cars along with a PRR express box car coupled to the motor. The stub end siding on the left are full with Pullman-Standard lightweight stainless steel MUT's. The time of day appears to be early afternoon when Bob Hughes captured this scene from his tower location.

Denver & Rio Grande Western westbound Rio Grande Zephyr is operating on a tight radius main line curve in the foot hills as it makes its way to the front range of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, Summer 1980. With the many main line step grades and the numerous tight radius curves, the trains speed is not all that fast, perhaps around 35 mph as it makes the climb. You really can hear the EMD 567 prime mover working hard. Again too at this location are ties set out on the right-of-way for replacement by the MOW crews.
Penn Central ex New Haven Railroad ALCO RS-3 locomotive # 527 with a State Of Maine - Bangor & Aroostook boxcar and a Manufacturers Railway Company boxcar behind the engine at the Cedar Hill Yard, New Haven, 1969. Penn Central EMD FL-9 locomotive # 5010 and another, both ex New Haven Railroad engines, lead an early morning twelve 12 car westbound passenger train on an express track as they are about to pass tower SS38 at Stamford, Connecticut, 1971. The light levels had to be brought up quit a bit to make this scene possible for display, because this was an early morning train for sure. Numerous MUT's are being prepared for their morning commuter train assignments. In the background you can see all of the vehicles on busy highway I-95, but unfortunately many previously were railroad passengers. Bob Hughes was able to photograph this scene for his tower location.

It appears from the white flags that are mounted by the smoke box, that the steam locomotive is being used for a probable railfan excursion trip. the tender appears to be topped off with coal. the railroad yard is a passenger yard due to all of the steam connections seen on the ground that are used for passenger car heating when no locomotive is coupled to the cars.

New Haven Railroad EMD FL-9 locomotive # 2023 leads two GE EP-5's in what appears to be an eastbound power move as it is about to pass tower SS38 in Stamford, Connecticut, 1968. If this is not a power move then it is a move to transfer two defective locomotives back to New Haven for repair. It appears that the steam generators are all working on each locomotive from the streams of water vapor seen in the air.
Bob Hughes captured this image on film from his tower window.
