Based on the location of the school across the street, I pulled up the New York City Tree Map (a street map of planted trees) and determined that this is a Crataegus, commonly called hawthorn, quickthorn, thornapple, May-tree, whitethorn, Mayflower or hawberry. Of which there are 1,000 or more species. Gracious, that's a lot of names and information.

There's something about this tree (a Thornless
honeylocust) that I admire. No idea what it is, though I look at it through the seasons whenever I happen down 29th Street between 34th Ave/Broadway in Astoria

Overview of 7 Train Upgrades in Queens
The 7 train line, which connects Flushing to Midtown Manhattan, is undergoing significant upgrades in Queens, including at the 33rd Street–Rawson Street station. These improvements are part of a broader initiative to enhance the subway system's infrastructure and accessibility.
Key Upgrades at 33rd Street–Rawson Street Station
Accessibility Improvements
ADA Compliance:
The station is currently undergoing renovations to become ADA-accessible. This includes the installation of elevators, which is part of a larger $6 billion investment in accessibility across the subway system.
Elevator Installation:
The contract for adding two elevators at the station was awarded in December 2023, with work expected to improve access for all riders.
Structural Enhancements
Temporary Platforms: To accommodate construction, temporary platforms have been set up at the 33rd Street–Rawson Street station, along with other nearby stations.
Service Changes:
As part of the ongoing upgrades, Manhattan-bound 7 trains are skipping the 69th and 52nd Street stations through early 2026. Riders are advised to use nearby stations like 74th Street–Broadway and 61st Street–Woodside during this period.
Timeline and Impact
Construction Duration:
The upgrades are expected to continue into 2026, with various phases of work being coordinated to minimize disruptions.
Customer Experience:
These improvements aim to enhance the overall customer experience by providing better access, improved safety, and modernized facilities throughout the 7 train line.
These upgrades are crucial for ensuring that the subway system meets the needs of all New Yorker's, particularly those requiring accessible transit options.

My body can't walk to work, yet...
Tomorrow commemorates month 9 following my last chemotherapy treatment. It's also week 4 of my not walking with the aid of the cane and week 2 of not carrying the back-up collapsible model at all. I'm forever pushing myself forward. No complacency here.
All of that aside, I continue to slowly heal from the Chemotherapy Induced Peripheral Neuropathy (CIPN), a long-term side effect. Which, by the way, had never ONCE been mentioned to me by my OTL (Out to Lunch) medical team as even a "possibility". WTF! They're essentially useless. I don't put up with incompetency, and researched it all myself. Special thanks also goes out to my principal and alternate Health Care Proxies, the first of which resides in the Philippines, and second, here in New York City.
The swelling of my ankles and feet continues to slowly dissipate, as does the numbness of my toes. During 4 months last summer/fall both of my feet had been completely numb, so we are making progress.
It's now summer 2026 and next month shall be my 64th year. I'm proud of myself. I've been through a lot. And I've learned a great deal about my body, cancer treatment, and modern medicine/care. When one goes through something like this, they must be extremely disciplined. Zero deviations. You need to follow it all to a tee.
As is typical, I usually have several irons in the fire at any given moment. That said, following 3 1/2 years, not including the 6 months I needed to stop for treatment, next Tuesday & Wednesday shall be my final oral surgeries at NYU's College of Dentistry, after which I shall have a brand new smile. 😁
It's going to be amazing....
And life is good ❤️

Here's the design for the upcoming new building. I really like it
www.caliendoarchitects.com/project-gallery/31-05-astoria-...
History of the site:
After 40 years in business the Neptune Diner located in Astoria, Queens, NYC served its last meal on Sunday, July 29. 2024. The owners claimed they were not given a chance to renew their lease, because the property will soon be turned into a residential building.
Since 1983, The Katsihtis brothers have owned the building on Astoria Boulevard but not the land, which was sold in 2018 for over $10 million.
The brothers also had a 35-year lease which expired in 2019. But since then, they were not able to come to a long-term agreement with the landlord.

But that's what Long Island City/Astoria needs is another apartment building. It's already so overbuilt, it's ridiculous. Yet they keep tearing them down and building new ones, many of which are luxury rentals. The neighborhood is losing its character to steel and glass.

History of the Starbucks Siren
INSPIRATION
The siren was created by Terry Heckler, a corporate artist and creative partner of Starbucks founder Gordon Bowker. Heckler was inspired by a 16th century Norse woodcut of a two-tailed siren. The siren's hair is similar to ocean waves, a reference to Seattle's (in the U.S. State of Washington) proximity to the sea.
MEANING
The siren is a metaphor for the siren song of coffee, luring people to the brand. The siren's mythical and mysterious appeal is intended to convey the idea that Starbucks seduces coffee lovers. From European myths and alchemy, her two tails represent dualities, such as earth and water, or body and soul
DESIGN
The siren has been updated over the years, but the siren remains at its core. The latest design includes asymmetry, such as a dipped nose on the right side of the siren's face. This was done to avoid making the siren look too perfect.

This is interesting. These frosted glass block windows have existed ever since this building first opened back in 1992. This is a LaGuardia Community College building. They have several buildings in this same area. I'm wondering and extremely curious whether they're planning on changing these windows. No info about this project on their website. This building was designed by famed architect 'Danforth Toan', renown for his brutalist designs.
Long Island City was originally reserved for factories and bakeries. The Long Island Expressway (LIE) has a Van Dam Street exit which runs right through this area and connects to Queens Boulevard and the 59th Street/Queensboro Bridge. That's city-bound traffic. The outbound city traffic exits the bridge via 21st Street, Queens Blvd or Thomson Avenue, which runs into Van Dam St and then several blocks down to the LIE. This building sits smack right on the corner of Thomson Avenue and Van Dam Street. Odd location for a college, though the land may have been cheaper back then.
For several years now, Long Island City had been gentrifying at a break neck speed. And whoever is responsible for changing the windows of this building knows that. It's not just a building. It's a statement. And a really good one. For it will change the dynamic of that entire neighborhood.
