Following my appt at NYU College of Dentistry, as is typically me, I wandered around the Kips Bay neighborhood of Manhattan, NYC, photographing. Many times I enjoy taking photos of trash, garbage and discarded street items. I find art in all types of stuff. And I found this specific piece amongst a pile of discarded objects. I could only see the back part, and as I turned it over with my foot, thinking it was plastic, I immediately realized how it was a heavy metal. And upon lifting it up off of the pavement I knew without a doubt that it was iron. I am a collector of iron objet d'art.
Upon researching I learned the following:
Vintage cast iron doorstops shaped like the iconic Portland Head Light in Maine are popular collector items. Often painted to match the real lighthouse, these heavy, solid-metal pieces generally measure between 5 inches and 12 inches tall. They were first cast around 1920 by various metal-ware makers.
Because they are vintage or antique, prices vary widely depending on the condition of the original paint.

The piece I found is 12 inches tall and weighs about 3-4 pounds. Thankfully I had a sturdy tote bag with me. Hence, I carried it several blocks to the subway, and all the way back to Queens and up to the humble abode. And the paint looks pretty intact. It's too nice to sell.

Portland Head Light (about/history)
Portland Head Light is a historic lighthouse in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. The light station sits on a headland at the entrance of the primary shipping channel into Portland Harbor, which is within Casco Bay in the Gulf of Maine. Completed in 1791, it was the first lighthouse built by the U.S. government and is the oldest lighthouse in Maine. The light station is automated, and the tower, beacon, and foghorn are maintained by the United States Coast Guard, while the former lighthouse keeper's house is a maritime museum within Fort Williams Park.
In 1785, leaders in historic Falmouth directed their representative to the Massachusetts General Court to secure funding for construction of a lighthouse at Portland Head.
Construction began in 1787 at the directive of George Washington and was completed on January 10, 1791, using a fund of $1,500, established by him. Whale oil lamps were originally used for illumination. In 1855, following the formation of the Lighthouse Board, a fourth-order Fresnel lens was installed; that lens was replaced by a second-order Fresnel lens, which was replaced later by an aerobeacon in 1958. That lens was replaced with a DCB-224 aerobeacon in 1991. The DCB-224 aerobeacon is still in use.

Edward Hopper painted the lighthouse in 1927. His watercolor resides at Boston's Museum of Fine Arts.

ASTORIA, QUEENS — For Ali Zaman, opening his own business was something of a far-off dream until last year, when a neighborhood landlord walked into his father's restaurant.
Ali, the 26-year-old son of the eponymous owner of Sami's Kabab House, learned that a storefront had become available on the corner of 36th Avenue and 28th Street — around the corner from his father's restaurant. The building owner wondered if the Zamans would be interested in expanding their beloved Afghan eatery.

I've been photographing this same corner since September 2021, FIVE years ago. They recently removed the sidewalk shed that had been there since forever.

This plot was to have been a 17 story hotel, though as with many sites there was either a stop work order, or the deal fell through completely.

I feel how this section of Long Island City is on the brink of blasting off on the super sonic gentrification rocket, as the LIC BID (Long Island City Business Improvement District) expanded into this area, and the building pace will increase significantly in 2026.

I've been searching for this one photo of mine and at long last have finally located it. I had taken this picture as this corner building had sat empty for so long and I knew how it was merely a matter of time.
