Old English phone box and postbox - the postbox from the reign of one of the Georges. Now that really is old. Looks like the phone box may not have been used for some time either...
Voted the world's best beach by the Sun Herald, Australia and Harper's, Boracay is the perfect island getaway, with its warm blue waters, powder-fine white sand, and a palm fringed 4-kilometer beach.
The islands facilities and amenities make her a recreational haven. Watch February's Fun-board Cup, windsurfing's annual international event, or the World Beach Volleyball Tournament in September. Or take a refreshing swim in the crystal clear waters.
The world-famous island of Boracay is located in Aklan province 345 kms. South of Manila. The island is accessible by air from Manila or Cebu through two principal gateways : Caticlan airport or Kalibo airport.
After a swim in the sea, you can engage in relaxing activities. Comb the beaches on horseback. Play an exciting game of volleyball. Get on an outrigger and sail to the other side of the island. Swim over to the floating bar and cool off with a cocktail. Or hop around one beach to another and enjoy the easy-going atmosphere.
After sunset, the island transforms into one exciting night of dancing and partying. But don't take our word for it, Boracay is an island you have to experience yourself.
For many certified sun-worshippers the world over, paradise goes by the name Boracay. For indeed, many visitors have come back to Boracay year after ytear. Some have even chosen to live in this paradise island.
Sheltered from the fierce easterly typhoons, Boracay can be found at the northwestern tip of Panay, in the western Visayas region, off the Sibuyan Sea. Boracay has managed to pack its thousand-hectare area with all the elements of a tropical paradise--crystal blue waters, powder white sand, liberal doses of tropical palms and flowering plants, and a healthy marine life underneath the seas.
Boracay is made up of three little communities: Yapak in the north, Balabag in the middle, and Manoc-manoc in the south. Hilly elevations up to 100 meters above sea level characterize Yapak and Manoc-manoc. Intertwining trails link the small villages together but may sometimes lead to lush tropical jungles. Electricity and public transportation remain relatively scarce.
Boracay would have remained a national secret if not for a few foreign travellers who accidentally stumbled upon the place. Some say it was a movie crew which spread word about Boracay to other sun-worshippers. Other swear it was German traveler Jens Peters' book, which included rare reviews about Boracay, that sent tourists on their way. Whichever tale is true, Boracay has become a melting pot for beach lovers. At any point in the island, visitors can hear English, German and French spoken fluently. More importantly, visitors respect the serene quality of the place, and pay tribute to native Boracaynons by behaving according to local behavioral codes-which means no nudity, no fighting, and no loud commotions.
Not surprisingly, the culinary fare at Boracay is as diverse as the nationalities of its visitors. French, Australian, Belgian, German, Spanish and Thai--they're all here side by side the native cuisine. Lending ample support to this virtual rainbow of fruit shakes: from sweet yellow mango, green tart mango, to pineapple, coconut milk, cantaloupe and banana. Don't go home without a sip.

Ashriat people demand for civic amenities.
CHITRAL: Ashriat is gateway of Chitral while entering in scenic valley. The valley surrounding high and rich forest from four sides there are so many fountain of milky water in mountains but 5000 population of Ashirat are totally deprived from potable drinking water. There is no facility of modern era in the whole valley. A basic Health Unit (BHU) existing there but it also running without any Doctor and only a non local midwife and medical Technician are treating of thousands of people. Although these BHU have been handed over to Peoples Primary Health Initiative Program (Formerly President Primary Health Initiative program which had launched by the then president Parvez Mushraf) but mostly of these BHU are deprived from Doctor. Qazi Sharif Ahmad a prominent social worker of the area told this scribe that although this is a gateway of Chitral and when any VIP visiting Chitral he pass through this valley and we time and again request them for uplifting
this valley but nothing have been done until now. He said that there is no Doctor (male or female) in the whole valley and in case of emergency we shift our patients to Drosh or Chitral hospital but some time our patients or injured persons expire on their way before reaching to hospital due to dilapidated condition of road. He said that this is main Peshawar Chitral road but have big ditches in its middle. As well as there is no parapet and protection wall on road side towards the river.
Its only veterinary dispensary also deprived from all basic facilities neither there is any medicine nor any other facilities for cattle of these people who mostly depend upon their cattle and farming. A large number of people are compelled to travel outside the valley to gain their livelihood because there is no job opportunity for the youth of Ashriat. After winding up machinery and other material of a foreign construction company who were working on Lawari tunnel and the work has been suspended for the last two years due to no fund and Korean company shifted their machinery to some other place and that is why a large number of our youth were jobless Qazi Sharif added. He said that although the valley have rich forest but we people were not benefited as return by taking our timber. Our women are compelled to bring drinking water in pitches from a long distance on their heads he disclosed.
There is only one government high school for boys only but nothing for girls except primary one and that is why our young girls are setting in boys high school to get their education under co-education system despite the conservative mind of people Qazi Shafiuddin Head master of Govt. High School Ashriat said that hundred of students are reading here and mostly our students comprising over girls because there is no separate school for girls. He said that there is no Science laboratory nor library for students of science classes. A student of class 10th Miss Zaibun Nisa told this scribe that she want to become a Doctor but there is no facility to continue our science education nor there is any science laboratory so how we can fulfill our dream in present situation it is not seem to become a Nurse. Besides it hundred of girls students coming to boys school from more than 15 kilometers and mostly they travelling by feet because there is no school Bus for
them. Sher Habib Jan advocate told that although we dislike to send our daughters to boys school but there is no other option except this. He said that people of the area suffering from numerous problems but unfortunately our elected representatives never visit the area to listen our problems. nrhp # 01000452- Railroad YMCA’s were once staples in the United States, offering lounges, recreational amenities, restaurants and a safe and convenient place for rest for the myriad of railroad employees. Russell, Kentucky is one such instance of a town that offered a YMCA.
Russell, located along the Ohio River west of Ashland, is best described as a sleepy river community that hugs the bottomlands between the water and the hills that surround. Not resembling much of eastern Kentucky, in terms of architectural styles or development patterns, Russell only saw growth with the expansion of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad westward into the town and again when the Russell rail yards were constructed and expanded. The city was never located near a major coalfield, nor was it located near coal processing plants unlike many cities to the south of it, although the adjoining rail yards were comprised of mostly coal cars that moved through the region, carrying a raw resource from mines to power plants and factories.
In 1880, Russell’s population was just 175, expanding to 1,758 by 1920. Consequently, the railroad YMCA, which was constructed in 1896, had a membership of 384 by 1906, with 440 workers that used the facilities each day on average. By 1919, there were 557 members – and was the third largest in the state behind only Corbin and Louisville.
The 1920s saw an expansion of the yards, and a third main track was completed between Ashland and Russell which relieved congestion. By 1924, the YMCA had a membership nearing 1,000, and was the second largest railroad YMCA in the state – behind only Louisville.
Early amenities included boarding rooms, a library and a cafeteria. An expansion in the mid-1920s added a swimming pool, playground equipment and tennis and croquet courts. Those features were added as the railroad YMCA was used more and more by the public.
By 1927, the YMCA was the largest railroad YMCA in the state, with 2,025 railroad members. But by the early 1940s, the existing space was far too small for the needs of the railroad and community, and a new railroad YMCA was completed in 1948 in the modern architectural style. The mammoth building contained new amenities, such as a bowling alley and gymnasium, meeting rooms and an updated restaurant. The railroad was also booming during this time, with the yards seeing a departure of 24 trains per day and over 1,000 car movements were occurring per day on average.
But the Russell railroad YMCA was the last constructed by the railroad, and one of the last in the United States. Steam locomotives were soon phased out for diesels, and as a result, overnight stays were no longer in demand – which reduced the need for rooms at the YMCA. Mechanization of labor also reduced the need for the YMCA. In 1984, the Chesapeake and Ohio had merged with the Louisville and Nashville and other lines that eventually became part of the Chessie System and then CSX Transportation. Soon after, CSX withdrew their support to the YMCA, and in 1992, the Russell Railroad YMCA closed.
In 2002, a redevelopment proposal called for the abandoned site to be converted into an independent living facility, although no work has begun.
