Our poster for the Threesome exhibition with thedesignkids where professionals, recent graduates and students collaborate in what could be described as a treasure hunt meet with exhibition thanks to Cat Wall and Brenton Price
This piece was a commission for a fellow Manx compatriot living in London - so truth be be told this was a fun one to do as we know just the kind of thing us humble islanders like. The idea behind this one is pretty simple as they say the Isle of Man is just 80,000 alcoholics clinging to a rock in the middle of the Irish Sea. Which is completely untrue. Only about 72,000 are alcoholics...
As you can tell we've really gone to town on this piece and done plenty of screen printing, a little embroidery and some hand work & distressing - for that 'found in an attic' aged look. We've seen fit to include Blinky the fish (from the Simpsons) as Sellafield (a nuclear reprocessing plant) is pretty much exactly opposite us on the Cumbrian coast and has always been a cause for concern for those living on the Island. We've included some mysterious map co-ordinates that should hopefully have a little meaning to the recipient along with various other elements (like the triskele and ambigram in the bottom right corner) which should hold some intrigue for him. I'm also still slightly obsessed with the distressed looking crests so am particularly proud of how they've come out.
In fact, the biggest shame about this piece is the fact that we forgot to take pictures before we sent it to the framer so most of the shots we have (obviously!) feature a lot of reflections and don't really do it any justice. Oh well, you live and learn. On the plus side though we've really enjoyed working on maps so expect more before too long...

It's been in the pipeline for a good while now but we finally managed to get our wall completed in our local boozer in Brixton, The Hand in Hand. After batting potential designs back and forth for a while we finally came up with a winner in the wall of quotes featuring Winston Churchill quotes, an ambigram, a watercolour & stencilled wallpaper background and my favourite quote of the lot 'Don't take life too seriously. No one is getting out alive...'
One of the obvious problems with working in a pub (for us at least) is the proximity to beer. We overcame this potential pitfall by starting early and having a breakfast beer to aid in the creative process. Three and a half pints later and we were all done and dusted. Then it was time to get out of there before we got in too deep and spent the entire day in there...

Because ''DREAMS ARE FANATSY''
Just a little mess around whilst bored today......
whilst i could have gone real wildstyle i was trying to keep the text readable for people who are not familier with graffiti.
For those that cant make it out.. the text reads ''DREAMS'' ..... or does it ????
This is a ambigram flip it up the other way round reads "FANATSY"
After a couple of years hiatus it was once again time for Upnorthfest. After the first one in Southport this time it was back but had gone further up north to Sunderland. After we'd loaded up the id-iomobile it was time to hit the road. A gruelling 6.5 hour drive saw us arriving around 1.30am where, thankfully, our gracious host was still up and receiving guests. (A big thanks to Pauline for putting us up and Frank for putting us in touch with her!)
The next morning we were up early and headed down to Studio Q where we'd be painting. Street work in late September is always something of a gamble so we were hugely relieved that it was blue skies and sunshine all round. We got shown to our wall but it hadn't yet been painted with red oxide, the paint of choice for this year's festival, so to start the day it was rollers at the ready with red oxide in hand. The first act of the day was managing to break the extendable roller so a quick trip to Homebase was in order. After that it was the laborious job of painting the wall with the glue-like red oxide.
Using the tower scaffold proved easier than anticipated once we'd managed to get the legs level and once the wall was dry it was time to move onto the main event - Jack Mackem the Sunderland Fitter. We'd done a little research in the hopes of coming up with a good design and it was revealed that historically the playing card the Jack of Clubs was also known as the Sunderland Fitter. Once we had this little nugget of information the design pretty much suggested itself. The 'Mackem' ambigram in the middle was the final flourish and we're left with the somewhat moody visage of Jack Mackem the Sunderland Fitter. As he's the Jack of Clubs it's probably fitting that he looks something like a bouncer. With any luck he'll be gracing the streets for a couple of years so keep your eyes open if you're up in the North East.

"INFINITE AMBIGRAM"

“INFINITE AMBIGRAM”
(Nankin ink, spray paint, graphite on paper)
“Infinite Ambigram” makes clear the meaning of the noun ambigram (ambiguous writing): its ambiguity is about the duplicity of reading and it is possible to rotate the image or reflect it in mirrors games without the word appearing inverted or losing its readability - this mechanism refers to repetitions and polysemies of contemporary poetry and it also invites to a visual game, inducing the movement.
The artist´s artwork consists on designing and making this complex graphic fitting, a process involving photographic research, sketches of movement´s representation and tests of the ambigram rotation on the three-dimensional picture plane – here, determined by the mirror figures and by the overlapping pieces of paper forming the infinity symbol.

Given that we'd already done a 'Bristol' ambigram design before Christmas I thought it only fair to get Brixton in on the action. Knowing my current proclivities if I did a load of them they'd all have stripes on them so I limited myself to just two versions for now. One with stripes, obviously, and one with a wavy patterned design. In all fairness I'd probably have to respray the blue and grey one if anyone wanted it as my favourite part, the Ace of Aces logo bit, hasn't really come out very well but I thought I'd wait and see if there was any interest first. They're A2 in size and I'd also be happy to re-do with any particular background colourways as requested if anyone felt so inclined as to ask. So there you have it.
As a side note if you're not familiar with Ram John Holder's song 'Brixton Blues' then I suggest you get yourself to Youtube pretty sharpish and give your ears a little treat.

What are you meant to do when you wake up with an earworm already running riot in your drowsy and somewhat discombobulated brain? In this instance the words 'After the rain come sun, after the sun comes rain again' were on a constant loop. It took me a good while to place the lyrics as coming from Smoke City's eventual hit 'Underwater Love' (it was released in 1994 but rose to prominence when it was used in a Levi's advert).
In an attempt to exorcise my earworm I thought perhaps turning it into an artwork would help. It did. Thankfully the earworm no longer lives with me. Perhaps I've passed the earworm to you. I can only hope...

A few hundred years ago a chump was a thick lump of wood. Nowadays we know a chump to be someone who is foolish or easily deceived. Without too much imagination you can see how one meaning has morphed over time into the other. The man in our picture is a chump. In fact he is the King Chump, Mr Mitchell T Lavin from Cincinnati, Ohio who originally sent the 'chump' ambigram used in this picture along to The Strand magazine in 1908 with the proviso:
'I think it is the only word in the English language which has this peculiarity (being an ambigram that is), and therefore hope you will consider it worthy of insertion in your 'Curiosities' column'.
What a chump. You can make an ambigram out of practically any word. I should know. I love those suckers. On another note now I've got my hands on some marbling inks nothing can stop me! Instant backgrounds!

(Nankin ink, spray paint, graphite on paper).
The artwork “Amor Cólera II” (Love Anger II) consists on the physical and semantics mutation of the word AMOR (LOVE), which when is rotated 180º, it is transformed in the word CÓLERA (ANGER). Alongside this graphic process I get through objects the foundation to compose and strengthen the iconography of this game of images and words.
The artwork is present at the individual art exhibition AMORFO (Amorphous) at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Campinas in São Paulo State, Brazil.

I have plenty of calligraphers between my friends but to whom may not know and wants to learn something more here s a brief clarification:
An AMBIGRAM is a script that can be red normally or turning it 180 degrees.( like the red petal)
A CALLIGRAM is a script that builds up an image ( the whole flower).

Psssst! Wanna see some typographic magic? Well, look no further for we've got your fill for the day. Here we have the mystical 'Hand in Hand' stencil that reads the same upside down as it does normal side up! How is this even possible? What kind of infernal trickery is this? Are we in league with the devil? Fear not, it's just ancient font magic that we picked up from our time with the creative ninjas of Ambigram that we'll be using on an upcoming commission...

When we got a call from Rosa's Thai Cafe about painting a mural at their imminently opening new branch in Brixton we jumped at the chance. Amongst other things it's nice working close to home for a change. After a couple of meetings and a bit of R&D banter with them and their architects/interior designers it was decided that a shutter wall would be constructed to give it that grimy urban look and we'd paint directly onto that. After batting round a few designs we finally had a winner - the slightly bemused looking lady with a custom designed ambigram wallpaper style background.
Given that we've done this enough times to know that the wallpaper stencil would be slightly lost on the shutters due to their curvature we decided to go belt & braces with it and laser cut some wooden cutouts of the wallpaper design so there would still be some clarity to the design if you cared to look that closely. After a busy day's painting whilst the workmen were still at work on the interior we managed to get it all completed. Given that it's the launch party this evening it looks like the install went just fine from there. Time for us to dig out some glad rags for later...

After coming up with this ambigram design (which reads the same upside down) I showed it to the other half of id-iom who was a little perplexed as to what it said. After bringing the debate to a wider audience on Facebook it would seem that I opened a tin of worms as it's apparently not at all clear what it says and I had numerous different answers as to what it might be.
I realise I could tweak the image to make it less vague and ambiguous but I decided I quite liked the idea that it wasn't entirely decipherable and was more like trying to decode graffiti tags so decided to run with it. To celebrate the various different answers I received I've come up seven different versions of the design and each one has been titled in dymo letters with one of the guesses. It's pretty plain to me what it says but then I guess perception is in the eye of the beholder so I'll leave it up to you to decide.
They're on A2 paper and made using the magic of stencils and spraypaint. The 'Ace of Aces' bit is pretty cool if I do say so myself. Drop me a line if you're interested (or confused).

“Amor Cólera #4” (Love Anger #4) is the fourth exploration of the ambigram Amor Cólera (Love Anger), now using the skin as a support. The performance consists of stamping the hands of the people with this pun, thereby it is possible to alude that stamp to what is offered and what is received. Subtitle and label the hand that hurts, dandles and even keeps the “Pollice Verso” gesture, which condemns and absolves.
